We bought M479fdw to replace my old M477fdw and hoping that this last as long and work without any issues. So far so good (seems bit cheaper with material and display) and have not seen 3-yr. care pack registered under my account with which we bought with above printer.

Easy set up, excellent for small office
I purchased this for a small office. Love that it had two seperate paper trays so I no longer had to switch out paper. The set up was very simple for everyone in the office. Printing, copies and scans all are great quality.

Great Printer. Poor Setup. Expensive Toner
As other have mentioned this printer's setup is way too much for this day and age. I am very technical. HP needs to revamp the installation software. Runs through continuous loops. Scan to printer is hard to get working. Once setup works great.
Worst of all the toner is out of this world expensive. HP charges $800 for all 4 cartridges. You can get 3rd party on Amazon for $140 a set that work great. Come on HP. Really? A set of cartridges as much as the printer itself. At most should be 25% of the cost of the printer and even then you would be paying for another printer after 4 replacements.

A Solid and Well-Designed MFP
We had three machines. We had one for scanning, one for making copies and another to do our general printing. Our new MFP replaces them all. This is a solidly built unit and has a high quality feel and appearance. It was easy to set-up. The unit operates quietly and quickly. I was very impressed by how fast it is. Buying directly through HP was also a great experience. The salesperson was friendly and knowledgeable. She made sure this new MFP would be compatible with our older Apple OS. We got a great price due to the sale. Shipping was also free through UPS. We had it in only four days.

Scan to computer feature is not available in mac.
Just brought this printer today and got it set up. few things really caught my attention.
1. The set up doesn't have auto detective. For example, setting up fax. it will ask you do you use modern, voice phone, distinctive tone, or DSL or dail up, etc... while other company do auto setup. It will be very difficult for people who doesn't have knowledge on fax.
2. This printer doesn't support scan to computer on mac, which will cause user have to scan it manually from the computer. It is time consuming and back and force from computer to printer. But this function is available on windows, I don't understand why they do that. It is not they don't have the technology, they have this technology on other printers. I have HP inject 8610 printer which I can scan to my computer (mac). This really bring this high end printer to the bottom. I am thinking about returning it.

I’m very happy with this printer! I’ve been using it for my home office for two months now and it has worked seamlessly. Setup was simple and took around 25 minutes. Fast user friendly touchscreen Is great. Great performance while printing and scanning. Handles 2 sided scanning like a champ. My only gripe is with the cooling fan. The fan can run a little loud, but it’s easily fixed by putting the printer on sleep mode. Overall A++ printer!

Routine printing, but not on thick paper.
This is a polite suggestion to any user of a laser printer. Be skeptical of the alleged abilities to duplex print, or print on thicker paper such as post cards or glossy paper. Any belt (roller) driven printer will jam! I owned the HP Pro 500: I was forced to literally take it apart many times to retrieve jammed paper, and manually clean the belt and roller. So I switched to the Dell C3765, but I was naive to believe that I could print on glossy paper, and of course, it jammed. Now, operating the HP Pro 479, I will NEVER risk doing anything more than routine printing.

Fast printing, more than enough for college!
I am both a college student and a Real Estate agent on the side. I have to constantly print out unique sizes of paper, such as notecards, envelopes, A4, and legal. This printer allows me to do both at a moment's notice, and the print quality has set apart my resumes. I would recommend this over an ink printer and the value for both the printer and toner is very convenient.

Great Printing
Bought the printer a few weeks ago. The printer has nice crisp printing to including printing pictures. However, if you connect your phone through the printer it will come out of sleep mode every time you pick up the phone to make a call.

Easy setup, great printing upgrade
We were having issues with our inkjet printer and found this on a HP Black Friday sale. It arrived from HP in three days. NB - it weighs about 50 pounds. It was easy to unpack snd set up -- remove some red packing tape, insert paper, and plug it in. After that the LED control panel leads through the tests of the set up.

