Rated 5 out of 5 by from It has simplified the management of the array. Valuable Features:There are tools in place that allowed easy migration from our existing infrastructure, i.e., our EVA arrays. We have a great relationship with HPE that has worked over many years. We have great confidence in what they can deliver for us and that it will fit in well with our existing environment.Improvements to My Organization:The availability of the 3PAR array is the greatest benefit. The ability to perform upgrades to the machine while it remains online is very valuable. It saved us from making our systems unavailable. In addition, the tools that are built into the 3PAR array are a significant improvement and give us great visibility into what's actually being used and how it's being used. It has simplified the management of the array.Room for Improvement:If you're familiar with 3PAR, there are multiple GUIs that have been available over a course of time and the new SSMC GUI is excellent. It has great consistency against the HPE line, so that an operator is immediately familiar with it. However, there are a few features that were included in the previous GUI that haven't been brought forward, or maybe are not quite as obvious. I would like to see some of those previous resources brought forward, or at least an option to see an emulation of that previous GUI.Stability Issues:We had great availability and stability with our previous HPE arrays and that has continued with 3PAR. We have not had a single incident of downtime nor have we had any service interruptions of any kind.Scalability Issues:Scalability seems to be very good. I think it's been one of the strengths of HPE products in the array space for a long time. With 3PAR, the scalability is excellent.Technical Support:The technical support is very good. The folks that have come in to work with us, particularly on some of our software upgrades on the machine, have been excellent. The field service staff is just superior.Initial Setup:I was involved in the initial setup and it was complex. There is more to it than there was in previous arrays, but I think that really ties into making the machine valuable to us. We probably have to rely on HPE a little more for the setup, but they did such a great job. I understand that it was necessary and I appreciate it.Other Solutions Considered:Our arrays were getting on the older side. The new array fits in with our existing infrastructure very well. We have a great history with HPE support and it wasn't a difficult sell. We did look at other options, but in reality, because of the long-standing great relationship and outstanding support, we went with HPE.Other Advice:For their own benefit, they really should consider 3PAR. It's so reliable, functional, has great support from HPE, and it is tied into so many of the HPE family of products. Valuable Features:The most valuable features are having the proper contacts, getting a better price, and becoming certified. For example, our partners get certified because we are the only partner who has the most certifications.Improvements to My Organization:It has helped us work much better.Room for Improvement:HPE Mexico takes a lot of time to register and deliver. After we negotiated the final price, HPE releases it and then it takes 48 to 72 hours to deliver it. This is not the best deal.Use of Solution:for the last 4 yearsStability Issues:The stability is great for our customers and for us. It's perfect.Scalability Issues:The scalability is sufficient. We are expanding our operations now.Technical Support:I have used technical support and I would give them a rating of 8/10. Their staff just came from university and they are still getting experience.Initial Setup:The initial setup was very complex, because it was our first installation.Other Solutions Considered:We didn't evaluate any other solutions besides HPE.Other Advice:Of course, you should go for it. We are an HPE shop and we have to focus on that. Valuable Features:The ease-of-use, reliability, and the value I get for the capacity are the most valuable features. All of the deduplication and compression features allow me to buy much less storage to fulfill my business needs. I don't have very many support issues with it.Improvements to My Organization:The benefit to the company is less down time. I can put my time towards other things, such as finding ways to increase performance or doing more proactive tasks.Room for Improvement:Support has gone down a little bit in the past few years. It's hard to get the right person initially and sometimes you have to wait for a call back. It was better when it was 3PAR.Stability Issues:Stability is great and it's getting better every year. I have less and less issues as HPE works on the software.Scalability Issues:Our newer array is much more scalable than I had in the past. I don't anticipate ever reaching a limit on it.Technical Support:Overall, technical support is great, other than some problems getting connected with the right person. But once you get to the right technical resources, they are very easy to work with and quickly resolve our issues.Previous Solutions:Initially, we were using another HPE DBA product and we were hitting its limits. So this was a great fit for us. We bought it just before HPE acquired it and the solution has been great ever since. This solution replaced a product that wasn't scaling well for us. Now we have a nice, scalable solution.When we are looking for a vendor, we want somebody who can be a true partner with us and not just somebody trying to sell us something.Initial Setup:I was not involved in the setup of the original 3PARs we have, but I was