HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdn - color is rated 3.40 out of 5 by 120.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely poor functionality! We purchased this for our growing office hoping it would be more efficient than our previous HP model. It has proved to be opposite! We immediately had issues with scanning, it grabs multiple papers at once instead of singlely. We reported to HP. They sent somebody out and replaced a part just for it to continue the issue. Was told to "try to scan one paper at a time!" This was our entire reason for purchasing what we thought was an upgrade. Now, 2 months later, I am noticing it won't scan double sided, after I made ALL of our paperwork double sided to avoid the issue of scanning and grabbing multiple pages. This has been an entire disaster, so much time and money wasted, multiple calls for support, nothing has been resolved. I do not recommend this product to anybody!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HP LASER JET PRO MFP MA79fdn We are doing less printing and more scanning. It is not the easiest machine to scan, we like to use the Subject and the File name the same and this machine will not let us copy and paste the subject line to the file name.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from beware, this model is not wifi If you want the wifi version, you need to order this model with a "w" on the end of the model number, not the "n." I re-ordered the MFP M479fdw (which is identical to this unit in size and functionality) and was very pleased with the machine. Smaller profile than the Canon unit I had previously. Relatively quiet. Prints quickly. Defaults to double sided printing which I like. Every user was able to install it on their computers. Please note that my Mac is 64 bit and upon installing the printer to my printer list, I had an error code that said "cnbmzd is not optimized for your Mac and needs to be updated." This may mean the HP software is still 32 bit so check that out. Another user with a pc had to update her operating system to the current version in order to install this printer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid, quality device Bought this for one of our directors who now has to work from home. It prints a decent quality at 600x600, it will copy, scan, print, etc with ease. My only regret is not checking the specs closely to see if it supports wireless, which it did not. But in the end the cost of wireless on a printer is not worth it, plus its completely unsecure and most CISO types will say never ever install wireless on a printer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Install information is not the best. It took me 3 or 4 days to install this computer. Directions are very wanting for correct information. For example the instructions say it is recommended you use the cord that comes with the printer. WRONG ! Couldn’t print, couldn’t do anything. Grrrr. Also the instructions stated to hook the plug into the back of the printer port. There is none, only to connect to your internet. This is supposed to be an all in one and no fax port! Why. I am really not happy at all. I tried but need to configure the fax yet. Not looking forward to it. Probably doesn’t have correct instructions for that either. I have been a long time customer of HP. I have always written a very good review. I may have to switch companies.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good copy quality and good reliability This is a good solid printer and scanner. My particular model does not have WiFi. This is my fault for overlooking it. I just never dreamed that a printer today would not have a WiFi interface! The cost of toner is high, but the quality is good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprised Purchased to replace existing LaserJet 475dn. Other than some minor issues with device recognition and an occasional lockup which is cured by turning off and on, it is far superior to the 475. Slightly faster, more features, reduced usage of toner cartridges, noise reduction, and greater communication which printer. I also added the 550 sheet tray which was seamless in installation. Other than the minor software issues, I rate this at 95%

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Horrible Experience The instructions to hook up the printer were totally incomplete and misleading. After attempting to hook it up and being unsuccessful, I called HP SmartFriend Support. I spoke to two people and was on the phone with them for four hours, yes four hours! And even then, the issue was not resolved. HP is calling me back today to resume trying to resolve the issues. This morning I am a nervous wreck and migraines have been brought on. I had a bad experience with another HP printer previously. I'm done with HP. I've never, ever seen anything like these problems I've had. I will say the technicians helping me were very patient, friendly, and knowledgeable in assisting me. Bravo to them! What an awful experience with HP.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love that I can print from my phone!!! I bought this printer for my 2 small business and it has been great!!! However; I printed out colored address labels and they faded and smeared easily. I bought a name band label not the off brand hoping that that would help the quality. So I am not sure to blame the label or the printer for this happening. Other than that my only hope is that my ink last a full year and does not dry out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty much what I expected Overall I'm happy with my purchase. Set up wasn't as difficult as other reviews make it seem. That said, I am probably more tech savvy than most. A couple of minor disappointments: 1) You can't scan to a Mac from the printer's control panel, only from the computer itself (our old scanner had the same issue - must be some weird Apple networking thing). 2) Doesn't have intelligent two sided scanning where it skips blank pages

