Rated 4 out of 5 by Review about Turbonomic Valuable Features:Automation options for moving and resizing VM's as necessary have ben crucial for our environments performance.Improvements to My Organization:automating move and resize tasks have allowed our team to spend less time micro managing VM's and more time completing projects.Room for Improvement:Alert emails could be more comprehensive. The name kind of drives me crazy... its hard to say "turbonomic" in conversation and have someone take you seriously.Use of Solution:almost a year.Deployment Issues:minimal - we were lacking proper licensing for our environments hardware.Stability Issues:noScalability Issues:noTechnical Support:very goodInitial Setup:initial setup was very smooth and easy to executeCost and Licensing Advice:Be very clear about what your needs are to ensure you receive proper licensing.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions. Rated 4 out of 5 by I don't have to care for and feed each individual VM, nor make sure that the environment's balanced just the right way. The reporting could be better graphically. Valuable Features:The biggest value I'm getting out of VMTurbo right now is the complete hands-off management of equalizing the usage in my data center. VMTurbo distributes all of my VMs equally across all of my hosts. I don't ever have to think about when a host is in more heavy use if there's going to be constrain on that single host that it lives on, because it rearranges everything for me through VMotion control.Improvements to My Organization:The big benefits for me is a lot of times savings. I don't have to care and feed for each individual VM, and make sure that the environment's balanced just the right way. Also, I'm able to see which of my applications are taken out more cycles, more compute cycles and RAM usage. I really can understand my environment a little bit better.Room for Improvement:The one point is the reporting. We do have reports out of it, but they're not the level of graphical detail I would like. One of the reasons we went with VMTurbo was because we wanted to replace vCOPS. We weren't getting the level of granularity and alerting out of vCOPS to really understand our individual VMs, but VMTurbo, I think, could do a little bit better job on reporting. I would love to use them in our monthly metrics meetings to really show in a very nice graphical way how our environment's growing, how many VMs did we grow from one month to the next. They have some recording features that we could have a little bit better for us.Stability Issues:VMTurbo has been very stable for us. I can't actually recall an instance where it's crashed on us. We have rebooted it, and it comes right back up, and continues right where we left off, and continues the manager infrastructure.Scalability Issues:We started out with VMTurbo in our development and test data center managing over 400 virtual machines. The same instance now manages our entire production data center with our SaaS platform that all of our customers connect to. I wouldn't have to change anything. The virtual appliance handle it without breaking a sweat.Technical Support:I had a question that came up, and I didn't know how to do something which was how to get very detailed application load on a particular server. I called it to the support, talked to the support gentleman, and he helped me get to the bottom of it. We actually even leveraged their development resources. He got them on the call with me, and so I was able to easily and quickly talked to tier III or even development support directly to me as a customer.Previous Solutions:We have some specific instances come up where vCOPS was making recommendations on something like a SQL server. It said, "Hey, you only need 12 megabytes of RAM or 100 megabytes of RAM for the SQL server." Even old OS's just can't run with that low amount of memory. VMTurbo when we looked at it, we understood that it was going to make better recommendations. So far, that's been the case. We've been able to fully automate the distribution of our VMs amongst our hosts, where vCOPS and DRS really weren't doing the right job for us. They were creating imbalanced hosts. Some hosts, we get overloaded, and we've ran into big problems.Implementation Team:It was very easy because it's a virtual appliance. We were able to plug it into our network, connect it to vSphere, and within a few minutes of scanning our environment, it was able to plug in and connect to all of our VMs, and manage them for us.I was still having to babysit a lot of the VMotion requirements for my environment. I was having to move things around manually. VMTurbo has promised, and the promise they delivered on was out of the VMotion machine in eight months. That's been a huge time saver for me, and I can trust it to take care of my environment.Cost and Licensing Advice:Price is a big one. VMTurbo was very competitively priced. We also were able to get additional modules that helped us with our specific needs without much more costs.Other Solutions Considered:Actually no. We were looking for a specific need, and I really hadn't seen anybody else