Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pen! Great Customer Service! I can't say enough.. I bought this pen about a month ago for my Inspiron 7000 15". I have worked with different styluses in the past but I figured I should splurge and get this "Active Pen". I use this for all of my college applied math homework and notes. I have not been disappointed. This pen has great sensitivity and practically no lag. It has changed my organizational strategies beyond measure. Not to mention the amazing Customer Service! Last week I lost both the nib and its replacement which, if you know anything about active pens, basically makes them unusable. I was messing with the nib, taking it out and putting it back in when I dropped it and lost it. But, I contacted Customer Support and spoke with the most helpful spokes-person, Tin, and within 36 hours of the conversation, I had a box in the mail with replacements!!! I can not say enough! Highly recommend this product!

I do wish that had a charging system instead of using a triple A battery, to power it, but there probably a reason they did not do that. Would recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sturdy, well designed stylus I received this stylus pen recently and I was impressed with the design of this pen. The metal body is much sturdier than other stylus lens that have cheap plastic shafts. It worked great with both my ipad as well as my Wacom tablet. My only complaint is that the pen was disassembled in the case and I had to put it together, but it’s not a huge inconvenience. All in all, the pen is sturdy and I expect it will last a while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works well, but functionality lacks for price! One would think this item could be included (and dare I ask to match interior color), especially with a 2-in-1 laptop! Instead, it took over a month after the original order to arrive, and now I think I have been double charged for it?! It would be nice to have a way to turn it off! It just "sleeps" until a button is (accidentally) pressed. At least it could have a way to recharge the battery wirelessly, or even just include a rechargeable AAAA (quadruple A) battery, since that is a rather uncommon size. Not a knock on the pen, itself, but Dell could have put an inset storage groove or at least a lanyard hasp on the XPS 13 2-in-1 for the pen. Although it seemed to install easily with downloaded driver, apparently it was also difficult to get it "officially" paired, so the firmware could be updated. Otherwise, it runs well with the Dell pen app configured and running to adjust the exact pointer location for left or right handedness angles. The 3 buttons are mostly universally configurable, except some options reserved only for the top button. Apparently it does not work to turn the pen upside-down to switch to eraser mode, so the top button needs to be set to eraser for drawing, which prevents it from being set to its specially reserved options. All in all, this seems like a nice item for an included bundle with a tablet or 2-in-1, but not a great bargain for the high standalone price.

Bought this pen because it's literally the only active pen compatible with my screen (yay for them not telling you things when you buy your laptop), and I really wish it wasn't. The location of the eraser button makes it so that when you're trying to take notes you constantly end up erasing what you've just written. You also switch types of compatibility with the same button, so if you're not paying attention you can accidentally switch modes and are unable to write until you get it switched back. You would think for the price they would have put a bit more thought into the layout of the pen (for example, using the button on the back end for switching compatibility modes). Was also disappointed to find out that you can't buy replacement pen nibs, so if you loose them or wear them out you have to buy a whole new pen. Keeping it because I really need to be able to take notes with drawings on my laptop, and it's the only pen that will work for me.

Only downside is the requirement for a AAAA battery, but I would wager that it has excellent battery life. Otherwise, the execution is done well with this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must-have for latitude users Overall, the Dell premium active pen is one above the rest. Excellent build quality. Although the pin is on the pricey side. If you have a premium latitude laptop or any Dell laptop to pair this with, it comes in handy. Also running the Dell application for the pen comes in handy as well. Although I can't read the battery life on it, I've had it for a couple weeks and everything so far seems well. And using the application again will give you the battery status and indication of what your use is like. It is running Bluetooth therefore it's always connected and is in use. And with the low pairing your battery should be fine over time. The responsiveness on screen is excellent. And running the application can tell how hard you're pressing to how light you're using it. I believe this pen would be suitable for any right or left-handed individual. The buttons are very well placed. What makes it very comfortable and easy to use. I do recommend it. I am currently using a Dell latitude 9420 and find this pen to come quite in handy. Because I do not want a lot of fingerprints on my screen.lol

