Product Reviews
SimpliVity OmniCube CN-3400 - hard drive array is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Having a private cloud for my organization is valuable. Valuable Features:The ease of managing this system! I love having a private cloud for my organization.Improvements to My Organization:The inline dedupe and compression has allowed me to run all my servers and appliances (total 52) in an HA configuration while taking up just 4U of rack space. There is incredibly fast I/O and with the OmniCubes, my users are spoiled with the super-fast reads and writes. Did I mention that we truly enjoy our 99.999% up time?Room for Improvement:I gave it an excellent rating, thus I think it's well excellent! If there was anything I would like to see, it would be indexed backups. You have to hunt a bit if you have to restore a file. Index the backups and it would be perfect!Use of Solution:I have used it for 19 months.Deployment Issues:We did not encounter any deployment issues, at all; very smooth transition from traditional virtual environment storage. Everything was done during normal business hours with absolutely no interruption of service to my end users! Awesome!Stability Issues:We have not encountered any stability issues. It's rock solid.Scalability Issues:I haven't had to scale out yet, but I don't anticipate any issues.Customer Service:Customer service is excellent +++.Technical Support:Technical support is excellent +++.Previous Solutions:We had an aging Compellent SAN which was critically close to running out of disk space. Dell would not sell me an additional disk enclosure, thus forcing me to do a forklift upgrade. Moving to the Simplivity HCI allowed me considerably more resources and we came in under budget.Initial Setup:Initial setup was very straightforward. It's almost plug and play!Implementation Team:A vendor team implemented it. Expertise was excellent. I couldn't have asked for better.ROI:I'm not in finance, so I don't know the numbers, but I do know that I've since added 10 additional VMs and appliances, and can still add more without having to buy anything. I've saved on VM licensing because I was able to get rid of SRM.Cost and Licensing Advice:This solution, while costly as all these solutions are, was in fact less expensive than upgrading my old SAN. Licensing is easily maintained. Keep in mind that you still have to license VMware per processor.Other Solutions Considered:Before choosing this product, we also evaluated Nutanix and Dell Compellent.Other Advice:Having my private cloud within my Simplivity infrastructure has given me so much more than I could have ever expected. I love the ability to fire off a full, application-aware backup of a VM and have it complete in just under four seconds. Also, I can now fail my entire data center over to my DR site and have everything up an running in well under 30 minutes, with my mission-critical servers up in under 10 minutes (the servers do have to power on!). It's awesome. You do need EZ-DR by VM20/20 to accomplish this, but it is a fraction of the cost of VMware Site Recovery Manager.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compression and deduplication of data at inception yielded more capacity than we expected. Valuable Features:Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) or the consolidation of the traditional server stack; i.e., compute nodes, storage, and storage networking were a perfect fit for our environment. Also, SimpliVity's compression and deduplication of data at inception yielded "more" capacity than we expected. Furthermore, the ability to backup our data without requiring additional storage media or software application was a huge gain. Finally, the reality of having a remote disaster recovery (DR) site without needing heavy financial investment sealed the deal for us.Improvements to My Organization:In a thinly provisioned IT staffed environment, we were able to accomplish our work without having to stay after-hours anymore. Our backup RPO and RTO policies are met and done during business hours. Issues are resolved by calling one support line/number. No more headaches and hassles with finger-pointing blame between/among technology vendors. We now have a DR site with the ability to failover our production servers.Room for Improvement:* Increased storage capacity for big data, something that we have not had.* DR "automation."Use of Solution:We have used it for two years, since January 2014.Deployment Issues:We have not encountered any deployment issues from SimpliVity, but rather we had a misconfiguration on our network switch, which the SimpliVity installation engineer resolved for us. We were up and running within four hours.Stability Issues:We had to update a SimpliVity patch that made the networking compatible with our internal networking.Scalability Issues:We have not encountered any scalability issues. We've added nodes into our server federation without issues.Customer Service:Customer service is 10/10.Technical Support:Technical support is 10/10.Previous Solutions:We previously used a different solution. It was not a true HCI.Initial Setup:The initial setup was almost painless! We had a misconfigured network setting, which the SimpliVity engineer resolved for us at no extra charge.Implementation Team:We have a SimpliVity sales engineer do the installation. I would rate him to be an expert. The installation was completed within four hours.ROI:HCI has indeed reduced the complexities of our server environment. My systems architect/engineer now has more time to work on other pressing projects and investigate new technologies, which he was able to acquire and implement. No need to work overtime to resolve issues anymore.Cost and Licensing Advice:Talk to your SimpliVity team about it. They will assist you in right-sizing your environment and getting you the correct systems and licenses so that you are able to accomplish the same production or more for less than your current infrastructure.Other Solutions Considered:Before choosing, we evaluated Cisco UCS FlexPod. We also evaluated and did a proof of concept (PoC) of a direct competitor's product after our SimpliVity acquisition. In short, we validated our investment with 100% confidence.Other Advice:Be open minded and consider a PoC to run some of your production load. You won't be disappointed.