out there besides what vCOPS said they could do to deliver automatic load balancing of virtual machines as well as right sizing VMs automatically, and that I don't know anybody else out there doing that same thing.Other Advice:I would say if you have a VMware environment that you are having to spend almost any time load balancing and VMotioning your machines, you're going to need VMTurbo. If you have constrained resources, if you have a limited budget on how many hosts you can buy, you're going to need something like VMTurbo to make sure that the applications that need CPU and RAM are getting it, and the ones that don't are resized so that you can get those resources back.In reviewing it, we really like to get hands on. We engaged a lot of times through the VMware user group. We get sponsors out to those meetings. We can talk to them face to face. We also talked to our co-members, and find out what they're using and see what kind of results they've had. We've only heard nothing but good things from VMTurbo.Disclaimer: IT Central Station contacted the reviewer to collect the review and to validate authenticity. Rated 4 out of 5 by It provides us with intelligently-controlled VMs with consistent performance, including identification of over-provisioned VMs so that we can take back resources. Valuable Features:It automatically adjusts resource allocations and VM placement to improve utilisation and ensure service delivery. Increased visibility and control has meant higher VM density per host. The 'plan' tab allows for accurate capacity forecasting for upcoming projects.Improvements to My Organization:We now have intelligently controlled VMs with consistent performance, it has helped us avoid purchase of additional hardware and software through increased utilisation in excess of 90%. It also eliminated configuration and capacity planning guesswork and has even identified where people have over-provisioned VMs so we can take back those resources and use them for other VMs.Room for Improvement:User Interface can initially seem a bit 'busy', but you get used to that once you learn what it's showing you.Use of Solution:We have used this for 2 yearsDeployment Issues:No, it only took 15 minutes to get up and running!Stability Issues:Initially there were some minor problems in the earlier releases, but these appear to have been overcome and the product has been very stable for at least the past 12 months.Scalability Issues:NoCustomer Service:Very goodTechnical Support:Excellent, VMTurbo even proactively contact us when new releases come out to ensure we have been able to update ok and to explain the new features of that release.Previous Solutions:We used to manually try and work out where we had spare resource using tools like vCenter and NetApp System Manager, we had to move to something more intelligent as it was clear that we had untapped resource available, but we couldn't identify with 100% certainty where it was.Initial Setup:Very straightforward, we powered up the trial VMTurbo virtual appliance, gave it an IP address, pointed it at vCenter and the NetApp clusters and started using the product straight away.Implementation Team:In-houseROI:Our ROI was less than 12 months as we would otherwise have needed to purchase additional hardware and VMware licenses during that time period, as we were previously adding at least 4 CPUs worth each year.2 years later we still haven't had to purchase any more, even though we have had a significant increase in the total number of VMs running in the environment.Cost and Licensing Advice:It's very reasonable when you compare it against the cost of buying more VMware hosts, licenses and potentially storage. Don't forget to include the ongoing support costs for the additional hardware and VMware licenses as those really rack up over the 3-5 year lifespan of a server!Other Solutions Considered:We looked at vCenter Operations Manager, but the effort involved just to stand up a PoC environment was significantly more than with VMTurbo, so after a web demo of vCOps we decided not to proceed with that option.Other Advice:Give the demo version a go, you might be surprised by the results!Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions. Rated 4 out of 5 by Forecasting allows you to forecast and simulate new environments. I can add new hardware, test and predict how our investment will impact our performance. Valuable Features:The most valuable feature for us is the feature which allows Forecasting. Forecasting allows you to forecast and simulate new environments so you can decide what to add to your environment and what won't work. Looking to add Cisco nodes, for example, I can add new hardware and test and predict how our investment will impact our performance.Improvements to My Organization:The direct impact is that we decided to expand our platform and I needed specific numbers to see how a specific node would impact our environment, we were able to get specific reporting. That’s direct ROI. The feature that allows you to optimize and distribute your loads according to the balance of your “sweet point,” balancing your load against your compute is