I have two HDMI cables coming in from my external monitors along with the connection from my laptop. Super easy to set up! Disappointed but works fine - would advice you look at the WD19 as this one is USB3 not USB-C, missed that when it was recommended for the Inspiron 5510. So it works great functionally no issues with multiple displays but can't charge your laptop so you have to also plug in power to your laptop which defeats the purpose of a dock in my book. Also means you need to buy another power supply unless you want to unplug your dock to take power with you and then it costs almost as much as the USB-C dock (WD19) which does provide power and gives you the one cable docking station. Only other issues is that I did notice that a logitech keyboard and mouse were a bit laggy when the receiver was plugged into the dock, moving the receiver to the laptop fixed it, but also not an issues I have had with the WD19 docks that we normally use.

Connected to the hub is a Dell 27" Display, a wired USB Microsoft Keyboard, wireless USB Mouse, and wired USB Logitech Camera. The hub provides power and connectivity through either USB port on the device, however I prefer the one one the right. I emphasize that the Display works through the hub and the separate power supply is eliminated with this setup.

Coverts the 14" laptop screen to a 24" monitor and uses a regular keyboard. I use Dell monitors, desktops, laptops, and printer. Rarely do I have issues and when I do they resolve them quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Changing from a desktop setup to a laptop I purchased a DELL laptop to replace a desktop computer setup. The Dell D3100 docking station allowed me to free up ports on the laptop but also expanded my external connections. I have connected an external monitor, external speakers and a wireless keyboard and mouse. I also attached an external 1TB hard drive, which I had removed from my old desktop. I now have the power cord and the cable from the laptop to the docking station connected to the laptop. Everything else comes off the docking station. When I want to take the laptop with me, I simply have to unplug the two cords from the laptop. Once everything was connected, I went to DELL Support where I was able to search for drivers with one click of the mouse and a second click to install them.

There were little instructions included in the package, but there were instructions to install some related software from Dell support site prior to using the device. Software installed seamlessly. Connection cable to laptop USB was included with package; you have to look for it because it's small. I thought the connection was a Firewire cable, but it is called a USB A cable. I think those term are inter changeable, but it is the same type of connection you would normally use to connect a printer. A video on YouTube explained the setup and was easy to follow. After connecting the docking station to the laptop, I plugged in the dual monitors, external DVD/CD, keyboard, and mouse; each peripheral engaged after a few seconds delay. The docking station is working great and has allowed me to connect dual monitors, which is crucial to my remote bookkeeping for several clients. From what I can tell, this Dell docking station is universal and can be used to extended the capabilities of any laptop. I highly recommend getting this docking station.

I was hoping it would charge my laptop while connected like my old docking station but it will not so I have to plug in this docking station and also plug in my laptop. Another problem with this is the usb connections will disconnect randomly. I have my mouse connected and half way thru working, the mouse will stop working but the mouse power light is still on. I have to disconnect the usb connection and reconnect roughly 5 times per hour to keep using it. This also goes with usb drives that I connect to this too. It will lose connection and I will have to remove the usb drive and reconnect to keep using it. Very disappointed with this.

I’ve never used a docking station that did not power my device, so I assumed this docking station provided power - nope. I don’t remember seeing this information in the device info/specs though it may have been there. Was a big disappointment in that way.

There was no mention of a power incompatibility between the two and I expected the D3100 to be able to power the notebook without the need for a separate power adapter connected to the notebook. After I received and connected, I found out this was not possible since D3100 relies on USB3 to power the notebook (which Inspiron15 does not support). I expected better from Dell. This could have been mentioned during the purchase process and I would have purchased a compatible docking station since I now a docking station that does not work properly.

I only use one external display at the moment, so I can't speak to its ability to handle two or three displays. I move my laptop a lot, and when I bring it back to my main work area I always had about five things to connect, hence the interest in having a docking station. That's especially true for my hardwired gig-ethernet connection, since the RJ-45 jacks on these slim laptops are so flimsy. My only disappointment--and the reason for only four stars--is that the upload speed is throttled back from ~900 Mbps to only about 250-300. Tech Support wasn't able to tell me whether that's common in these units. They only told me I could call Customer Support for a refund or replacement, but they were out of stock and months away. So I'm living with it for now.

The only drawback I have with this docking station is the is the connecting cable to the laptop is only about 2 feet long. So it really assume you want this right next to your machine. I could have use a longer cable to tuck this out of the way. It gets a bit messy with the number of cables I have connected. It took some tinkering to get the laptop to see 3 additional monitors, but it does work. Also, I'm not sure how to get the head phone jack to work. I'm sure it's user error. Other than the cable length is seems to be working great, supports 3 additional monitors and I would recommend it of you have the need.

It does not provide power for your computer. Your computer will need to be plugged in separately. 2nd, you will need to download a driver before using it. Apart from that this docking station has worked flawlessly and I have been happy with it.