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works flawlessly! My older LaserJet decided to head south now that I'm working from home due to the COVID pandemic. So, I decided to move away from the inkjets as the print heads on those only go for about a year before they start having print quality issues. I purchased the LaserJet Pro M479fdn since I got a great deal from my employee program and I couldn't be happier with the typical great HP quality. I figure the LaserJet toner will end up costing me less over the long run compared to the cost of ink cartridges for my old inkjet given the duty cycle on the LaserJet. Great customer service made the deal even sweeter. Thanks to HP for the speedy delivery which was a life saver!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well built printer with a lot of features I purchased this printer for my wife who got tired of inkjet prints that smears when encountering a little water (living in Washington means that happens). I misread the specs and thought I was getting a wireless printer. That was my fault and not the fault of the printer, but something to note because there are so many things that imply it is wireless (like you can print directly from an wireless device like a phone or a tablet). The way the printer does this is it communicates via a service to get the print jobs which are put up on the service by your table/phone. This works, and works well. The set up was pretty simple, unbox, remove some tap, connect the power, net cable, and phone (for fax functionality), then set up the drivers with the set up program. I found one issue with my set up and the printer, I also have an Epson printer on the net (a wireless one) that has a scanner. The drivers were not happy together and it made some of the software not see the scanner of the new machine. HP has a utility that helps fix issues with some stuff, but it got stuck when it got to the WIA section. This is how I figured out it had to do with the Epson. I uninstalled the epson driver, ran the HP installation and fixer again, and then it worked. Later I reinstalled the Epson, and I can use the epson scanner with its software and the HP with its software and any WIA now goes the the HP (which is a better scanner). Over all I really like the quality of the printer. Printed colors look great. The speed is good. The connectivity works as advertised. Set up was not to tough. The machine has a lot of features that are good for a small to medium sized business (like LDAP and user profile).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly What I've Been Looking For I just hooked it up so it could be a 5 star ... I'll know more over time. It is heavier than I thought (51 lbs), but I installed it very quickly with no problems. I love that it is color and black and white. I used to have two printers: laser black and white with all the features needed in an office, and a simple color cartridge printer. Now, I printer does it all, it takes up less space, and I can move between color and black and white by simple selection. I like that it was on sale too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worst customer service experience ever No WiFi. This is the first time i've ever bought thr wrong type of product by mistake. I wanted to buy a WiFi all-in-one printer and the description was not clear that it must be plugged into a network (cannot coonect over wifi). For some reason, HP expects you to know that the "n" in fdn means "network" and you need the fdw printer. To replace it, you have to call customer service (cannot do online).... After 3 numbers, I got hold of the right number.... was on hold for 2 hours and then call hung up. I am still trying to replace this printer Worst experience I've ever had.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from null Like all HP printers it is made very well and should last for a long time. However, when I read the description I purchased based on two final items: duplex printing and wireless network. Although the description I read said it had these features and since the model number includes "dn" (which used to stand for Duplex and Networking) I believed I was getting exactly what i was looking for. I am now forced to but an addition print server so my family can connect wirelessly and the only duplex I find is when I select duplex it print then tells me to reinsert my print job so it can print the other pages. THAT IS NOT DUPLEX. I have been buying HP printers for decades, I do not know about the future.

I was able to configure it without any problems - configured the WIFI and FAX quickly and easily. Connected my laptop - downloaded the drivers and I can print to it from anywhere in my home. I also downloaded the HP app to my iPhone and iPad without any difficulties - printing, copying, sending/receiving faxes is fast and the color is wonderful!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Color LaserJet MFP! This is a great printer/scanner for a small office. Purchased this for the scanner functionality of double sided scanning in a single pass. We've been using this for a week and it works great so far and love the small footprint. Printing has been smooth, great quality and duplexing works well. Ordered the large capacity tray (worth it). Label and envelope printing works well too! We mostly print usual office items: documents/presentations, labels and envelopes. Nothing requiring high resolution/graphic level output. Some things to note: Scanning - slightly slower pick up speed than our B&W HP MFP, but that isn't critical. The lower receiving tray for ADF could be a little bigger (as larger, multiple page documents fly off the end). I really like being able to program Quick sets for those frequently used scan settings! However, I think 8.5 x 14 should be a standard scanning size without having to program a Quick Set to do this. Would also like to be able to customize the display page, so we could orient more frequently used apps toward the beginning. (Especially since the display screen is small and icons are a tad large. Good for seeing/but they don't all fit at one time on the display area.) Haven't set up the fax portion yet, so I can't comment on that. Even with the small inconveniences, for the price, this MFP is very worthy and can't be beat! Durability will only come with time. Our other HP Color LaserJet (printer only) lasted 15 years...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Needs to be close to router for ethernet cable Bought this printer seeing that it had wifi connections. