It installs w/o any set-up/ activation issues; and is a reliable, top quality, 'plug n play' product. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Horrible. My HP1606dn doesn't even use it 1. Bought an aftermarket toner, which failed HP protection. Failed 2. Bought a toner from a 2nd vendor. Also failed HP toner protection. Fail 3. Bought from a 3rd aftermarket vendor. HP toner protection wouldn't use that one either. 4. Caved in. Paid 87.00 for a genuine HP toner cartridge from HP. Printer won't even use the toner cartridge. Now in the process of removing printer, drivers, printer devices and software from all computers in the household. Just to try to re-install all over again, and get my formerly dependable, now useless HP1606dn to function again. HP has been a nightmare. They used to be an industry leader. Sad.

The amazing thing is that there are always coupons available for the HP store (just google HP coupon) that really work! Toner came quickly (3 days) and free on standard shipping, too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HP you disappoint me HP1536mfp is an excellant product but to only need the 78A toner is ridiculous. I wish the other reviews was available before I purchased in April, 2011. I have paid for my printer twice in toner. HP needs to go back to the drawing board and come up with a BETTER product or at least a product that produces what is says and exceeds like more toners do. I am lucky if I get 1500 copies. I just buy two at a time, so there is a small savings.

The sad fact is that all inks and toners are way over priced and an industry-wide rip-off. The discount coupon from HP was a nice change, and the free overnight shipping arrived, as promised. This cartridge will not print 2000 pages--closer to 1200-1400, and thus, 5¢ per print.

While we can by cheaper non HP brands, the original OEM HP CE278A lasts at least 2 years for me and provides very consistent quality. Therefore I always buy the HP brand cartridge for both my Laser Jet and Office Jet printers.

I have used other HP cartridges and have been very pleased with both the quantity and quality of the printing. The quality is great - but it sure lacks in quantity - thought I had a low volume cartridge rather than a regular one. Come on, HP - why are you skimping on the quantity of print pages on this cartridge!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pass on 78A and LaserJet P1606dn The laserjet printer looks great, but the downfall is it's toner. It doesn't live up to it's 2100 capacity prints. I'm lucky to get 1500-1600 prints from the toner before it poops out on me. At $80 per toner cartridge, that means I'm paying a nickel for every print (and that's on the high side). There is no generic toner or high capacity toner available for the HP LaserJet P1606dn. The printer works great, but the toner is it's biggest downfall and I would not suggest paying $160.00 for a printer where the toner is half as expensive than the unit. This printer will have to be replaced and I will save money replacing it. For the next printer, I will be the reveiwing toner reviews for toner life, quality and price before deciding on a printer.

I have low print volumes and order a replacement as soon as I put in my standby cartridge. In other words I always have a replacement cartridge by my printer so there is no time I’m without toner. Ordering was easy from the HP site and delivery wast fast.

Be cautious of the toner cost if you need to print many pages. This is not cheap - $87.99 toner / 1249 pages = $ 0.07 / page

When I set the re notification to remind me in 1 week it reminds me every time I print. Also there doesn't seem to be a way of informing the software that I have already purchased the new toner cart. Until the print jobs start to come out lighter I'm stuck with the notification dialog box appearing every time I print. All 3 of my Printers, Monitor and Computer are HP products. Is there a way to turn this option off and turn it back on when the toner cart. is replaced?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A major disappointment My old LaserJet 1220 used either 15A or 15X cartridges and was a dream to use in my tax prep and accounting business. The 15A cartridges (cost $70-75) were good for at least 2500-3000 pages and the 15X ($90 cost) for 500-750 more. Even during busy season, I only needed to replace the cartridge every 5-6 weeks, & even less often the rest of the year. When the old printer finally gave out after over 6 years of workhorse service, I didn't hesitate to look for another LaserJet as a replacement. My choice was a 1536dnf. While the printer itself works well enough, its 78A toner cartridge ($75-80 cost) is awful, to say the least. Even with the print density turned way down, I still only get about 1500-1600 pages & have had to replace FIVE cartridges in less than the 4 months I've had the new printer. I've gone online & seen my complaint about this lemon of a cartridge repeated many times by other unsatisfied customers.. HP needs to remedy this problem soon for its own sake. As for me, I cannot recommend any printer that uses the 78A cartridge and am looking for a new printer to replace this toner (and money) guzzler.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from correct print settings used 12A for many years on 3020 and got good cartidge life. purchased new M1530 MFP using this cartidge...went thru and changed print settings to 600 dpi. Left at default 1200 dpi, cartridge would go quicklly.. but with old 12A in 3020 setting was 600 dpi for satisfactory printing for business use. all those that decry the low volume from this cartidge need to go and change print settings...that is almost as easy and loading this cartridege in the printer