very valuable for decision making.Room for Improvement:I think that the interface can use some modernizing and less abrupt transitions. There has already been a good attempt but need to dig deeper.Use of Solution:We have been using the solution for one year.Deployment Issues:No, it was great.Stability Issues:No issues with stability.Customer Service:They are very responsive.Technical Support:They are great - very responsive.Previous Solutions:We have tried other solution, VCOPS as well as Virtual Instruments. VMTurbo was unique – other products were not as complete a match.Initial Setup:Initial setup was straightforward.ROI:Price is a little bit steep – if you have a targeted project, then its worth it, otherwise ongoing costs can be a little steep.Other Advice:Understand the product and what it does, it falls into a little bit of a luxury tool, know how they approach the problem and you have to know your platform. This is not the kind of thing you buy off the shelf.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions. May 27, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by It does things way beyond DRS and Storage DRS. Our past monitoring solutions just overwhelmed us with data. Valuable Features:The Automation and Planning capabilities are unique, innovative, and game-changing for us.Improvements to My Organization:We are able to maintain a much higher level of performance and efficiency in our virtual environment with the same or reduced levels of staffing.Room for Improvement:We would like to see VMTurbo develop more application-specific modules that give us additional visibility into the end-user experience.Use of Solution:18 Months.Deployment Issues:No issues with deployment.Stability Issues:No issues with stability.Scalability Issues:No problems with scalability.Customer Service:Excellent.Technical Support:Excellent.Previous Solutions:We used monitoring tools like Solarwinds Orion and vFoglight. They're fine products but they don't really compete with VMTurbo in that they are not actually performing command and control operations. VMTurbo actually does things way beyond DRS and Storage DRS. Our monitoring solutions just overwhelmed us with data and there's a big difference between knowing a problem exists and proactively preventing or fixing one without human involvement.Initial Setup:We simply installed their VM and turned it on. Thirty minutes later we made the decision to go live with virtual machine automation and have not looked back.Implementation Team:No, we did it ourselves with relatively minimal support from VMTurbo.ROI:I would say we recouped our investment within two months. We were purchasing an average of six or seven hosts per year (at $20K-30K each). Based on the increased awareness of our infrastructure utilization rate, and VMTurbo-driven performance efficiencies, we eliminated the need to buy and deploy any new servers for 18 months.Cost and Licensing Advice:I think our startup cost was around $49K (plus another $40K or so for the VNX storage module eight months later). The day-to-day cost is about $50/day.Other Advice:Just load the demo. It's completely non-invasive and you will probably be blown away by how much over-provisioning you have been doing.Disclaimer: IT Central Station contacted the reviewer to collect the review and to validate authenticity. Rated 4 out of 5 by After implementation and turning on the VMTurbo DRS in automated mode we recognized better and balanced performance. Valuable Features:* After implementation and turning on the VMTurbo DRS in automated mode we recognized better and balanced performance on hosts and VM's.* We use the reports and reclaimed a lot of wasted storage.Improvements to My Organization:There are fewer tickets about VM performance problems.Use of Solution:3 YearsDeployment Issues:No. It comes as a virtual appliance which is installed and configured quickly. The update process to a newer version or patch level is simple.Stability Issues:No, very stable.Scalability Issues:No issues with scalability.Customer Service:ExcellentTechnical Support:The support team at VMTurbo is so quick in responding. I always get an answer to my questions and they always get me the support I need when I need it. I’ve been very impressed.Previous Solutions:We use other Monitoring Tools but not with these automation features.Initial Setup:It comes as a virtual appliance which is installed and configured (IP Settings / vCenter connection) quickly. Around half an hour and you are ready to use it. Some hours later the first recommendations come up.Implementation Team:In-houseOther Advice:Another aspect of being a VMTurbo customer is being a member of the Green Circle Community, an online community for innovators, virtualization experts and forward thinking IT professionals who engage with one another and share their experiences.I’ve been involved since the beginning of the Green Circle, and it’s been such a great platform to engage with and help others. The community is so diverse, and you know that what you read is true.Disclaimer: IT Central Station contacted the reviewer to collect the review and to validate authenticity.