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast! Excellent features and results This replaces an OfficeJet Pro Multifunction printer that I have had for years. It was getting old, requiring a lot of maintenance, print head replacements, etc. It had given me years of great service but it was time to stop spending so much time and money on it. I am so glad I chose this printer. It does everything the old printer did (print, copy, scan, fax). Of course, it is a laser printer instead of an inkjet. The quality of the prints are fine, probably better but that is not what I was looking for. I don't print photos or anything of importance. I mostly just print forms and such. One thing it doesn't support that the old one did is wireless. There is a wireless version of this printer available, but it doesn't support wired (Ethernet). My old OfficeJet supported both. I don't know why this model makes you choose, but wired was the better choice for me. Of course, I can still print from wireless devices, such as my phone or tablet, so the only thing that having both wired and wireless would have given me is some flexibility in location, but since my printer and router are in the same room and wired is much faster than wireless, it's just not a big deal. Plus the wired version was on sale! It also doesn't have the slots for SD cards, which I NEVER used. Lastly, like everything else these days, I think the old printer was a bit more sturdily built. The pluses, though, are significant. The speed difference...WOW!!! On the inkjet, I would, say, send a document from my phone in a room in the opposite end of the house. I could go into the kitchen, pop in a Keurig cup, brew it, then go to the printer, and MAYBE the document had started printing. With this printer, before I get to the kitchen the document has not only started, it has finished, even if it is 10 pages. Both printers support two-sided printing, but this printing has a setting to make it automatic, so you don't have to go into the settings of your apps. TIP:I found out that this feature is OFF by default, so you must go into the printer's control panel and turn it on. Speaking of the control panel, the differences are like the differences between a color and black and white TV. MUCH better interface and much larger screen. I think I'm going to like this baby!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sorry I bought it. I loved my old HP Laser Jet Pro 375. The "live chat person" told me that the M479fdn was the upgrade to mine so I bought it because I needed it to do the same thing as my old one. UGH! NOT! It came with a broken magenta toner cartridge, when we took it out it dumped toner all over the inside of the printer. I bought it from Staples so I called Staples to ask what could be done they told me I could get a $15 coupon toward a new cartridge. I said that is ALL? They put me on hold for a couple of minutes and then told me I could get a $30 coupon OR I could box the printer up and take it to a store for replacement. My old printer printed really fast...the new one not so much. It is horribly slow...so slow that sometimes I've forgotten that I'm printing something. How can an upgrade go backwards in technology?!?! And it curls the pages on both ends that they don’t lay flat after printing. I had gotten used to the noises that my old printer made when it would "calibrate or initialize." This one makes noises ALL the time. I've had it now for 2 days, not sure I'm going to keep it. VERY DISSATISFIED!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so good Am marginally happy with this product. However, the sales person stated this unit would work with Windows XP (no drivers available) and was a wireless unit. It is not!!! It is ethernet capable only. There was no software CD accompanying this product and I was told the drivers would downloadable from the HP website (they were not there)!!! I had to contact tech support to download drivers. Also, was shocked at price of toner cartridges. So far, I haven;t been able to get the fax to function (said I had a weak signal on phone line yet my inkjet printer had no problems faxing. This seems very odd considering my phone line is fiber optic cable and I am running on DSL.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy Connection I have had a rough patch with HP almost lost faith in HP and their products after the 9020 series specifically the faxing sporadically. I returned the 9010 and the 9025 was a hit and miss, only the faxing was the issue. Case manager recommended this product as an alternative. It connected quickly, printing is great quality. I have some concerns with screen sometimes I have to press a couple of times but it works, probably because of the size. What is most important to me is the fax works and it has nice print quality. No more two hour calls with reps saying the same things. Thank you HP for resolving my issues it took a while but I am again a satisfied customer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great printer This is a very good/great printer. Not too hard to set up. Would have gotten 5 stars, but two things kept the rating from the top. First it, is not clear in the set-up instructions that for the fax receive function requires an unbroken, one piece cord from the jack to the printer, to work. The supplied fax cord (10 ft) was too short. Had to get a long enough cord from an outside vendor. HP could consider selling fax cords in various lengths. Second issue, had to do the software installation over fro scratch. Slightly annoying. Having said that, HP tech support is outstanding!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great printing and "just works" on all 3 OSs I bought this printer recently after an old inkjet died. Since I print infrequently, a laserjet makes more sense for me. Overall I'm happy with the printing and scanning, but there is a little room for improvement. Pros: - Crisp, clear printouts - Printer detected and "just works" on Linux, MacOS, Windows 10 and Ubuntu Linux - Touch screen menus are easy to navigate - Scanning is very quick Cons: - There's such a large power draw, when I turn it on or it cycles toner, the lights dim in my home office. No other printer has done this. - Documents scanned through the automatic feeder are sometimes a little crooked

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cheap construction; Features Don’t Work I bought this MFP 2 weeks ago. Poor quality control, unreliable FAX, flimsy paper drawer, and total fail power management functions. Features not working speaks volumes to poor quality control. FAX is very problematic working on one occasion and not the next. Power Management DOES NOT WORK EVER! No matter what sleep mode I select (1 min, 5 min, et al) MFP NEVER enters sleep mode; display and noise remain constant. Same with power shut down mode: no matter what elapsed time interval is selected of printer not in use, it never powers down. Huge disappointment; don’t recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice but please bring back the cancel print job X The printer is nice, but I rated down for 2 things. Wish it wasn't white we have a dirty job, and 2 because finding the cancel print job was difficult to find. I wasted 40 sheets of paper trying to cancel something I printed in error. Our old one had a cancel right on the control panel

