SAP Data Services software, Edge edition, gives small and midsize businesses a solution for data integration, data quality, data profiling, and text analysis. Providing a robust foundation for enterprise information management (EIM), it helps you to integrate, transform, improve, and deliver trusted data to support your organization's critical business processes and decisions. The need for clean, trusted information is at the core of every data initiative. Faced with huge data volumes and disparate data sources, business users must harness and make sense out of chaos. As organizations grow, data volumes expand exponentially, causing CIOs to question how they can best utilize strained and limited resources. The answer can be found in an integrated, flexible EIM environment.

SAP Data Services, Edge edition, supports data integration, data quality, data profiling, data auditing, and unstructured data within a single solution - one development user interface, metadata repository, runtime architecture, management console, security, and data connectivity layer.

SAP Data Services Edge edition - license is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Matching Transforms are quite complex but Connectivity with SAP is a valuable feature. Valuable Features:Connectivity with SAP and low impact on SAP environments. Also overall stability of the product.Improvements to My Organization:Kellogg (the company I work for) used this product for data migration into the new SAP environment that we have established for North America. We also used the tool during the Pringles acquisition.Room for Improvement:Matching Transforms are quite complex.Use of Solution:5 years.Deployment Issues:No issues that would impact our timelines.Stability Issues:Data Services is extremely stable and stability information steward is considerably higher in version 4.2 than it was at the initial version 4.0.Scalability Issues:Easy to scale horizontally or vertically.Customer Service:Satisfied.Technical Support:Needs improvement as far as responsiveness.Previous Solutions:No.Initial Setup:I was not directly involved at the initial setup.Implementation Team:I heard Kellogg used a combination of SAP and Accenture for the initial setup.ROI:Data Quality has an indirect ROI and we have not derived a fixed number.Cost and Licensing Advice:Since I was not involved with the initial setup I am not able to answer a question about the start-up cost. As far as day-to-day cost, it is minimal (1/4 FTE) due to its stability.Other Advice:Depends on the environment. If you are connecting to SAP environment I would recommend involvement of a 3rd party vendor with experience.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Auto documentation & recovery of jobs are valuable but when working with custom functions, repeatedly fails to execute. Valuable Features:* Impact and Lineage analysis.* Auto Documentation.* Recovery of jobs.* Text Data Processing.Improvements to My Organization:I've done a migration project (from OWB to BODS) in Singapore. The reason customer opted for BODS over OWB was automated trigger E-mail when job fails and the recovery of the jobs from the point it failed in the last execution. Also, when loading data from flat files, once the data loading from a file is complete BODS is capable enough to call any batch files to move the processed files to another location after completion.Room for Improvement:When working with custom functions, many times it fails to execute (from 4.0 onwards) because of the data types mismatch errors. This has to be corrected.Use of Solution:More than 6 Years.Deployment Issues:No issues with deployment.Stability Issues:No issues with stability.Scalability Issues:No issues with scalability.Customer Service:100% as no manual intervention is required once the solution is implemented.Technical Support:100%.Initial Setup:It was quite straightforward for me as I had experience with other ETL tools and the concepts.Implementation Team:Through vendor team and the level of expertise was satisfactory.Other Solutions Considered:OWB.Disclaimer: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer:My company is a Partner with the vendor.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Easy to use, but a lot of versions over the years which makes it hard to sync up with older versions of the same tool. Valuable Features:Scalability and easy to use.Room for Improvement:There are a lot of version improvements in the years and makes it hard to sync up with older versions of the same tool.Use of Solution:1 Year.Stability Issues:It is very stable and doesn't crash easily.Scalability Issues:Nope.Customer Service:On a Scale of 1-5, I would give them 3.Technical Support:On a Scale of 1-5, I would give them 3.Initial Setup:It was already setup on the client system. I used it just for ETL purpose.ROI:Pretty GoodOther Advice:Its a very great tool to be used for ETL process. It has support for all the databases and in most cases, it generates SQL by itself which is a big help for beginners.