The Dell Timbuk2 Breakout is a unique '3 in 1' messenger case that can be worn messenger style, carried like a briefcase, or like a backpack. It has a wide, messenger strap that fits comfortably over the shoulder with any heavy load but is easily detached and stowed away when carrying it briefcase-style. Backpack straps are tucked away neatly and can be attached when you need to use both arms to carry your load. It is suitable for laptops with up to 17-inch screen sizes and offers a top load design.

So Much Space, So Few Pockets
Good construction, but too back the main inner compartment has only 2 zippered compartments. All my other bags have a half-dozen pockets and pouches in the inner compartment for the multitude of things besides the laptop that have to go in the bag. In this one, they all just get tossed to the bottom of the bag because there are so few pockets to put them into.

Need to lug a 17" laptop? Then this IS your case!
I like this briefcase in every regard with one exception. First, I love how well it fits my 17.6" laptop, and the short handle lets you control the case well. The backpack straps hide away if you use the shoulder strap (like I do. My only "less than perfect" criticism is the main cavity is too blank. Hardly anything to secure items. It becomes one large mess of things inside. I sewed on Velcro straps and pockets to convert this into the absolutely perfect case. I'll use this every day. If 4.5 stars were a rating choice, I would give that.

Great "Personal Item" to go with carry-on bag for flight
I was pleasantly surprised with how much I like to take this with me when flying. My XPS 15 fits in the laptop compartment, even if I have it in the Dell premium sleeve for extra protection. When moving around the airport I like to have it in backpack mode so I can easily lift my carry-on rollerbag up and down stairs and such, however once I am waiting at the gate the bag slides right onto the rollerbag so I can let my shoulders relax. On the airplane, it fits in normal vertical briefcase orientation under the seat in front of me (squish the top down just a bit, leaving room for my feet on either side so I can stretch my legs out. The main compartment is an ideal size to hold electronics organizers that I purchased separately - which I prefer over having a bag that has all kinds of pockets built-in. My only complaints are that the main compartment doesn't open all the way (probably to prevent accidental opening when the bag is in backpack mode), and there isn't a key clip. Also note that it is not a very deep bag, which is ideal for fitting between my feet on the airplane as mentioned, but means that it doesn't hold as much as you might expect given how large it appears in the other dimensions.

Timbuk2PremiumMessenger bag used with a Dell M6400
I use the Timbuk2 Premium Messenger bag with my Dell M6400 Precision workstation for commuting to work, travel & on customer visits. The bag is well made from quality materials & the reinforced stitching at the seam is first rate. The bag has enough space to carry my laptop in a Timbuk2 laptop sleeve, my portfolio, the giant power supply, a notebook mouse, a 3D motion controller (3D mouse) & 4 other miscellaneous cables. The bag is comfortable to wear thanks to the well padded shoulder strap & the bag does not move or slide off my back.

Nice laptop bag even for a 17” laptop
Great product and versatile. I would give it five stars if the back pack straps came off. When you use it as a messenger bag the backpack straps are still there attached which is kind of annoying. if you use it as a mini laptop backpack instead of a messenger bag it’s fantastic

BEST CASE I'VE EVER SEEN
The bag may be carried as a briefcase, as a shoulder bag, and as a backpack. It is well padded to protect the laptop, and it has enough room for chill mat, cords, portable scanner and other accessories. It is very well constructed, and well worth the price.

Versatile, durable backpack/messenger bag
My messenger bag had recently started causing my shoulder to hurt. I purchased the Timbuk2 breakout so that I could use it as a back pack. It helped a great deal with my shoulder pain. It has enough compartments for my laptop, accessories and papers. The only part that I do not like is that the backpack shoulder straps cannot be tucked away when using it as a messenger bag. Overall I like it and would purchase it again.

Overall, a good utility bag. Missing a feature or two that keeps it from being a 5 star.
Overall, a good utility bag. It is extremely roomy and big enough for my 17" inch laptop, iPad, and other stuff. The sleeve to put over a carry-on is great and it goes over carry-on handles easily (unlike my previous bag that was a challenge to put on and pull off my carry-on. I love that you can carry like a brief case or like a backpack, but it is missing a feature or two. The issue is there isn't a secure way to lock down contents so when you switch from briefcase to backpack orientation everything is flying around. There are some pockets but not enough and many are closed with snaps - so if you put stuff in those pockets they can and have fallen out. More zipper closures would help to stop things from moving around. Finally, a little pocket to secure a water bottle would be ideal. I am always concerned that after I change orientation my water bottle will get squished and the contents go all over everything.