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It offers instant file-level restore. No deployment or scalability issues. Valuable Features:Instant file-level restore is the product's most valuable feature.Improvements to My Organization:We have marketing users that tend to save over their files by accident and before SimpliVity, I could not restore a file from 15 minutes ago. Now, I can do that for my users.I also was able to install a disaster recovery site with this solution and it has given our IT team peace of mind knowing we have full backups offsite.Room for Improvement:The production server infrastructure is an area with room for improvement.Use of Solution:I have used it for six months.Deployment Issues:No issues with deployment.Stability Issues:We did encounter stability issues at first due to a CPU issue.Scalability Issues:No issues with scalability.Customer Service:Customer service is top-notch.Technical Support:Technical support went above an beyond to help get our network environment ready for the upgrade.Previous Solutions:We had old end-of-life and end-of-support servers.Initial Setup:Initial setup was very straightforward with fantastic documentation from the project team.Implementation Team:An in-house team implemented it.Cost and Licensing Advice:I recommend a five-year contract, as it will give you the best ROI.Other Solutions Considered:I researched many different options before choosing.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Removes all the complicated tasks of backup storage management. Valuable Features:* Integrated backup and DR features* De-duplication and compression* Management using the vSphere client* Total ease of managementImprovements to My Organization:Backups - policies are built in and managed using the SimpliVity extension in vSphere. It makes working with backups and recovery extremely simple and removes all the complicated tasks of backup storage management. The ability to place backups at any datacenter within the vSphere environment is nice too. These are full backups too, not just snapshots.Room for Improvement:Reporting - improvements have been made, but I would like to see some enhancements for recalling historical information: automated reports on storage efficiency over time and backup growth over time.Use of Solution:I have used it since January 2015.Stability Issues:I have not encountered any stability issues. We were able to migrate all of our legacy environment of physical servers and data over to SimpliVity with no issues. Performance was improved and storage efficiency with the deduplication really works. When we had an Accelerator card fail in one host (the card manages the deduplication tasks for the host), we got an alert the card had failed but never had a service interruption. The card on the other host takes over for the failed card until it is replaced. Very resilient.Scalability Issues:I have not encountered any scalability issues. We initially started out with a 2+1 configuration and then scaled up to a 3+2 with no issues.Technical Support:Technical support is the best. Their first-line guys know the product and can solve issues. I have always had any issue or support request resolved in a timely manner and by the same guy who was assigned the ticket.Initial Setup:Initial setup was very easy. I actually set up the “Federation” myself one Saturday morning with no help from support. I just followed the instructions for the rack and stack, powered up assigned IP addresses to the networks it required and the embedded wizard did the rest.Cost and Licensing Advice:The nice thing about SimpliVity is that ALL the features are included in the base price. You don’t have to try to pick and choose and fight the pricing game.Other Solutions Considered:We looked at other solutions before purchasing SimpliVity (Nutanix), but SimpliVity was a better fit for our requirements and had what I judged as features Nutanix could not compete with.Other Advice:Do your homework and compare them to the competition apples for apples so that you see the value the product has from features, ease of use and pricing.I have spoken to other customers at SimpliVity road show events and serve as a customer reference for them when asked. I really believe in the product that much.