Product Reviews
Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 17reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by It is very fast which makes our life easier to run huge queries for analytics. Valuable Features:We use Aginity to access Netezza database. We really like the way we can dominate the physical distribution of the data hence know how to improve the performance of the query. Netezza on its own is very fast which makes our life easier to run huge queries for analytics.Improvements to My Organization:This has really helped us to improve the performance of our Data Marts and warehouses. We can run our reports very quickly. It has also improved the turn around time of business requests.Room for Improvement:In Aginity there should be a way to format the SQL queries. I think we can't format the query the way we can do it in Oracle editor (beautifier). Say, for example, if we are trying to get the DDL of an existing view, we lost the formatting. It's a minor issue, but important from usability point of view. Other than this, I think we are good so far with Netezza as a whole.Use of Solution:We have been using this product from last 5 years.Deployment Issues:We did not experience any issues.Stability Issues:We haven't had any issues.Scalability Issues:We've not experienced any issues.Other Advice:If volume is the issue, use Netezza. Nothing is better than this product.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions. October 14, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by It has allowed us to get reports that were previously unavailable, but the in-house development tool needs work. Valuable Features:There is minimal on-going maintenance.Improvements to My Organization:There were some reports we couldn't get because of performance, but with Netezza we could get more of them.Room for Improvement:It needs a better in-house development tool.Use of Solution:I've used it for three years.Deployment Issues:Functions are difficult to deploy.Stability Issues:No issues encountered.Scalability Issues:No issues encountered.Customer Service:7/10.Technical Support:7/10.Previous Solutions:Our customers mostly switch from traditional RDMs to appliances.Initial Setup:It is very easy to setup.Implementation Team:We used an in-house vendor who were 8/10.Cost and Licensing Advice:Choose your most complex scenario. Do a POC and try to scale.Other Advice:You should know how it works well so you can use its power. So, start with a partner or vendor team.Disclaimer: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer:Premium Business partner September 25, 2016

Rated 4 out of 5 by We are now able to analyze products, stores, suppliers and sales as quickly as we need. Valuable Features:* Easy Deployment* No Indexes* Extremely fast to respond queries with high amount of data* Data distribution based on hashtable concept* Zonemap* Easy to migrate dataImprovements to My Organization:My customer is one of the biggest retail companies of Brazil. The company uses SAP and other technologies to manage their process but they didn't have an efficient way to process data and take a better view about their business. The appliance Netezza gave us the capability of process terabytes of data and gave us new directions and ideas to make our business more profitable. We are now able to analyze products, stores, suppliers and sales as quickly as we need to take a decision to handle any kind of issue or prevent loss of sales.Room for Improvement:Concurrent Queries, with this model (1000-3), we had a very big problem using front-end tools connected on it. When using a dashboard tool to use data directly from the database, I had a big problem with queries being queued and stopped running. Looking at the manual I read that Netezza has a limited number or concurrent process.Use of Solution:For the last 4 years. I am a data architect responsible for the design, the implementation and optimization of all process related to it.Deployment Issues:No, I haven´t found any issues.Stability Issues:No, I haven´t found any issues.Scalability Issues:Yes. If the Demand for clock or disk space grow over the limit, it will be necessary to change the appliance, because it's not possible to upgrade any component of this machine. You have to buy a new one with a bigger capacity.Customer Service:6/10 – Some issues about this equipment I had to discover by myself. I think that the vendor did not give me the best support to use the appliance. The machine is excellent, but I had to discover everything by myself as well figure out how to use the equipment in the best way.Technical Support:6/10 – I don't know if it is related to the SLA of my customer, but I think that the things are not as fast as they should be when we need help.Previous Solutions:I used to have Oracle as my Data Warehouse solution, but despite the fact of it is very good to manage transactional environments, it does not work as fast as Netezza. We have analytical demands so we need an analytical solution. Sometimes we need to retrieve and process our whole table of inventory so it means around 16 billion of rows. Netezza can process all this amount of data and give a result in less than 40 seconds. I have never seen this performance in another database solution before.Initial Setup:The setup was not complex. It was fine. Initially the vendor gave us all the support, including a hands-on course before using the machine.Implementation Team:We implemented by ourselves, my team and I implemented everything.ROI:I do not have this information.Cost and Licensing Advice:I am not able to give this information.Other Solutions Considered:Yes, I evaluated Teradata and Exadata. Initially I thought that Teradata would be better, so my customer was not able to afford the costs. Now I am sure they made a good choice.Other Advice:Try to find someone who had already worked with this appliance to have some tips and advices to help you to use it as better as it can. I take too long to discover the best way to make it work well. With my team, I have created a data environment using Netezza as Data warehouse solution, ODI to run the ETL process, shell script. We have now five years of data stored in the Netezza database and we distribute data to all BI Applications easily and quickly. However, it would be better if we had some useful help in the past.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions. May 4, 2016