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unusual behavior of tables where only solution is to recreate them could be improved but custom functions were valuable. Valuable Features:Lineage analysis where used, export options, custom functions, connectivity to Business Warehouse (BW).Improvements to My Organization:Fast data load to BW PSA, more integration options between different DBs.Room for Improvement:Connections to DBs (datastores), unusual behavior of temp. and permanent tables that just get corrupted sometimes and only solution is to recreate them or re-import from data store.Use of Solution:1 year.Stability Issues:Sudden crashing of DS making unsaved changes lost, happens usually when logged in for a long amount of time.Scalability Issues:Nope, its good in extending the features in terms of DWH scalability.Technical Support:Good support is available via consultants.Previous Solutions:Previously BW was being used, but is was a closed system , we had new source application which contained information in oracle and SQL DBs, and BW wasn't very good at loading the data in schedules.Other Solutions Considered:Nope, because of its connectivity to BW it was choosenDisclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Development enviorment setup was straightforward, production was more complex. Valuable Features:Data Quality and ETL. The product has fantastic data quality options and matching/consolidation features. The ETL is very powerful and easy to use.Improvements to My Organization:We were able to increase data quality on the back-end. We didn't have great front-end capture. We are also able to add additional data sources very easily.Room for Improvement:Error logging is very cryptic. Embedded Data flows are only customizable on either input or output, not both.Use of Solution:5 YearsDeployment Issues:NoStability Issues:Sometimes with complex data flows. But generally a stable product.Scalability Issues:No. We had a very good admin. Scalability requires a lot of product knowledge.Customer Service:Same as most large companies. Ok.Technical Support:Ok. We had the benefit of a Platinum consultant on the project so he was able to escalate issues easily.Initial Setup:Wasn't personally involved, but was straightforward for the development environment. Production was more complex.Implementation Team:In-house. We had an expert.ROI:Don't remember exact ROI, but saved many hours in development and maintenance by using the tool.Other Solutions Considered:Informatica. Wasn't as easy to use as Data Services and the data quality was not as robust.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Doing De-Deduplication of data for Data Cleansing is much easier, but it needs a web client. Valuable Features:Data Quality Transforms, Data Cleanse, Platform, Match.Improvements to My Organization:Doing De-Deduplication of data for Data Cleansing is much easier and has been revolutionised with Data Services. Especially used in conjunction with SAP Information Stewards.Room for Improvement:It needs a Web-client.Use of Solution:2 years.Deployment Issues:Sometimes when re-installing the product, the program corrupts and needs to be completely removed. Its wastes a lot of time.Stability Issues:NoneScalability Issues:Sometimes when upgrading the product, the program corrupts and needs to be completely removed. Its wastes a lot of time.Customer Service:It could be better.Technical Support:Could also be better. There are still a few niggles that need to be sorted out and it seems that SAP are a bit slow on the comeback.Previous Solutions:SSIS. I switched because a) my current company specialises in Data Services and b) because DS is the best tool for working with SAP ERP and SAP Hana.Initial Setup:Straight forward.Implementation Team:In-house.Other Solutions Considered:SSIS only.Other Advice:Prepare well, read the installation guide and make sure you have all the boxes ticked before going ahead and installing.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The initial setup was straightforward and complex projects are in the pipeline. Use of Solution:I am Microstrategy BI developer with 6 years experience and with 1 year experience on SAP Data Services.Technical Support:Out of 5, I would give SAP Data Services technical support a 4.5. The technical support from SAP was quick and technically very clear. The way the issues are being reviewed and the response we receive are great.Previous Solutions:The first ETL tool being implemented is SAP Data Services and it was implemented during 2008.Implementation Team:The product was implemented by a third party consulting company. The implementation was good from a technical perspective, but there were few flaws in the business logic which the third party consulting team should have gained from the in-house business analysts.Other Solutions Considered:Since I recently joined a year ago, I am not sure whether any other tool was evaluated along with this ETL tool.Other Advice:I would advise implementing SAP Data services using a Unix platform rather than a windows platform.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.