involved in five subsequent installations. They were straightforward compared to other storage products that I've used, such EMC.Other Solutions Considered:I'm sure they probably looked at EMC, but I wasn't there for the initial sale. For now, we are staying with HPE.Other Advice:Don’t have any second thoughts and just go with it. It's really a great product and should fulfill most business needs. Valuable Features:Data optimization, i.e., basically we have an adaptive and dynamic optimization about the clear structure of the data and this is the most valuable feature that comes with the HPE 3PAR solution.Improvements to My Organization:This product is scalable, i.e., when you have a need for the performance and to grow online, without having any downtime. It's really optimized for any application.Stability Issues:It's pretty strong; actually, it is five nines (99.999 percent).Scalability Issues:You can scale as per the demand and definitely, you can start with a one disk enclosure and then go up to nine to twelve disk enclosures, without having any performance issues.Technical Support:I'm really impressed with the technical support, the team is very effective and they do resolve issues on time.Initial Setup:The setup was pretty straightforward.Other Advice:I would definitely recommend it.The reliability, scalability and support are the important criteria whilst selecting a vendor.We've been with HPE for a long time and we'll stick with it.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Valuable Features:Its ease of administration and reliability are the most valuable features.Improvements to My Organization:It allowed us to put storage in remote facilities without purchasing a complete SAN solution.Room for Improvement:There is a need for just cleaning up the administration page a little more and making it a little faster. We'd like to see a little more preemptive alerts for the usage and spikes.Stability Issues:Stability has been great, we haven't had any issues with it. The normal firmware patches come out to keep it up to date.Scalability Issues:Scalability has been great. As we have needed to add storage, its just a matter of adding the disk and then, adding them to the bulk.Technical Support:For the 3PAR the technical support has been great. They've been able to help us with any issues that we've had.Previous Solutions:This was a net new solution for our remote facilities so we had nothing in place. This was something that we purchased and built out ourselves.Initial Setup:I was involved in the initial setup and it was very straightforward, specifically for the way that we wanted to configure it. It was the ease of administration, setting up the pool, connecting it to the chassis and then, zoning it to our brocade fabric that made the setup straightforward.Other Solutions Considered:We looked at Dell, EMC and Pure Storage. However, HPE was the only one that provided the flat SAN solution that we wanted for those remote locations.The important factor while selecting a vendor is the range of products for the solution in terms of the issue that I'm trying to fill. Also, how the vendors support their products and the price are other crucial factors that we look at before selecting a vendor.Other Advice:Make sure you're looking at everything that's out there and that 3PAR has come a long way.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from We're using deduplication a lot so getting a return on our investment there is great. Valuable Features:Easy management is huge as is the scalability and the performance.Improvements to My Organization:We're using deduplication a lot so getting a return on our investment there is a great. We're getting a lot of performance through that, so we're running probably a 1000 VMs on a 7440 that has done pretty well for us.Room for Improvement:It would be nice to see reporting around percent of utilization on the performance side. It tells you what you're doing in the reporting but I would like to know what my array's capable of, versus what I'm using.Stability Issues:It's very stable.Scalability Issues:I don't know if you can really fix this but to upgrade from 2 nodes to 4 can be a hassle because you have to re-balance everything. So you have to either do a lot of work or duplicate what you've got which can be expensive. I don't know if there's a good way to fix that though, other than start with 4 nodes.I think we're getting towards the upper end of what we have and with what HPE would consider our array is capable of and what percentage of that would be helpful, so we don't have to try and guess. Because you know you ask how many IOPS an SSD can get and they'll say, "Yeah, 2000 to 3000," something like that. Who knows what you're actually going to be able to get out of it. Based on your IO size and things like that, being able to see a clear picture would be cool.Technical Support:With 3PAR WE haven't had to use technical support.Previous Solutions:We came from using Hitachi, so provisioning and that sort of thing is way easier with a small team. It's a lot easier to use, the SSMC and management tools for 3PAR than it was for any of the Hitachi tools that we used.Initial Setup:I'd like to be able to license different tiers of disks for different features. We have arrays that we could use for different purposes really. And so if I'm using near line drives for camera backup, I don't want to have to license them for things like dynamic optimization that I'm not using them for. If they're in the machine, now you have to license everything. So I'd like to see that. It might make things more expensive but I do like the model that Pure uses where it's just everything's included.Other Advice:Get 4 nodes at the start. I would say that's important. Plan more long term rather than what you need now. Get the licensing and nodes you need upfront, makes it easier to expand later.