I found similar reports which provided complex fixes, but I expect modern Dell hardware to work when Dell says compartability exists. Returned in less than 24 hours.

I decided to go straight to the Dell store, saw this unit and purchased it. The communication from order through shipping to delivery was fantastic. I opened the Box, read a few quick directions taking me to a quick link for some drivers and the unit has performed flawlessly. As we know not all things tech are top shelf but this experience was top shelf all the way. No calls needed, no issues at all, and I am up and running with three screens. If I need another 'Widget' from Dell this online store is where I am going. ( I currently run an Inspiron 15 3000 series laptop)

The reason it did not get a full 5 stars was it does not charge the attached laptop. So I still have to have the battery charger on my desk to keep the battery charged. So if I take my laptop with me, I also have to unplug the battery charger, which is cumbersome.

I guess that made me think they all do, so I bought this one thinking that is would provide power, however it does not. After hooking it up I realized it and read the product description again which clearly does not include power as a point in its abilities. It is not a full docking solution. The USB 3.2 connector does not provide power to the laptop. The latter needs it's own power cable. A docking station using a thunderbolt cable would be a better option. The system I purchased does not have a thunderbolt port.

First, my XPS 13 only has USB-C (2) with no standard USB which makes sense with the sleek design. What doesn't make sense is that the Displaylink cable to the laptop is USB and requires and adaptor to a USB-C that is smaller and feels like an after thought. Second, I have issues with my Samsung C27HG7x being detected. Finally, the Displaylink really is a clunky black box. I'm happy to return it if there's a smarter option that works smoothly.

The Laptop only has USB-C ports, and the Dock has no USB-C ports so an adapter needs to be used to connect the laptop to the dock. It works, but it's messy. Probably should have not been an available option on the laptop configuration page....

By the time I had everything set up and ready to go, I realized that this box does support dual monitors, speced at 60Hz refresh MAX. It does not have the capability to support dual monitors at 60Hz refresh. There is very notable delay when dragging windows from screen to screen. I would HIGHLY suggest looking elsewhere if that is your minimum standard.

The keyboard does not work properly when plugged into the docking station either. The typing will pause intermittently and characters will repeat randomly.

I have a number of USB-connected peripherals plus 2 external monitors. I’d maxed out the USB dongle I purchased with my Dell laptop back in 2021, and this really helps. I wish the USB 3 cable that came with it were longer than 2 feet, but it beats the 1-inch (!) cable length on my dongle. I now can easily manage my peripherals and set them up farther away from my work area. I’m using the giga ethernet interface, 2 HDMI ports and several of the USB interfaces - external HDD, audio interface and a few other things, with room for more. Setup was pretty easy. Documentation was pretty slim, but the main message was to download drivers BEFORE hooking things up, and that probably helped the setup. And, when I need to detach everything and actually use my laptop on my lap, I only have 1 cable to remove.

It doesn't charge your laptop when plugged in but it was cheaper to just get a second charger and leave one with this dock than it was to get a dock that charged. My biggest complaint is that it has two HDMI ports and only one DisplayPort and I wish it had two DP instead.

I was adding an additional monitor of which I had purchased and wasn't sure about the dock requirements. The sales rep advised me to buy this which is a USB 3.0 my monitors and laptop are Type C. Reached out to tech support as I was trying to use an adapter when I realized what happened. It took bouncing to 3 different technicians before someone was able to give me accurate information.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why no power connection? The whole point of a docking station is for consolidation and distribution of interface connections for the laptop. Whether those connections are for video, usb's, printers, or power shouldn't matter. It makes no sense that this docking station requires a separate power connection to the laptop. The unit works as designed, but I'm giving it only 3 stars because it doesn't fulfill the whole intention of a docking station. It's also irritating that Dell's site only showed this station as an option when I bought my laptop, while they offer several other options with some of those capable of providing power. I would have gladly bought a different docking station if the site had shown me all the available options.

I wanted to connect both laptops to all three monitors plus the peripherals. It was difficult to find a device that would let me do this. I combined this docking station with a Plugable A/B switch and it works perfectly. The software was easy to install and it worked without problem. It also helped to dramatically clean up the cables on my desk. Would recommend it.

Get one of the USB C offerings I had read old reviews talking about software problems with this dock, but saw there were firmware updates since then and mistakenly assumed they were resolved. Wrong. Lots of strange bugs with resolutions that result in more bugs. Its sitting in its box in the corner of my office now and I need to figure out how to return it. The bought one of the newer USB C docks and no issues.

I called 4 times from the US, three of them i was disconnected while waiting for more than 30 minutes and being passed around from agent to agent OR WAS HUNG UP ON!!! by the agent. the other time the agent said my fresh out of the box product was out of warranty and wouldnt tell me why! Super unhelpful "technical" team AND there is a restocking fee for returns. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE OVERALL.