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not as good as previous toner While this toner cartridge delivers the stated number of copies, and even sometimes more, I have found that the ink does not stay on certain kinds of papers. It will not stay on standard paper envelopes or on certain types of labels. I've had several HP laserjet printers and never had this issue with the toner until I purchased a printer that uses this toner. If I want to print addresses on envelopes, I have to use a different printer or hand write them. Not good. On several envelopes that I printed using this toner, the ink "fell" or was "wiped" off before I could even put them in the mail. I complained to HP but never heard back. Hopefully they will rectify this problem in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrible per-page cost I can't believe that HP is charging just as much for a cartridge rated at 2,000 pages as it has for cartridges for other printers rated at 5,000 or more pages. It's outrageous. Previously, I owned a LaserJet 1200 and before than a LaserJet 4. I always bought either the standard or extended-life cartridges. Even the so-called "economy" cartridges were rated at 3,000 pages. Had I known that this 2,000-page turkey was the only cartridge available for the P1606dn, I never would have purchased the printer. Anyone want to buy a slightly-used P1606dn?

We got approx. 500 sheets printed with the cartridge before it ran out of ink. The next time I buy a printer, I'll make sure I research how good it's printer cartridge is. I'm extremely disappointed in this product.

Looks like my all-in-one will be an all-in-everything-EXCEPT-printer. I will have to purchase a new printer that is a workhorse and doesn't cost an arm and a leg for supplies (preferably from a different company).

I think the total number of pages has been misrepresented. No wonder the printer was inexpensive. HP is making its profit many times over on the cartrige.

The specs for the cartridge say it should be able to print off double that amount. I just ordered my second cartridge and if I end up getting the same results, I'll be using this printer as a scanner.

Put the cartridge in my printer and it wouldn't give a good print copy; it acted like cartridge was empty. I will purchase from Staples from now on. No more online ordering.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from speak english there is nothing intuitive about this. check the chip for damage. where is the chip? there is a tab that needs to be pulled out. how far to pull? will it pop out completely? should i cut it ? no way to know. awful! there are no written instructions anywhere. the visual symbols are dark and indecipherable.

In fast I'm lucky if I got 1,200-1,500 pages. The toner is expensive and should at least perform as HP states it will.

That's ridiculous for a almost 80 bucks single color cartridge.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Genuine HP so much better than the imitation So the last time we needed a laser cartridge (2017) my husband thought the hp version was too expensive so he purchased 2 knockoffs (my fault, I hate running out of stuff, I like to have one on the shelf so I'm not caught in a bind). The printer knew immediately it wasn't genuine. The first one printed fine, but didn't last as long. The printer complained for more than like a year before it actually needed to be replaced. I think we got half the prints that we normally would. Put the 2nd one in. Again the printer let us know it wasn't the real deal. The prints were fine for 6 maybe 9 months, but the printer started complaining about low toner at like 4 months. We kept printing on it for like a year longer. Eventually the prints just kept getting darker, like the entire sheet was clouded over. The print was still legible, but no good for anything like a resume. I wasn't sure if it was the printer (it's more than 10 years old) or the cartridge, so I only bought 1 cartridge. Installed it and I knew it was the crappy knock off. I'm going to order another back up cartridge from HP. No more poor "bargain" cartridges for us.
