The MacBook Air is lighter, more portable, and budget-friendly, while the MacBook Pro offers superior performance, better displays, and more ports for demanding tasks.
UCSF IT officially recommends 24GB of RAM and 512GB internal drives to ensure optimum performance levels with standard security suite and standard productivity applications.
UCSF IT does not recommend or support using a MacBook Neo for typical workloads at UCSF as it does not currently satisfy the amount of RAM recommended for optimum performance, which is 16GB for students and 24GB for any users running medium-data applications.
For higher specs, please submit a Custom Configuration Laptop consultation ticket for the Apple computer configuration options. Higher specs are suggested for special use cases such as photo/video/audio editing, STEM environments, 3D rendering, software development, and running virtual machines.

All Apple device orders through UCSF, including Macs, iPads, iPhones, Apple TV, and Apple Watches, must be registered with Apple's DEP by CDWG regardless of funding source. No exceptions.
- This is necessary for inventory control and Activation Lock management. Review UCSF’s procurement policies at https://tiny.ucsf.edu/ComputerPurchasingOverview for details.
Automatic MDM enrollments for Apple devices are managed by UCSF IT Desktop Engineering, not by Apple nor CDWG.
- You must submit a ticket at https://help.ucsf.edu and attach your purchase order or shipment confirmation from CDWG into the ticket for any student orders whose Macs need to be released from UCSF’s enterprise device management service. CDWG has no access to any of UCSF’s Mobile Device Management (MDM) systems, and this must be processed by UCSF IT Desktop Engineering.
