Ajax based web collaboration is at the heart of ZCS 4.5. The web client integrates email, contacts, shared calendar, VoIP, and online document authoring into a rich browser-based interface. The open source Zimlet technology enables users to include custom 'mash-ups' in the ZCS web client. ZCS 4.5 also features an Ajax-based Admin Interface plus full scripting tools to manage the ZCS server. Full support is provided for standards-based APIs (IMAP / POP / iCal / CalDAV) as well as MAPI and iSync, which enable compatibility with other clients like Microsoft Outlook, Apple desktop suite, and Mozilla Thunderbird.

Zimbra also offers Zimbra Mobile, which provides over-the-air "push" synchronization to mobile devices without the need for third party software or additional servers for most devices.

All ZCS operations and network protocols use open XML/SOAP for easy integration. Zimbra uses standard MIME format for storing messages on disk (one message/file), which means the formats are open to operating system utilities and scripts. Zimbra worked in collaboration with IBM to co-found the Open Ajax Alliance to ensure that Web 2.0/Ajax solutions like Zimbra remain viable across clients, operating systems, browsers, and languages, just as is the case for the World-wide Web.

Zimbra Desktop enables users to work when offline. Users can write email, add new appointments, and edit documents while not connected to the internet. Changes are automatically synced to the Zimbra Server when users re-connect. The Zimbra solution also features a high security package, with built-in anti-spam and anti-virus scanning, strong internet-based security (SSL/TLS for all protocols) that does not require a VPN, and supports single sign-on via business's portal.
