Product Reviews
Rated 2.5 out of 5 by 8reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by We have one of these, it was a promo/freebie for re-working our other larger models. We like it. its small enough to setup easily and has has 3 or 4 locations in the office over the last few years. I vaguely recall on service call on it... but not what that was for. Its working fine still. Only issue I had was a back order of parts combined with users not telling us about the "reorder but do not replace" type message until "OMG we're down". I was a little surprised at the waste tray... seem slightly flimsy compared to the usual Xerox standards, that said we've cleared it a few times and it keeps on going fine despite the demand user put on it. Rated 3 out of 5 by This is a good printer for either the single user or a small owrkgroup without a large print demand. The solid ink blocks are a cool idea but this process has its drawbacks. March 29, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by I read some of the negative reviews of this device and I come away with the fact that some people have unreasonable expectations. Look at the details and match the device to what your really need.If you need to do a large volumne of scanning this device and any in this tier is not what you want. Purchase a desktop scanner or stepup up to a device in the next tier. With that said this device has a heavy duty print frame. We have a small (2 person) branch office that has one of these and over the last year they have put about 160,000 pages through the device. They primarily generate full color duplex reports but use the top end for scanning on a regular basis (4-500 pages a week).Only one service call on this device for a noise it was causing. The Xerox tech showed up late the same day and the cause was a new batch of paper that was just received. The tried some cheap paper and the noise disappeared. Ordered a new batch of high quality report paper from our supplier and the noise disappeared. So otherwise not a single issue in a year. The ink is not expense because when you calculate cost per page it is actually a little less than B&W.Color quality is much better than laser color devices and speed is about two to three times faster for full color jobs.Warm-up time is not an issue because the has settings to adjust when it will be used and be ready in the morning. It actually uses less than about watt of power when sitting idle, warmed-up waiting for a print job.Writing on the printed can be an issue if you are printing forms but do your really need color on a form. Also you can just fields the fields on the form blank without shading and just highlight the field name. We use it that way for our client application and highlight the name in yellow but where they write information is clear.Bottom line is be realistic and if you are looking for a device to spit out good quality pages for a great price this is the device. Rated 1 out of 5 by Wax blocks are too expensive and the print quality isn't always that great. Like the above stated, we had the scanner assembly changed out 3 times and went through multiple maintenance kits and hours of cleaning to get it back in acceptable shape. We finally sold it on Craig's list and bought a Konica-Minolta C550. Well worth the money! June 7, 2010
Rated 2 out of 5 by Yogo top and Chevy bottom.Major hassles and delays in getting delivery.Bottom end functions pretty well. Printing is fairly reliable, cost effective. Print quality is good and print head cleaning is effective and straight forward enough. Printing is noisy though and you get crayon-stink when you do a large batch. Can't write on solid ink prints, but is fine if all you want is a handout.Top end design was out sourced. Many limitations, low res, no twain driver, not appropriate for large scans due to breakup of large scans to several pieces, no scan to email and the Xerox tech support is completely ignorant on scan, fax, and similar technologies.Http administration is clunky but serviceable. To add insult to injury Tech support is criminal in its policies. I had a new (under warranty) unit where in the sensor lever on the scanner feed tray was broken (a two dollar part). You know the story... no one knows nothin. Anyway, I called the vendor who sold it to us. They researched it (apologetically) told us they would have to charge us to replace the entire scanner head for over $1,000.00.as Xerox would not sell the part or provide disassembly instructions. I checked. Yup, Xerox wanted the same to send their own guy who would just swap out the entire top half (which isn't worth a grand to begin with).I finally beat on Xerox's customer relations team to get a reasonable repair.A year later I had to spend another 600.00 to replace a major part.I am so done with these (and Xerox) June 7, 2010
Rated 2 out of 5 by Print Quality is nice, as long as you do not use the scan utility for anything. Having just spoken to level 2 support, the scan utility was an afterthought, and has numerous known bugs. No estimated time to fix either. Also, no scan to email without first having the utility installed on a PC.No scan utility for win7 64-bit, so creating user documentation is extra-onerous. Also SNMP gets wonky with these same PCs, causing it to go offline at random. It hasn't broken yet, but the "we've done a number of things as afterthoughts" makes me think I will be busy trying to support this. Rated 2 out of 5 by One of our admins loves these things but from my perspective it has always been a big pain. every phaser we have had has broken early and often October 1, 2009
Rated 1 out of 5 by We purchased four of these units. Two of the units are in our main branch, and two are at remote offices. Of those, three have required major repair or replacement within a month of purchase. Replaced the scanner assembly three times on one unit (before they replaced the printer) and one of our remote offices had to have the motherboard replaced. Warm up time is anywhere from 5-15 minutes, and don't expect to write well on a printed form with a ballpoint pen (due to the wax). We've had enough problems and loss of productivity that Xerox is replacing all our units with the WorkCentre 7232. Stay far away from the 8860 MFP. The solid ink may be cheaper, but with all the productivity lost due to downtime you'll likely face you might as well stick with standard toner. February 11, 2009