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Printer! Great Printer! It was easy for me to set up straight out of the box, all I needed to do was download the drivers. Copying and printing was super quick and easy. The touch screen is easy to use and I also like that it can hold a nice amount of paper in the paper drawer. It printed my documents and a few pictures quick and easy with no problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very powerful and practical machine! I had to opportunity to try out the HP Color LaserJet Pro for my small home office. Right out the box I saw this was not a regular old printer. Getting the machine set up took some concentration and the help of my tech savvy neighbor.  After some reading and tweaking we were able to get it up and running. Initially I planned on using this to print small art for custom orders and everyday office use. It took me a little while to get used to the settings and just printing a simple invoice. But after about 2 weeks I feel very comfortable using this for all my office needs, the kids use it for reports and homework. I really like that I can scan documents to my email, canva and laptop with ease. The artwork printed on this machine is top quality, the images are vivid and captures depth and the smallest of details. So far I am very pleased with the work I am able to accomplish on this machine. I look forward to learning and getting more familiar with the other functions I haven't tried yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Convenience on finger tips This HP color laser printer is amazing, i was looking for a printer that do everything like Print, Copy, Scan, Fax, and Email and so happy i found this one. This is the best printer i have ever own, i love it so much because it makes my life easier. This multifunction printer has a very nice unique design and can do auto duplex printing, scan to email, and has two paper trays (standard). I like it a lot because i can easily scan files directly to Microsoft, SharePoint , email, USB, and network folders it helps save time by automating all the steps in a complicated workflow. It prints effortlessly from all devices virtually with network and has an enabled dynamic security feature. This printer is good for any work flow setting or personal work. Highly recommended

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality! It took me a bit of time to use this printer properly because I didn’t have a long enough Ethernet cable. Once I got to use it I experience great quality prints, color and b/w. Scanner, copier, feeder for copying or scanning worked great. I haven’t had a chance to use the fax part yet. Extremely easy to just plug in and use. Touch screen has the perfect sensitivity and is simple to navigate. Uploading the driver for my iMac was easy and simple. I am going to continue to use it and judge/experience it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for my at home business! I work from home and run a small business which requires me to print a lot of stuff off, scan in reports, etc and this printer is AMAZING. It does everything I need it to and more! It’s very easy to use, very easy to hook up to the computer, and overall is user friendly. The size was a bit of a challenge to find a space for but I figured out a solution very easily!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buggy and difficult to use This was a very highly rated all-in-one, but I have had nothing but issues with it from day 1. First issue - I thought this was meant to support printing photos, but apparently you need "laser jet" photo paper, which you can seemingly get in Letter size but not 4x6? I saw some people had success with inkjet 4x6 paper, but this did not work with this printer. But the big one is so many of the functions don't work. Set up scan to email, worked for the first day, then just stopped. No idea why. It seems to have a lot of issues with outbound network connectivity, while inbound is fine (can still initiate printing and scanning from all my computers). Which leads to the most frustrating issue - Scan to Computer just randomly working or not working. Half the time it just doesn't work. Tried to set up scan to Network Drive instead, but could not get it to connect to any of my specially set up network folders for it. Worked fine from other computers. Googled for a long time, lots of other people having the same issue. Completely stumped. The error messages are completely useless too, and googling for info rarely brings any help. The printer announced that Scan to Computer had been disabled and could not be re-enabled. Why? No idea. I eventually did find a forum post saying remove PART of the HP software and it will work, and after much mucking around, this did seem to fix it. Why? Who knows! Although then I just tried to scan something and it's no longer working again. The actual printing side seems good. But jeeze, what a mess. My old Canon all-in-one worked for many years without a hitch while this has been a nightmare from the beginning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Poor design Ok we got two of these brand new, First issue crops up within a month ADF scans are crooked and would often pull multiple page during scan, had tech come out twice to fix, first time he said to get heavier paper (no available here) second time we verified that both devices scan crooked and his final parting word - Buy a more expensive printer, Hp quality has gone downhill a lot

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not recommended We bought two of these printers for our office. I would not recommend this printer for everyday office use. First of all, the construction of the device is extremely fragile. For instance, the paper tray is flimsy and needs to be opened carefully as to not break any of the components. After you fill the paper tray, the copier asks you several times to check the paper level. When printing, the delay is completely ridiculous. From computer to printer, wait times take up to 30 seconds for printing. There is no notification when toner is getting low. So, if you are out of toner, you will just wait for it to print and then receive an error message on your screen that printing failed. No reason why it failed. When scanning more than one sheet of paper, you need to gently tap the papers in the feeder so that the device recognizes there is more than one sheet of paper. And, it almost ALWAYS scans documents crooked. This printer was a waste of money.

