The EMC Avamar Virtual Edition - the industry's first deduplication virtual appliance for backup and recovery - consists of EMC Avamar software deployed as a virtual appliance. It enables the deployment of a complete Avamar server on an existing VMware ESX Server, leveraging the attached disk storage (up to 4TB) and infrastructure. Since all aspects of the backup and recovery process are encapsulated and virtualized, control and management are also streamlined, reducing demands on your IT staff. Avamar Virtual Edition has the added benefit of cost-effective Avamar virtual-to-virtual, or Avamar virtual-to-physical server replication to meet your disaster recovery objectives.

With EMC Avamar backup and recovery software's global, source data deduplication capabilities you get fast and efficient protection for your VMware environment. Avamar protects virtual machines by deduplicating data at the source - so that only new, unique, sub-file, variable-length data segments are sent during daily full backups. This dramatically reduces the daily impact on the virtual and physical infrastructure by up to 500x as compared to traditional full-backup methods. White traditional backup software moves upward of 200 percent of the primary backup data on a weekly basis. Avamar removes backup bottlenecks and enables even greater levels of server consolidation.

With Avamar you can back up data globally across physical and virtual servers. For virtualized environments, flexible backup options include guest or image-level backups - with the latest VMware vStorage APIs for data protection (formerly VMware Consolidated Backup). Only new and unique sub-file, variable-length data segments are transferred across the virtual/physical infrastructure. You can also deduplicate data stored within virtual disks (VMDK files) for highly efficient disaster recovery replication. And Avamar provides fast, single-step recovery of individual files as well as complete VMDK images.