My previous one lasted four years of continuous, moderate use before the front end of the pen kept disconnecting from the body of the pen, messing up the sensitivity and rendering it a hassle to keep using. Occasionally the new pen does not register button clicks, but clicking harder solves the issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replaced my broken nib with Bamboo Ink Nib Replacement Kit I've enjoyed this stylus and it has worked well for me. I'm not what you would call a digital artist so I can speak so much about comparing it with other Windows Ink pens. I can tell you what happened when my nib broke. When my both my tips broke off I logged onto dell.com to get some replacement nibs. I was so disappointed to find there were no replacements to be found... anywhere. So I bought a Bamboo Ink, which is a great stylus that comes with a nib replacement kit...which is also sold separately. The nibs look so similar I decided to try them in my Dell PN579X....success! I'm so happy to find out that the Bamboo Ink nib replacement kit works with my Dell PN579X pen! If I encounter any problems I'll update my review, but I'm glad to use my Dell Premium Active Pen again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Broken nib made pen unusable I bought the dell premium active pen 1.5 months ago to use with my brand new XPS 2-in-1. When I went to use the pen yesterday I found the nib was broken in half, with part of the nib lodged in the pen and not retrievable or replacable. (No idea where the rest of the nib is or what caused it to break.) The irony is the pen came with two nibs and a tweezer to switch them out, but I haven't been able to remove the stuck/broken part. I am disappointed on several levels: 1) the nib broke after 6 weeks of normal use 2) from my perspective this is a manufacturing defect 3) because of the way the nib broke, it effectively made the pen useless 4) This is not covered by warranty, so my options are to replace or repair the pen by paying out of pocket. I'm going to try to MacGyver a repair. And if I can't, I might even buy another active pen because, for the most part, it fulfilled the role I bought it for. But given how quickly the pen became unusable and that the issue is not covered by warranty, I could not be more disappointed with my purchase.

It’s convenient and stays attached to my dell since it’s magnetic. Simple button to connect Bluetooth. It’s very responsive and battery life is good. The accuracy is impressive and it’s ideal for me to use during meetings. I can quickly jot down notes.

I haven't used the alternatives, but since I have a Dell system, I'm quite alright with that. I'd recommend this product.

I sell insurance and making this makes my presentation so much easier and more efficient to outline coverage - speed through the modules to avoid using the pad or a mouse - and capturing legible signatures. Very pricey compared to the rest of your options but the compatability is unmatched for Dell.

I write a lot and find myself more creative & flowing when I write instead of type, this has been so helpful. My daughter also uses it to draw, she loves it. I don't know how I managed without it.

I had to buy another one because the carrying sleeve I bought does a poor job of fitting the laptop and the charger, and the little bit of extra pressure in the carrier bent the old pen in its pocket. It's now almost unusable due to the calibration of the pen once the cone/tip had been bent. Besides the price point mixing with its delicacy, the pen works great and is a joy to use out of the box, just take extra care when storing it or travelling with it. 5 star product but that's cut in half since I had to buy two, because the protective gear recommended and sold by Dell still failed to keep it safe.

It works great for taking notes during class and annotating slides and documents. The sensitivity of the tip is also very useful for drawing and creating other kinds of art on the xps13

It would be nice if it worked with a wider variety of applications, but is a nice addition to my 2 in 1 laptop.