All of the Dell hardware and software support people tried everything to get my laptop to work, but did not know to install this driver. I only found that out from Tier 3 support after 35+ hours of regular tech support.

Picture quality is definitely better for the newer monitors I have, but one issue I have to this docking station compared to the one I had that uses the USB-C port, is besides the fact it doesn't charge with one cable but if forgets all the video settings if it sits for more than an hour, so I have to wait for it to re-acquaint itself with all the monitors plugged every time I start using my laptop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Returning I guess the plug that goes from the dock to the laptop is supposed to power the laptop as well but it dosen't, plus the end that plugs into the laptop is USB which you still have to use the USB to usb-c converter to plug it in. When I plugged the HDMI into it to my tv it would not work. Wireless screen sharing is weird cause the mouse is all off and lags and the screen won't fit the tv correctly. All kinds of problems. Got the xps 13 with i7 16gb ram. Movie skips frames when plugged directly into tv. I'm returning all of this. I'll stick to my i5 desktop. Let me know when you want my money.

The D3100 is a the perfect dock in my opinion. The built quality is superb and it's small!

My goal was to create less clutter (not more) on those days I am teleworking. Also, the external power cable is just one more thing to unplug as I move from home to work several days a week. My second issue is that it is not very beefy. I set it up and it worked OK; I was just underwhelmed with my confidence that this would hold up.. I am returning the item and looking for a better option.

You can connect a monitor and a laptop to use the dual screens but you could also do this by simply plugging in the HDMI cord to the laptop instead of plugging in the USB cord to the docking station. The device is really a high powered USB extension plugs.

Furthermore, the HDMI ports resolution is low compared with what the recent laptops offer nowadays and to make things worse, the refresh rate is merely 50Hz. I have a 42 inch display, and connecting it to the Docking Station provokes the display to not use the full resolution, which I have no issue but having the refresh rate at 50Hz makes anything rendering very slow. In my opinion Dell should stop selling this and offer a better option.

I’ve never seen a docking station that doesn’t charge a laptop, and for what this cost it absolutely should have this feature.

I ordered this with unit with my laptop purchase as it was the docking station Dell recommended, yet it did not work properly because it needed driver updates. Even after the driver updates it is still not working 100%, it is partially working but my monitor is not working right through the docking station and neither are some of the USB connections like mouse, keyboard, etc. I believe it will all be resolved with some more updates and tweaks but a brand new Dell laptop purchased at the same time as the Dell recommended docking station should not need so many updates and tweaks.

It’s only been two days but my monitors have probably froze up more than a dozen times. Also the docking station does not supply a charge to the laptop so you need to have an additional power cord going to the computer as well as the docking station. Very clumsy to other docking stations I have used in the past.

And I’m unable to get the bolt to fall through the air vents, so it is trapped inside the casing. Luckily, I noticed the loose bolt prior to powering on the unit, not sure what type of damage could have occurred to the computer and/or monitor.

I had multiple issues with thunderbolt docks and could not resolve displayport issues so decided to go back to USB and once the dock was connected, it immediately addressed all my issues. USB does not provide power to laptops, and it requires more cables but its a proven technology. I have 3 external monitors that ran perfectly w TBT dock until it just stopped working. The one thing I wish is that this USB dock had more USB ports available but this is easily address with a port extender. Good buy overall.

The USB cord to connect the dock to your laptop is very long so if you plan to have the dock tucked away you will need a longer cord. Another thing to note is unlike the USB-C docks this does not power you laptop.

If many are used, it takes quite a bit of space for all the cabling, since they run out of both sides. A very nice add-on might be some kind of a raised platform for the laptop to sit on and the docking station with cables all nestled below.

Bought the docking station for an extra monitor, but the connection to the new Dell laptop only caused problems with the monitor. Changed VGA cables, HDMI cables, and monitors with less than satisfactory results. I bought a new Dell monitor and the problem continued until I disconnected the docking station from the monitor and ran the HDMI cable directly to the laptop. Perfect picture now. No bouncing pixel boxes.

An occasional pause, whether it be due to the docking station processing, the wireless transmitter and some other culprit, is bothersome but unimportant with what I do with the computer. Others may find it more irritating depending on their computer use.

It has a good number of connection ports and is very accommodating for the monitors you may wish to use. I have used various Dell docking stations in the past so after setting it all up and running for some time I was surprised when the battery was showing at 72%. I rechecked the included material and unlike other docking stations, this one does not supply power to the laptop. The connection diagram shows one wire from the docking station to the computer but fails to show a wire from the computer for power. It was a little misleading but was easily remedied by attaching the laptop's power to the computer.

