McAfee VirusScan command line scanners deliver the advanced anti-virus scanning technology of McAfee VirusScan in a UNIX- or Windows -based utility. They provide proactive, comprehensive threat detection and cleaning with the granular control that only a command line scanner provides.

The renowned McAfee anti-virus scan engine stops all types of viruses and malicious code threats, including "traditional" viruses, email worms, Internet worms, DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks, backdoor and remote access Trojans, and zombies.

Using technology that drills down into compressed data, VirusScan is also able to find hidden threats buried in .zip and other compressed file types.

Some situations simply require the degree of control available only with a command line utility. Maybe you need to use a command line scanner alongside a third-party content filter at the Internet gateway, or perhaps you want to integrate a command line scanner into your own custom business application or process. McAfee VirusScan answers this need with comprehensive anti-virus protection that runs on Windows/DOS or a variety of UNIX platforms.

VirusScan has enhanced scanning functionality to include on-demand and scheduled in-memory scanning for viruses, worms, and Trojans. This protects your systems from threats such as CodeRed and SQLSlammer, which don't write their code to disk, by removing the process from memory.

The advanced heuristic analysis used by VirusScan looks through the code in a file, determining if the actions it takes are typical of a virus. The more "virus-like" code found, the more likely it is to be infected. To reduce the risk of false alarms, this "positive" heuristics approach is combined with "negative" heuristics, which searches for those things that are distinctly non-virus-like.

In addition, VirusScan employs generic detection, which involves using a single virus definition to detect and clean many variants of the same virus family. This is especially useful today, when a "successful" threat is often followed by a host of variants.

Independent laboratory testing consistently awards McAfee VirusScan top marks for avoiding false alarms, which cost money and undermine confidence in a company's anti-virus defenses. Every week, McAfee virus definition (DAT) files undergo rigorous QA testing on a test server containing more than one-and-a-half terabytes of real-world applications, resulting in the most up-to-date, accurate detection possible.