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The most valuable features are performance and support. Valuable Features:The performance and the support are pretty good.Improvements to My Organization:Performance. We used to be with NetApp. The overall performance is much better with this solution.Room for Improvement:Maybe they could have better alerting. We've had an issue where we had a flapping network link, and it didn't tell us that was happening. We only saw symptoms of the issue. I'd like to see better reporting for those types of issues. Even though the support is better than NetApp was, there are still some improvements they could make in their support.Stability Issues:The stability is very good.Scalability Issues:The scalability is good.Technical Support:I have used technical support and it usually is good. Their support is very hands-on compared to NetApp. Sometimes we have issues where they, just like any other vendor, point fingers at either networking or the hardware. We've encountered that with them, as well. Overall, support was good.Previous Solutions:The old system was outdated. We were having performance issues with it and the support wasn't great. It was just time to shop for a new the solution. When selecting a vendor, I look for support, performance, and customization.Initial Setup:I was involved in the setup and it was straightforward.Other Solutions Considered:Our shortlist included Nimble and 3PAR. One reason we changed was because we have local support.Other Advice:I still think it is the best solution out there. Rated 4 out of 5 by from The ease of moving data around is beneficial. Valuable Features:The ease of moving data around is very beneficial and will become more beneficial as we get to the next level, in regards to federation. Other things that are beneficial, for one thing, the speed of it is very good for us. We are specifically buying full SSD arrays for our pure zero environment and that's giving us the speed and reliability that we need. The other thing is, migrations have been quite easy to move from older XP arrays to 3PAR. That's been a huge benefit and I don't think could've done that with any other product. It's been very easy. Yes, we've run into some little things here and there but overall, I think that's been our biggest strength with the 3PARs that we currently have.Improvements to My Organization:Again, moving data around. Speed and the fact that, once we start getting into full SSD arrays, we don't really have to worry about performance issues anymore. So, to the end consumer, which in our line of work is going to be hospitals, they're getting patient data a lot faster, so we don't have to worry about that so much. Of course cost is another benefit of it. It is cheaper for us to go with a 3PAR rather than the XP line. That was a huge reason why we went to 3PAR. Just the other benefits that we found from there, I think have really provided us very good confirmation that we made the right decision on that.Room for Improvement:The one thing I don't like so much about it is, one thing that I'm dealing with quite a bit lately is, the fact that GA releases of the code, General Availability releases, they don't feel like they're as proven as some of the other arrays that we've dealt with. When we get a GA release from another array, whether it be the XP array or the VMAX or something like that, they seem more stable. The 3PARs, when you're dealing with a GA release, they feel like they have a lot of bugs in them.We've run into those and they say that we need an upgrade, but doesn't answer my question so much because I'm sitting there going, "OK, I can upgrade but I do a major upgrade once a year." I have many, many arrays and I can't just go, "Oh yeah, we'll just upgrade this here, this here." It doesn't really work that way because I have to go through certain change control processes, I have to go and plan everything out and then I start getting into it. That's what we're about to start here next month, our annual firmware upgrades on all the arrays. I'm hitting bugs in the current firmware and it's like things become unresponsive. I haven't had a problem with an array going down, but I have had problems with getting management to that. The GA releases just don't seem to be well proven out and that's the one thing that I really wish they would improve at some point. I know I'm not the only customer that has run into that.Stability Issues:As far as stability is concerned, most times they just work. That's the thing I really like about it. We just sit there and let them run. Yeah, we've run into little things here and there but most times we're not having to go through and do any troubleshooting. In fact, since we don't do it very often, you run into the question of, "How do I do this?" Now I'm having to go back through and go, "OK, well you ran into this problem; well this is how you're going to troubleshoot it." Well, three months down the road, they may have not experienced any more performance problems and then, "Oh, now we've got something else. Let's go investigate that." It's one of those things, like it's a good and bad thing, because we are performing very, very well and we don't have to do a lot of that troubleshooting but we kind of forget how to do it, you know, over time. Honestly, that's a great strength of it. We don't have to sit there and turn the dials and switches and try to get the thing to perform just as the way we want