I was searching for some time trying to find options to use three monitors with my desktop ranging from spending $300+ dollars on a graphics card to spending even more than that on a docking station. Then I came across this dock and it has plenty of inputs for USB connections as well as 2 HDMI and 1 DP input for all three of my monitors at a really nice price.

I was worried that I’d have to fiddle around with installing a driver or something and I’m really not tech minded, however, it was really as simple as plugging in (to the mains and laptop) and attaching the screens, mouse and keyboard and away I went. Couldn’t be more satisfied with this product! I downloaded the drivers for Mac to use displaylink for my M1 macbook 13 in and it works perfectly. The item worked perfectly from USB 3 with the 2 HDMI ports. The 3rd video port is a full size displayport which I've not tried yet. Also I'm not utilizing any heavy lifting on the graphics as the machine is for coding only. The charging is also great so I can use 2 displays, usb ports, and it charges my macbook through one thunderbolt port.

The unit doesn't charge the computer so you have to plug the unit and the laptop at the same time. The cable that connects the unit and the computer is too short and rigid (not flexible enough). Every docking station I have owned, allowed you to connect the laptop without plugging it in with a power and usb cable. This docking station requires you to plug in the power cable to charge your laptop AND a usb cable to communicate to a secondary monitor. This docking station is worthless UNLESS you have more than one monitor or accessory to connect to.

It drives them both, as well as a set of speakers, an HD webcam, a USB-powered fan, and a 4-port USB hub that has even more accessories tied to it. There was almost no configuration needed to get the monitors to display correctly on initial power up. Functionally, it's great. My minor complaint is that the power supply used to power this is NOT the same power supply used to power the laptops, so you still need to have your laptop power available. This means two outlets used and I can't keep my laptop charging brick in my bag for travel - I need it at my desk. With cable management, this requires some effort. If the dock had a power-out option for the Dell laptops, it would make for a true docking station, rather than just a port-multiplier.

And, it is small enough that it doesn't take up a lot of space on my desk. This is docking station is very convenient, so that when I need to pack up my laptop and leave, I only need to unplug one cable. This docking station is perfect for my setup.

The main setbacks are 1) the lack of passthrough charging 2) Can't use proper display resolution for my LG ultrawide (3840x1600) when using HDMI or DP through the dock 3) Lack of a power button to turn on the laptop or wake from sleep when docked. Otherwise it gets the job done.

It was easy to connect the dual external monitors. However, It does not have any USB-C ports, it does not charge the laptop therefore I have two connections from the laptop. One for the docking station and a second for the charger. Lastly, there is no external power on/off button, therefore, you must keep your laptop lid open and use the power button on the actual laptop.

You have to use up a USB port to connect rather than just locking into the back of your laptop. When I first connected it there was no sound. I had to go searching for a driver to update my docking station (should have been automatic). Once I updated the dock, the monitors were lost. After several reboots, everything started working as it should.

I like the product, but I do have several style issues/complaints. After putting this together and watching my son play on it. There are several things I would l to see, a few more ports and I really liked how dells used to snap onto docks. It feels more secure. So, if you have an eleven like would break the world if he could. This might not be the one you want, but that does not mean this thing is not nice. Would recommend. Andre

I can charge my headphones and portable charger all whole have the Ethernet connected to my computer so I can play games without worry about anything crashing. I would definitely recommend this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dell device connection problems I purchased this docking station when to replace an upgraded docking station that could also charge my Vostro laptop along with a 27" Dell monitor. The upgraded Dell docking station couldn't connect to a one year old Dell laptop so switched back to the D3100 and it can't connect to the 27" monitor. Dell devices should connect to Dell devices but I guess that is not always the case. Working off of a laptop screen with a 27" monitor sitting next to me that won't connect.

Next boot used normal windows OS. 09/22/23 Recently purchased a Dell Docking Station – (D3100) to work with Dell precision 7740 Optiplex 7080 & 7050 on goal of making switching computers without having to unplug/replug USB, audio cables and three monitors Dell P3221D DP, P27195 HDMI and SE2716H HDMI. HDMI monitors at random intervals go black for a 1-3 seconds then return to normal. Same behavior was observed on both 7740 & 7080 computers. (have not installed the 7050 yet) Was suggested by local tech the D3100 will not handle video load, need to upgrade to a more powerful dock. Have a Dell WD19TB dock will that handle the load? Deleted & reinstalled monitor drivers & Display link manager, no joy. Contacted Dell support and have not heard back...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from D3100 DOCK STATION - A GOOD DEAL FOR THE PRICE It does what I need it to do - easily integrate my laptop into a desktop setup. I only wish that I knew that it would not power my laptop through the USB port (still need to power the laptop separately).

Two monitors, wireless keyboard and mouse, ethernet, headphone jack (if I need), a camera, and there room for another monitor, still open USB ports, and its all running from my laptop. Super easy to disconnect my laptop when I want to take it away from the desk.