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Provides Inline deduplication, instant recovery of data across datacenters, and low latency. Valuable Features:Inline deduplication, instant recovery of data across datacenters, low latency, easiness of management. The solution is fully integrated in the Virtual center client, which makes for a very lean learning curve. Simplivity adds as a plugin into virtual center and delivers a fully featured dashboard. Backup Policies are VM-centric, but can be applied at a datastore level as well. The dashboard displays live and historic latency values, overall and for each VM, and is used as a GUI for backup and restore. Backup and restore are performed automatically but can be also performedmanually at any time. This is done with a couple of klicks and takes a few seconds.Improvements to My Organization:We consolidated five servers and one SAN with three arrays into two OmniCubes. Our SAN was full with 20 TB at the time of migration, and we accomodate the whole amount of data into less as the half of the disk space. Since then the infrastructure grew constantly, but the data foot print on the Omnicubes barely increases. Dedup is currently around 3.3. Additionally, we implemented DR with a third OmniCube residing in a second datacenter, where we replicate our data. Recovery of VMs is done in a couple of seconds. We now almost never use our backup software to restore data anymore.Room for Improvement:Some proactive / predictive monitoring of VMs health would be a plus. Speed in cathing up with Vmware Esxi releases could also be slightly improved.Use of Solution:1.5 yearsDeployment Issues:No.Stability Issues:No.Scalability Issues:No.Customer Service:Excellent support.Technical Support:Perfect, the technical team is great, one of the greatest I know so far.Previous Solutions:No, this is our first hyperconverged solution.Initial Setup:Not really, OmniCubes were deployed in a couple of hours.Implementation Team:Through a vendor, their expertise was good.Other Solutions Considered:We looked at Nutanix and vSAN.Other Advice:We have found no other solution in the market which has the same full set of features. Specifically inline deduplication is unique in its implementation here.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I like the ease of management and speed of deployment. Valuable Features:Data protection that is inherent with the system. Speed of deployment and extremely easy to manage. Backup and replications take just seconds! I have a junior level tech maintaining the system!Improvements to My Organization:We update our main pharmacy system monthly at three locations. Standing up a test environment for validation takes just minutes. Also, during the upgrade process after hours our maintenance window has decreased over 50% with blazing fast entire server backups.Room for Improvement:Upgrades/Patches to ESXi have to be approved by SimpliVity and their support installs them...along with upgrades to their virtual controller. That's the one downside to having such an easy to manage integrated console...it needs to be validated against ESXi.Use of Solution:2 yearsDeployment Issues:NoStability Issues:NoScalability Issues:NoCustomer Service:Great.Technical Support:Technical Support is very knowledgeable and responsive. First Class.Previous Solutions:Legacy Dell Equallogic SAN. Needed a datacenter refresh and loved the feature rich all in one SimpliVity solution.Initial Setup:It was very straightforward. Your part is to provide LAN connectivity, Ipmc and rack them. Implementation team pretty much handled the rest including knowledge transfer.ROI:Given we needed a datacenter refresh, we were able to implement SimpliVity at a cheaper cost than replacing our legacy compute and SAN. We inherited true business continuity (priceless)...and were able to prune our preexisting server backup solution. Just the backup solution software costs saved us >$15,000 annually. ROI was instant.Other Solutions Considered:Cisco Flexpod/NetApp, Dell Compellant SANOther Advice:This solution protects your data with minimal effort. Due to the deduplication, optimization, compression and small block size; our replication happens every 15 minutes without feeling it. We have a very elaborate backup schedule that allows us to keep various levels of backups for extended periods times without hardly using any physical storage. A savings rate of over 130 to 1!Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It is compatible with vCenter only; however, the company says Hyper-V and KVM are coming shortly. Valuable Features:* Integrated data protection* Inline deduplication* Hybrid performanceImprovements to My Organization:One customer deployed the OmniCube for a test/dev environment for it's ease of use and performance. Developers can spin up new VM's with no capacity or IO impact, easily without learning a new storage platform. And as for performance, the customer had a VMAX for primary storage, the OmniCube offered similar performance for developers at a fraction of the cost.Room for Improvement:The fact that it is compatible with vCenter (VMware) only; however, the company says Hyper-V and KVM are coming shortly.Use of Solution:I am not a user, as an integrator, I've worked in multiple environments with the OmniCube technology.Deployment Issues:No, it was very simple.Stability Issues:No issues encountered.Scalability Issues:100 VM limit per OmniCube (not sure if its the OmniCube or VMware related).Previous Solutions:Customers have moved to SimpliVity for ease of use, consolidation of vendors, reducing cost, improving performance, improve data protection capabilities, and even managing storage at multiple sites.Initial Setup:Feedback has been that it is very simple since it is managed entirely through vCenter.Implementation Team:SimpliVity stays very involved with all installs at this point, minor involvement of vendors from an install perspective.ROI:Varies based on use casesr... VDI, test/dev, production database and apps, etc.Other Solutions Considered:Most comparable would be Nutanix, both solid solutions. Depending on use case, you could go back and forth with which one makes the most sense.Other Advice:If it's a VDI usere case, how many endpoints on day one, what's your projected growth for the next 5yrs? If it's to replace primary SAN, what is your network today? You do need 10GbE networking.Disclaimer: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer:Partner