It makes drawing and web designing so much simpler that I can't even imagine not using this pen anymore! It was super easy to install and use. Rated 5 out of 5 by from PEN DOES NOT WORK WITH XPX LAPTOPS When you go on the Dell website, it recommends this pen with XPS touchscreen laptops, but it only works with the 2 in 1s. It does not work with a regular XPS laptop despite the Site’s recommendation. When I was troubleshooting my pen that I, I found threads dating back years on this topic with hundreds of annoyed consumers, but I guess it is not important to them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from IF PROBLEMS - PLEASE READ!!! Fantastic Pen - Inspiron 15 7000 (7573) I just ordered this pen for my Inspiron 15 7000 (7573) (2017 model). So I was on the phone with tech support trying to figure this pen out for 2 hours. There are a couple of things you need to realize. It all depends on which version of operating software your Dell can handle when it comes to recognizing the active pens. There are 2 versions . MPP or AES. Your PN579X pen can handle BOTH types. However, your laptop might not. My laptop is an MPP, and my pen was unknowingly on the AES setting, so that's why it wouldn't work. There's a chart here to show you which one your device might be: https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln309408/dell-active-pen-pn579x-support-center?lang=en First you have to sync your pen up via bluetooth to the pc. I did that successfully and still couldn't use the pen. The top button did work successfully (could open up Ink Workspace etc.). However, when i would try to write, the laptop wouldn't recognize it. You need to hold both of the buttons at the bottom (the up and down buttons). Hold them down for 2-3 seconds then let go. Move your pen to the screen. If you get a little dot cursor following your pen's tip, then it worked. If not, hold the 2 buttons down again. This alternates you between the 2 modes. You might just be on the wrong mode and not know it. Keep trying to put your pen tip up to the screen between each attempted alternation. One more thing. You DO NOT need to download the active pen control panel. After speaking with Dell on the phone, I learned that the MPP compatible laptops can't download the panel, only AES compatible ones can. I was unable to download it all along and kept getting an error message saying "A supported tablet was not found on the system." I initially thought that was why the pen wouldn't work, but it really doesn't matter at all. Just stick to the default settings in the user guide if you have a computer using MPP. All of a sudden, it no longer writes on the screen. I've tried replacing the battery, updating drivers, repairing, changing modes (AES/MPP), etc., and can do nothing to make the pen write anymore.

The main issue I have is that using the button on the side of the barrel as a right click works oddly. If you hover and click it, it works fine as a normal right click. If you hover, right click and hold, it registers as a left click and hold. It makes the pen much less viable for zbrush navigation. I can't say I'd recommend it if you're planning on using it for Zbrush. Also, this thing is expensive.

The students love them and we haven't found issues with the quality of the pen at all during normal usage. However we have noticed two issues with the styli that will hopefully never affect you. The first is that there are non-technical components that can break that essentially invalidate the whole pen. The tip (metal cone) at the front of the pen can sometimes break and you can't buy replacements for it. You have to buy a whole new pen. Our observed failure rate is around 1-2%. Keep in mind that these are high school students. Second, the serial number for the pen is on a piece of paper attached to the back of the pen. You see it when you open the back to access the battery. Some students ripped off that paper and now it's very difficult to identify the owner of the pen when they get lost (again, high school kids). The serial number isn't accessible through device manager but it really should be. The only way to find the owner is to have them bring their laptop in and click a button on the pen and hope that it activates software on the laptop since it's paired via bluetooth. Very cumbersome and easily avoidable.

I did not always have the highest opinion, however using them for work over the last few years has really turned my thoughts around. I have had 2 versions of the pen now and both have been great. the pen allows for added functionality and keeps me from getting fingerprints on my screen constantly, which is a win all by itself. The pen feel good in the hand, is responsive and easy to use and get accustomed to. this one takes a AAAA battery, which could be the better option, if you are a heavy user, you don't need to wait for a recharge or plug it in awkwardly, just swap the battery and go. downfall to that would be not having a spare battery handy. Overall, Dell products have been impressive, I don't feel that I am using an inferior product, and even choose to use my Dell over some of my “Fruit” products to get things done.

Price is good (got on sale). The balance is good. It only comes with two nibs. Buttons work well. I'm a longtime Surface Pro user and wanted inking capabilities at work. My evil IT department initially deployed my 5530 with a non-touch HD screen despite me asking for the 4K touch enabled screen. I fixed that problem by ordering a 4K touch screen and upon installation, noticed pen was now listed under system. A quick bing search revealed the PN579X working with XPS 15 laptops. Since the 5530 is very similar to the XPS 15, I gave the PN579X a try and I now have a working pen on my Precision 5530.