it to. Out of the box, it pretty much performs to what we need.Scalability Issues:I have something along the lines of 65 or 70 arrays. Manageability is a big key. We're working very close with HPE trying to figure out how to manage these better because my SSMC servers are only able to handle 32 arrays at a time. I'm growing rapidly. I'm bringing in new arrays every month. I can't just do one SSMC server. In fact, what I've done is, we have different rooms per site and each one of those rooms has their own SSMC server because we need the growth. I'm sitting here with, I don't know, six or seven, maybe more than that, SSMC servers right now. It's more than that; probably 10 or so SSMC servers. So, we're obviously working with them.Technical Support:Technical support really depends. It really depends upon the person you get on the first level. Some people that I talk to are incredibly smart. They will go and start tracking down things and finding things out and I am very pleased to get those people. There are other people that I get that are just like, "Oh, well you need to do this and that." Well, I've already done all that. This reminds me of an issue I ran into not very long ago. I contacted support and they were like, "Go do this and this and this." It's like, "Well, I've actually done all of that." The problem is the fact that, because I've got a lot more experience and everything, I'm starting to hit the same knowledge level as a level two guy. So I'm sitting here going, "I've already done everything you did." I'm looking at these things in the log that I don't completely understand. Can you help me understand these. It's like, "Well, we don't; I don't know what that is or whatever," and they have to escalate it. I'm like, "OK, well, you should've probably asked for an escalation first."Don't get me wrong, there are some really, really smart people. I just run into it in the first level support sometimes where my knowledge of the situation is much more than what the level one guy is, either because I'm already in the fire or number two, I've already pretty much diagnosed it to where I need it to be and I need it to be escalated on their end.Initial Setup:The deployment's pretty easy. We have onsite services that build the array and then we go in and configure it.Implementation Team:They're coming to us on site but they're pretty much dedicated to us. They do have other companies that they help with, but since we have so many things going on, we're pretty much on a first-name basis with a lot of them, so we don't really have that problem. For us, deployment is fast. We can get an array of, if the CE's available to do it, to build it up to the point that we can take over and do our little customizations, we can easily do it in a couple of days. This is far better that what the XP arrays were. The XP arrays required a week or so of formatting. We don't have to do that formatting with the 3PARs. That is one huge thing, where we can just go: Here's another array up and running.Other Solutions Considered:I'm not going to say we're a one vendor shop, we are primarily an HPE shop. We have probably 95 percent of our stuff is HPE. We do have a little bit of EMC and that's who was in the running. I can't speak to necessarily why that decision was made, per se.From my personal experience between EMC and 3PAR, 3PAR's a little bit easier to manage in my aspect. It also seems to be somewhat a little bit more reliable. It has those features that you need to do some of the things such as mobility, whereas, on the EMC side, you have the XtremIO, which is all SSD; very, very fast. I don't know about reliability because I've not used it that much. In order to get the mobility out of it, you have to put a VPLEX in front of it which adds latency onto your transactions. It also adds a layer of complexity and it chews up a ton of SAN ports. With the 3PAR, we can put all that in, in a smaller SAN factor, not use so many SAN ports and we get all of that in basically a one-bundle thing. Plus, the vast majority of what we're deploying is 3PAR, so we don't need more than that. Going on the EMC route just doesn't make a lot of sense to us. It's a business decision way above my head, but from my perspective, and I think from other engineers' perspectives, since the decision was made to stay with HPE on a lot of things, it just makes more sense to us to do it that way.Other Advice:There's enough bugs in it and there are a few things that I wish were a little different, and I can go into that a little bit, but from there, I feel that compared to other vendors that I've worked with, it is very easy. That's the one thing that I really like. It's not, I can easily write up some sort of work instruction and go ahead and do it this way and they'll follow it and it works. That's the thing that I think any store or any storage array really needs. It needs to just work. Yes, when you have problems with it, it has problems but overall, I want it to be easy, I want it to be fast and I want it to work.I don't have a whole lot of experience with other products and I think that's kind of where things would have to lie; they would have to do a head-to-head battle between two different places. For me, the ease of provisioning to servers and that sort of thing is one of the key parts. The other is that the features that are involved in it, being able to do snapshots which we don't actually do yet, snapshots and replication, that sort of thing straight out of the box. The ease of doing that, the manageability of it, is what would lean me to doing more 3PAR than it would be another vendor. But again, you'd have to do a head-to-head battle with it.