Rated 4 out of 5 by It has Standard SQL, ODBC, JDBC, and OLE DB interfaces. Valuable Features:* Supports both business intelligence and advanced analytics* Efficient even if being used by thousands of users at the same time* Streaming architecture based on blades* Compatible with the most popular business intelligence and analytic tools* Standard SQL, ODBC, JDBC, and OLE DB interfacesImprovements to My Organization:We had lot of POC's on data warehousing project with the help of Netezza, we have proved that it has really improved time on doing analyticsUse of Solution:I have used this solution for more than two yearsDeployment Issues:There were no issues with the deployment.Stability Issues:It's reliable and available, with 99.99% uptime.Scalability Issues:There were no issues with the scalability.Technical Support:Support for this product is good.Initial Setup:Initial set-up was straightforward.Implementation Team:It was done by an in-house team.Other Advice:It is good product if you are choosing to go for datawarehouse business intelligence.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions. Rated 4 out of 5 by ARULES() function is the fastest implementation of the associations algorithm (a priori or tree) I have worked with. Valuable Features:ARULES() function is the fastest implementation of the associations algorithm (a priori or tree) I have worked with. In comparison with the R associations package, it is +1000x faster. The issue with the R implementation, and R in general, is that the functions do not work on large sets of data. R would generate a 100,000 x 100,000 element matrix for some of the arules runs we do – very, very inefficient programming.Improvements to My Organization:Any in db machine, learning functions help by eliminating the data transport issue. NZA goes one better by allowing you to utilize a tuned engine (software + hardware) to run the functions. The result is that we can run algorithms that would be impossible to run on other platforms.Room for Improvement:We are using an older version. Some improvements are already implemented, such as the addition of neural networks. Other improvement would be to make the existing algorithms even faster, e.g. kmeans can actually be parallelized. If this reworking of the algorithm is done, it should leverage the MPP architecture of Netzza and run much faster. Also, some algorithms are faster than almost any other method or system e.g. NZA.ARULES() function. Whereas others are not as fast and could probably be optimized for an MPP architecture like kmeans function.Use of Solution:2-3 years on and off. 1 year for actual integration into another tool for mass consumption.Deployment Issues:For deployment, ensure you follow the instructions. The version of Netezza must be matched with the version of NZA. We tried to install a newer version of NZA not supported by the version of Netezza we had and it did not work.Technical Support:N/A. We did not engage IBM tech support, mainly due to past experiences where it is faster, easier and much less stressful to just figure things out yourself.Previous Solutions:Rapidminer, R, DB2 intelligent miner, SSAS data mining were all tested for association rules. Rapidminer and R did not pass. They use matrix math, and cause +100x performance degradations. DB2 intelligent miner, SSAS data mining, and likely also NZA follows the original a prori methods of using sets, not matrices.Initial Setup:DBA set it up, but it seemed very simple. I helped with designing the overall architecture. If you stick with NZA as a “function repository DB” concept and do not put data on it (as recommended in the install manual) you will be ok.Implementation Team:In-house. Don’t over think it. Just apply some base architectural principals and give it a try. If you find something not working make adjustments.Cost and Licensing Advice:I had nNo visibility to pricing. Netezza in general though, is very cost effective. If you compare to other MPP platforms like Hadoop. Hadoop requires a very “non-enterprise” culture to implement and a team of designers / engineers. Netezza requires maybe 1-2 admins.Other Advice:I would have to understand the specifics of the organization, the data size, the tasks, etc. to make any recommendations.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions. Rated 3 out of 5 by ?We now have a single store of critical business metrics in the investment bank. Valuable Features:* Distributed querying* Seamless concurrency* Fast loading* High velocity analyticsImprovements to My Organization:We now have a single store of critical business metrics in the investment bank.Room for Improvement:The query optimization is crap, and the machine could use more alerting around bad design and bad queries.Use of Solution:I've been using it for four and a half years.Stability Issues:Releases from IBM are poorly tested, but once they work once, they’re stable – i.e., the machine only goes down immediately after an upgrade.Scalability Issues:Scalability is fixed. It’s big, but not at all scalable.Technical Support:Moderate. IBM is really good at communicating to us that they take our problems seriously, but they don’t seem to fix them very quickly.Previous Solutions:We were saddled with this.Initial Setup:The setup was straightforward.Implementation Team:We implemented it in house. My advice would be to follow the tool, and not try to force a schema designed for another system on it.ROI:We have no ROI. We’re a cost center.Other Solutions Considered:No other options were looked at.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions. January 5, 2016