Purfect Fit
My Timbuk2 and 17" laptop work together extremely well. I had to think outside the box when I got this, since I'd had a Targus for oh soo long. I discovered, there are enough and various pockets to contain all the stuff I could imagine for carrying my laptop anywhere, and not as a heavier piece of luggage. It's a perfect combination for my laptop and various accessories, and light enough for my aging shoulders. I couldn't be happier.

Nice Bag, room for improvement
Needed a bag to carry a 17" laptop and I like the messenger style best. The pockets are not as well configured as my old Targus brand messenger bag, however, this bag does work very well for carrying the 17" laptop. The one clasp on the messenger strap pops open frequently and could have been designed better.

Worth the upgrade price over a standard $25-$35 laptop bag
I have used a Timbuk2 messenger bag for 15 years and the only reason I needed a new bag was because my Precision 7760 17" laptop is too big for it. This bag appears to be of similar quality and materials to my old bag. It has room for my tablet style portable monitor, mouse, cables, and notebooks with plenty room left over for fielding equipment like a compass, gps, calculator, and support reports. The shoulder straps for the backpack function are thin enough to be compact, but strong enough to hold the bag securely to the rack on my commuter bicycle. It is not waterproof but seems to shrug of light rain on the occasion it happens during a ride.

Nice bag
Nice bag seems like it should hold up good. The zipper on the one compartment I found a bit odd, to me it seemed like it should unzip further. My guess is due to this being a convertible bag they were concerned about it opening too far. Also I was expecting a bit more space, overall though I'm pleased with the purchase.

Quality Versatilty Cost
The Dell Timbuk2 Breakout. Is a very versatile unit. It's light enough to carry as a brief case or a back pack. Large enough to hold a 17 inch laptop and all the possible accessories you could need to travel with including charging cords, mouse, papers, etc... and even a travel printer. Yet the strong exterior is enough to protect you laptop from all the opps problems you can have at school, the airport, or just back and forth to work. The Dell Timbuk2 is the must have for someone who needs versatility and wants quality at a pretty decent price point. I personally have seen way more expensive brands the are cheaply made. This is great quality and feels like you should have paid more for it.

Computer bag almost ready for prime time.
This is a pretty decent computer case but it could use some more pockets for pens, highlighters and business cards; a snap hook for my keys; and padding inside both large compartments. I put my 15” XPS laptop in the large padded section and it fit as expected. Then, when I dropped my iPad into the other section - bang! It smacked the table under the bag and kind of surprised me. For the price of this bag I would expect that these issues would have been addressed. The carrying options are great and the case looks good enough to take to the office - once we get to go back.

Read other rewiews before buying
I didn't know what to expect. But I knew I needed something to carry my XPS 17 9700, the first laptop I ever owned. It's been 7 weeks. I took it for a 1 hr ride on my bike. As a backpack, I found it confortable, but then again, the laptop weighs almost 5 lbs. Then, I took the bus with it, as a messenger bag. !½ hrs each way. To my surprise, I'm liking this thing. I can tuck the back straps into their designated slots, I can learn to hate the handle because of the messenger sling. I got a school type pencil/pen bag at the Dollar Store. Solves the loose accessories issues that I've read about. Bottm line, I very much like this bag.

Very flexible carry options
I used it on a recent series of flights and used all 3 carrying options. All my previous laptop bags have had a Handel and shoulder strap only. I didn’t think I would use the backpack straps. On this trip I had my normal luggage and a ski bag with a pair of skis for my daughter. When I landed I used the backpack feature leaving two hands free for the luggage an long ski bag. I worked out particularly getting on and off the shuttle buses.
The only reason I didn’t rate the bag 5 stars is the padding on the bottom of the bag is very thin. I felt I needed to add padding underneath the the computer for my peace of mind. I wish it had the padding level as the side of the bag

My old one lasted 10 years. It's a great bag.
I've had this bag for a decade and now that I needed a replacement, I was ecstatic that it was still for sale.( Though I'll admit it took forever to find where to buy this particular bag again! Bookmark added.) It's perfect for travel, it's about the only bag that fits my laptop, and the ability for it to fit over the handles of a wheelie airplane carry-on/cabin bag makes it completely worth-while for me. Can not recommend enough.
It's as though the people who use this bag designed it because the front pocket fits a passport and a phone perfectly, the padded inside pocket is perfect for my laptop (and I'm not the most gentle person with said laptop as I should be). There's plenty of pockets inside the secondary compartment which is great for separating out power cords, a mouse, or if this is your travel bag ( which I frequently use it as) it's prefect for packing clothes and separating them out.
Overall, 10/10.