The sales person on the phone did not pay attention to what I was asking for and discussed thoroughly which was having the Wi-Fi capability. The printer that I wanted was unavailable and this was supposed to be the replacement for it. But when they entered the order they didn’t add the model number with a W for Wi-Fi. I spent an hour and a half trying to figure out why I could not set up the wireless or find the menu option on the printer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Advertising for this product is deceiving. I had no information that explained what the final 3 letters of the product ID meant. I was looking for a color Laser all in one printer to wirelessly connect to my home network. Only after attempting to integrate the product did I realize that it was NOY wireless. I had disposed of the packaging and now had to wait a week for a wireless model to arrive to secure packaging to return the original u it which was never used. I am awaiting authorization for the return which was promised to arrive in "one or two days". Crazy customer service on top of poorly described product capability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much too slow Although a nice printer, it can be painfully slow. It takes 8 - 9 seconds to print the first page. I have not found the trend, but some documents print fine, while others will print two pages, pause for 8 - 9 seconds and then continue printing. Like many MFPs in this small category, the size of the PDF file generated from scanning is large when compared to a more expensive, high volume MFP.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good printer- however time-consuming setup. Very quiet, quick and excellent quality. However it is mean to automatically do 2-sided copying- this means the user does not need to take the paper from the feeder and re-insert it in the paper tray. My IT specialist was not able to get this to work automatically and I spent an hour and a half on the phone with HP support to get this problem resolved. This should not be the case- that software and that modification should be loaded by default since the copier is sold with this feature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've had better HP has evolved over the years, and I no longer find them the value I used to. They used to have spectacular print quality. I have a 15 year old color LaserJet that does better than this. I switched because the mirrors got dirty causing the print to look faded and I needed an all-in-one to replace my inkjet and reduce the footprint on my desk. For the price I expect more. Getting this hooked up was a pain. The terminology in the description led me to believe this printer was wireless. Getting a direct Lan cable to the printer has been impossible due to the house design. I ran a temporary cable to the printer, and everything hooked up fine though you have to go find which software you want to install (I remember the good days when it came with a CD), Now the problem ... One day I was in a hurry to print a document and didn't want to run the temporary cable through the house, so I decided to quickly install the USB driver. It looked correct. The printer properly detected the printer and the accessories, but no matter what I tried, the printer would only install the monochrome driver and I really needed to print a color document. While trying to fix it a tragedy of events took place and I ended up rebuilding my computer. I never had this much trouble getting a printer to work. HP has complicated things too much and has started relying on generic print drivers instead of developing their own and it shows in the quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Think twice before purchasing. Extremely disappointed. I use this for printing, copying, scanning and fax for a business. No complaints with fax. I print documents from files and on more than one occasion, it will read error and all printing stops. I then have to go back through the documents printed from the file and figure out where it stopped. Time consuming. For scanning, I can only scan one document individually and will have many to scan separately. Maybe it's a user problem and I need help. Also, in scanning files it will be scanning the pages and then I received error message and everything scanned is lost and I have to start over. This is very time consuming and I do not have the time to redo the work over and over. I had a previous HP printer/scanner and it was wonderful and never had any complaints. I shouldn't have upgraded.
