Product Reviews
Windows 10 Pro - upgrade license is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Users can use Miracast to the Surface Hub for meetings and client walkthroughs Valuable FeaturesMost of the best Windows 10 features are centered around getting you where you want to go faster. The new right-click menu is fantastic from an IT perspective. It gives access to many commonly used tools, like Device Manager, Computer Management, PowerShell, Task Manager and Programs and Features, right from the desktop. The new Task Manager is also much more fully featured and informative. The overall speed of Windows 10 is fantastic as well. It boots quickly, shuts down quickly, and the overall use is snappy and responsive.Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise come with fully featured Hyper-V ( https://www.itcentralstation.com/products/hyper-v ). Desktop admins can create VMs for testing purposes without the need for extra machines.Improvements to My OrganizationUsers can use Miracast to the Surface Hub, which is great for meetings and client walkthroughs.Room for ImprovementThe settings and control panel are oddly disjointed. Things that show up in the Control Panel do not always show up in Settings and vice-versa. It is a pain to remember what is where.Use of SolutionWe have used this nine months in production.Deployment IssuesThere is also a tremendous amount of bloatware on Windows 10. Without performing offline maintenance on the image, you have to clean up quite a bit of stray apps and consumer level services to get it to be usable in a corporate environment.Stability IssuesOur version of Trend caused Windows 10 to freeze unexpectedly at random times. Only after Trend released a compatible version did the issues subside and the OS become stable.Scalability IssuesWe use SCCM ( https://www.itcentralstation.com/products/sccm ), so scalability is no issue, once the imaging process was ironed out.Customer Service and Technical SupportWe primarily use online forums and communities unless you want to pay Microsoft to open a support case. It does benefit from being the most popular OS on the planet, as there is amble advice out there from third parties.Previous SolutionsWe used Windows 7 and are migrating to be ahead of the support EOL.Initial SetupIt takes a few iterations of installing Windows 10 to get everything tweaked to a place of having a smooth imaging and configuration process. Little things like registry tweaks, GPO tweaks, take time to iron out. Having an imaging solution is a must to scale in any way.Implementation TeamWe implemented it in-house. I did the implementation.Pricing, Setup Cost and LicensingGet a KMS server and a volume license if you are a medium sized business. Being able to wipe and re-image is crucial for long term stability of your fleet. Having a Multiple Activation Key (MAK) makes it so every new activation counts against your total.Work with a reseller like CDW ( https://www.itcentralstation.com/products/cdw-communications-outsourcing ) to get licensing costs that fit your needs, as Microsoft's model is confusing.Other Solutions ConsideredWe did not evaluate other options. We need to use Windows to support our finance applications.Other AdviceWindows 10 is the best parts of Windows 8 and Windows 7 rolled into one. Windows 8 started a lot of features and functions that shine here in Windows 10, while the criticism has allowed Microsoft to work at user experience more for this iteration. There is a bit too much bloatware by default, and some strange decisions about settings aside, it is a great OS that should only get better with time.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Review about Windows 10 Microsoft has been closely watching the onslaught of this new ransomware epidemic and added a slew of new features to the second major update of Win10 which is called "Creators Update" — Win 10 CU for short — which has been rolling out for a few weeks, consumers first.Presenting new anti-ransomware protection features added in Win 10 CU, Robert Lefferts, Director of Program Management, Windows Enterprise and Security, said that no Windows 10 customer was affected by the recent WannaCry ransomware outbreak that took place in mid-May and no currently known ransomware strain can infect Windows 10.From a security perspective, CU is a massive improvement. The new security features include the following list, apart from a host of non-security related additions like a 3D version of MS Paint. :-)* Click-to-run for Adobe Flash in Edge — which prevents ransomware and other malware from landing on Windows 10 PCs via exploits kits and drive-by downloads.* Instant cloud protection via Windows Defender — According to Microsoft, starting with CU, Windows Defender AV can suspend a suspicious file from running and sync with the cloud protection service to further inspect the file.* Fast remediation mechanism at detection — Microsoft says it has made great strides to "remediate ransomware infection and limit ransomware activity from minutes to seconds, reducing its damage from hundreds of encrypted files to a few." Microsoft credits this to Windows Defender AV’s behavioral engine, who can aggregate malware behavior across processes and stages.* Improved detection for script-based attacks — Microsoft says its Antimalware Scan Interface (AMSI) was modified to intervene during the strategic execution points of JS or VBS script runtimes, two infection vectors often used by ransomware.* Wow64 compatibility scanning — In CU, Windows Defender AV added a process-scanning feature that uses the Wow64 compatibility layer, enabling it to better inspect system interactions of 32-bit applications running on 64-bit operating systems.* Process tree visualizations — feature added to Windows Defender ATP, the commercial version of Windows Defender.* Artifact searching capabilities — feature added to Windows Defender ATP.* Machine isolation and quarantine — feature added to Windows Defender ATP.* Windows Edge browser — better protection against remote code execution attacks.Overall, your average user will probably not notice the differenceOverall, it's a good update, but it stands out for its incremental tweaks and behind-the-scenes improvements to matters such as security, updates and privacy, rather than for spectacular new features.Obviously, you will not be able to roll this out immediately in your organization, despite the CU security improvements. Implementing CU is likely not a priority if you have just started to deploy Win10, and you might jump straight to the next major update, codenamed Redstone 3 which is due later this year. The update is available to MSDN/TechNet subscribers running the Enterprise, Education and IoT Core edition. Organizations that have Windows via the Volume License Service Center have been able to get the update since May 1.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This put a scope (pre-assessment) on those applications unready or behind in development efforts. Valuable Features:Application Start control, of course, but the refresh and deployment was beneficial to our global efforts. Lot of accounting types in organisation. AZURE AD subscriber has updates within product. Compliance to ECCN/CCAT (exporting), NIST, ISO, IEEE; quick and efficient closure. Abandon IE, Mozilla (e.g.Chrome, FireFox); settle with EDGE was challenging and big adjustment. This put a scope (pre-assessment) on those applications unready or behind in development efforts, devops pre-scanning had to be deployed. Long 10 months and rework in devops, set SDLC with some suppliers to perform or loose, sign-offs on setting on virtual site (i.e. closed to desktops by policy).Project include 2016 Office 365 Products, and fresh start.Improvements to My Organization:Reduction of security incident events and mundane tasks in 3 months.Room for Improvement:Lots of updates, but not lots of production.Deployment Issues:We've had no issues with deployment.Stability Issues:It requires a lot of updates in order to be stable.Scalability Issues:We've had no issues with scalability.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.
