The appliances can be installed in transparent bridge or routing modes, offering easier installation. Transparent scanning allows the appliances to protect internal web servers and ensures that there are minimal changes needed in the configuration of your network. Alternatively, the appliances are able to run in proxy mode for scanning. The WebShield appliances have been architected and tuned for performance and reliability. In-built load sharing technology in the WebShield appliance range allows the use of multiple appliances if greater performance is needed. In addition, combined with the bridging mode of operation, the inbuilt load-sharing technology allows the appliances to be configured for high availability, to create a failover solution.
The WebShield appliances offer comprehensive Content Filtering. They can scan e-mail for words and phrases within the subject line and body text of e-mail messages to prevent offensive e-mail entering the organization. In addition, they are able to scan file attachment names, sizes or types, which can help save network bandwidth (e.g. by blocking .MPG files) or prevent potentially dangerous files (e.g. .VBS) from entering the organization. Through integration with McAfee's ePolicy Orchestrator, the WebShield appliances provide graphical reporting on key virus activity at the gateway. Detailed reports are also available on content filtering rules that have been triggered and attempts to access prohibited URLs. In addition, full virus trend analysis and reporting is available, ensuring the administrator always has a birds-eye view of infections. The WebShield e-appliances use McAfee's award winning scanning and cleaning engine, which is proven effective time after time as it is continually awarded 100% in independent detection and cleaning tests.
The WebShield e1000 offers approximately twice the performance of an e500, and the ability to support a greater number of concurrent users. In addition, the e1000 also supports copper gigabit network infrastructures.