Replacing them either - super expensive - Impossible since dell IS NOT PROVIDING nibs worldwide despite selling such pen. I spent several hours with: dell assistance, local dell reseller, professional dell support, etc etc NO ONE was able to provide on regular channel the nibs. Worst, they propose to buy a NEW PEN! (Which is insulting for two reasons: 1) It is a stupid stupid thing to do. spending 60 euro or more instead of few cent for bit of overpriced plastic) 2) The issue will appear again in future. I had awareness that another company has some nibs compatible, the W**** - ACK42416 . Well They gave a better support, but of course can not guarantee the full compatibility. Besides they DO NOT SELL any of their pen which use such nibs in a country where said nibs are not available.

It is manufactured for Dell by Wacom and works with Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP or Wacom AES 1.0 or 2.0. It has a smooth matte finish that is easy to grip and feels good in your hand for detailed drawings. There is a programmable side button for easy erasing or other needs. It has a very powerful magnet to attach it to the side of your laptop which is a really nice feature for an expensive easy to lose object. It also has palm rejection so you can rest your hand on the screen without interference. I found the latency to be acceptable with a lag showing only when I made repeated small markings rapidly. It has 4096 pressure levels so can be quite detailed. It also has tilt support which I didn't find to be too useful on a laptop but maybe others feel differently about that.

I bought an inspiron 14, and couldn't find the model until later and mine does not support tilt function, so I could have bought the cheaper one. ANd it was suggested on the page after I bought the laptop, so it wasn't that I was being stubborn about getting this particular model. The magnetic holder is good, but it gets in the way sometimes, so when I go to pick the pen up, it will open an app. It's also not strong enough to hold the pen, unless the laptop has a dedicated recess for it.

Always could have been optimized/integrated just a little bit better, for example when using the handwriting keyboard option it would often glitch and mess up what I was writing. But for drawing and such with the right programs it worked beautifully. Pressure sensitivity is awesome. I was so, so excited about this product when I got it! Probably deserves 4/5 stars overall because of the bugginess, except that my beloved pen broke the other day. Top barrel button can't be pressed down anymore and therefore can't click. Can't find any support for the pen through Dell anywhere. Extremely disappointed customer considering the expense.

Support then led me through updating the video driver indicating that should help. It didn’t. Now My laptop touchscreen won’t respond to pressure from a finger or simple stylus as it did before. The pen was very easy to connect but you do have to download the driver app for it also. It tells you what website to go to. The instructions manual was pretty easy to understand. The pen isn't to heavy at all. Feels like your holding a regular pen. Good product from dell.

I had to do extensive research (not easy finding the correct answer) to find the Dell pen that syncs with my Dell laptop. Do your research before purchasing, but now that we have the correct pen, we are very happy w/ the pen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from fragile tip i bought this pen and at first it was amazing but then my first tip broke and the nub is still inside the pen with no way of getting it out or dismantling the tip that holds it. i was on the phone for about an hour updating stuff and finally when the tip broke i was told that the only option was to buy a new one for about $100. id advise if you buy this pen, treat it as you would a new born baby because you don't get a second chance with it. dell really should have a metal tip so you don't break it if you accidentally drop it on the carpeted floor.

Easy to use and set up with strong magnets to hold to the side of the laptop. I'm using it with an Dell Latitude 5300 2-in-1. The buttons are well placed and work well. Only complaint is the side buttons have the same feeling as the pen body and sometimes you don't realize your finger is on it and press it. The pen would feel better if the buttons had a slight texture to them.

I use a Dell Active Pen with my work laptop and rely on it heavily for taking notes (old-school style :-), brainstorming ideas, and whiteboarding. Loving the Active Pen with the XPS 2-in-1 for brainstorming on home improvement projects and sketching out ideas. Magnetic attachment to laptop is nice feature.

It doesn't have the tilt function compatibility as far as I know but that doesn't bother me. All in all it does it was supposed to do and that's to draw on my various programs with ease.

It is precise and has a nice magnetized feature that allows it to adhere to the laptop so it won't be misplaced. There are no marks from your hand when you right - it only picks up the writing.

I left the settings as they came on my Dell Inspiron 5579, with "Support Active Pen" engraved on the laptop surface. If I could change the pen, I would make an on and off switch for it like a flashlight.

Also windows 10 is missing free movie-maker software that was provided in Dell's older Windows 10 software, system message stated that Photo edit software handled movies but it did NOT work for me to edit a movie. And THIS VERSION of windows 10 is loaded with pop-up "ads" & it reset the use of a desired "open" software app to the Microsoft version app that it $ells.

After about two weeks the sensor began to lag and didnt really notice the pen was hovering on the surface near the screen (as represented by the presence of a cursor displayed on the screen). I had to wave it a bit for it to register. Still works with a bit of annoyance, but other options are as of yet similarly inferior to surface pen and apple pencil like performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Accidental Side Key Pressing for Unconventional Pen Holders The touch sensitivity, speed, and pairing with my XPS 13 2-in-1 is great, but I, like many people, don't hold my pen the "right" way, and this means that I am constantly pressing the side keys with the inside of my thumb or index finger by accident. This results in many frustrating mistakes in drawing or browsing. If there is a way to disable the side keys entirely, I am not aware of it. I also don't think that the accidental touch blocking, that is supposed to prevent your palm from being recognized by the touch screen while using the pen, is particularly effective. I always have to pull my sleeve down over my hand while drawing to avoid lots of unwanted palm-drawing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If nib breaks off - impossible to replace For more that a year I've enjoyed this pen with my XPS-13 and Evernote. However, today, I pulled out my pen and, to my dismay, discovered that somehow I had managed to break the nib off below the surface of the pen tip with no external surface to use for extraction. Attempts to unscrew the tip were futile. I was able to finally pull the tip loose using a small pair of vice grips but the outside surface of the pen tip is now gouged. Accessing the the broken nib forced me to stretch the internal coil. After reassembling the pen and replacing the nib, the pen DOES write - but it is now hyper-sensitive to the screen surface. Transition from one letter to the next now always leaves a "bridge" between the strokes. Not happy about needing to buy a whole new pen.

Tge refresh rate of the xps is not high enough so whatever you write is like 0.5s slower than the tip of the pen. Straight lines are impossible to write, and it is hard to write words clearly (Especially hard for more complicated words like Chinese or Koreans). Might only be good for light drawing purpose, but absolutely not for note taking. It is still miles away from Apple Pencil but charge you the price.

Helps keep my screen fingerprint free. I like the magnet feature so it stays close to my laptop. Added bonus of the top button customization to launch apps for quick note taking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great features Active pen from Dell works well. Very responsive to handwriting. I also use this pen for drawing and have found that accuracy is impressive. I appreciate that the pen attaches to the side of my lap top. I know where it is at all times when I’m not using it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good pen, short battery life. I enjoyed the way the pen wrote and felt, and I rarely experienced blackouts. However, the battery life of this pen is extremely short, and it only took a 3 days for the battery to run out. It's very hard to find rechargeable AAAA batteries, so the rechargeable pen might have been a better option cost wise. I was testing it out for the school year because as a student I write a lot and it was not very good for that. Perhaps if you're a person who writes less frequently it may be a better option for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dell Premium active pen PN579X I ordered dell premium active pen PN579X, the package arrived on time, surprisingly it’s not the product that i ordered, instead of a pen it was a keyboard and a mouse, so i did have to call and requested for a return cause what came wasn’t my order and someone for sure is waiting for that keyboard and mouse, the return was successful it reached the destination that i was instructed to send with proper labeling and all, however i was told that my refund might take 10-14 days, so until now i am patiently waiting for my refund if i will really receive it who knows! Dell has a good costumer support in my experience for this particular transaction but I can’t rate a product that hasn’t reach me at all. Hope this company can deliver what exactly costumers ordered.