WORSE PRINTER EVER!!!
Scan to email does NOT work. I get an error once I setup the email settings, "Error. Test failed due to a printer error. Try again after sometime." What does "Try again after sometime" mean???!!! I've tried for 2 weeks now, still not able to scan to email. It took a few days to figure out why it wasn't scanning at all. Why does a MFP not scan or scan to email??? What's the point?

What I Needed
I purchased this, based on the fact I used this product at work. There, as now, it was flexible to use (WiFi, Internet, Direct Connect, etc.), enabling computers on my home system and the portable laptops to print with easy. Also, the quality of the printing is excellent. And, don't forget, it copies and Fax, plus digitally scan to files, all with quality resolution.

Very fast Printing, was a little cumbersome setting up the Contact List as well as using it from the Screen. Due to constraints of our Network difficulties using the EWS. Still have yet to understand the Quickset and its Function. Scanning to Email not as easy as the 2320MFP, but still functional.

It wasn't exactly what I expected
Generally speaking, I am a pretty tech savvy person. I have had this printer for just over a week and still have not quite figured out how to set up the scanner properly, have had issues printing different types of papers without creating paper-jams and have been thoroughly disappointing by the paper trays. In order to use the second tray included the front of the printer has to remain open. I really like printing from both standard letter as well as statement size paper for a variety of reasons so I was hoping to have 2 trays, 1 with each paper, which the printer could simply switch between depending on which I chose when printing a document, it does NOT work that easily. It will do what I need it for but it def. is not living up to my expectations.

Wireless feature seems broken
After some time working with HP support on the phone and them looking at my computer, everything seemed fix but for scan and print but after sitting for a while the printer lost connections again. I have gone back to using USB and given up on the WIRELESS CONNECTION features

Just installed this week. I had concerns from hooking up printer/scanners in the past, but downloading the HP drivers was a snap. To my amazement the scanner even works! The printed docs come out crisp and clean. I do not have a landline so I cannot rate the FAX feature.

MFP M479fdw is the worst printer/scanner ever made
I have not found a computer that is compatible with this printer. After several days I was able to get the printer installed and working. The scanner still is unusable. There does not appear to be any way to make the scanner work correctly. None of the HP software provided or on the HP website works correctly.

A hint for easy set up
I've only had this wireless laser a little over a week but I'm very pleased with the ease of use so far. I couldn't get it set up properly the first couple days due to my poor internet service which has nothing to do with the laser printer. So my advice is be sure your internet connection is good BEFORE you attempt the online set up. Once that was corrected the initial printer set up on a Mac was a piece of cake.

Very nice printer
My old Color LaserJet broke after many years of service. With HP's 50th anniversary sale, this printer was less expensive that repair and toner for the old printer. It also has enough functionality that I could retire my multifunction inkjet. Installation was easy and everything works as expected.
I test printed a photo on some glossy laser paper and also on some glossy photo paper on my inkjet. The printout from the laser printer was OK, but not as good as the printout from the inkjet printer. I will keep the inkjet for occasional photo prints but use the new laser printer for other things.

Full featured MFP with a compact price
Have had the printer for less than a week, but setup was a snap after I followed the directions on the display. I would have preferred not to have had to download the massive software/driver bundle, but I read about others having difficulty with drivers/installation, so I just did the full setup. Most of the negative reviews I read prior to purchase were related to installation after that, many commented how expensive toner was. Toner replacements cost more than the printer. It will literally be cheaper to buy a new printer when toner is needed. Having used more expensive printers, I would prefer the display functions to be more robust. They are very limited in that you cannot control a lot from the display & you have to adjust settings from the software on your PC of which there are so many different applications, it is difficult to know where to go. At last count, I have 5 shortcuts on my desktop just for this printer's software and there are numerous redundancies & overlap. One strange issue is the system differentiates between scan to network folder vs scan to computer, but I see no capability to setup a network folder. Full setup puts this printer on the cloud which is a really useful feature, but if you change the printer's email address & permissions, it takes ~24 hours for the changes to take effect.

A great printer - maybe...
I bought the HP printer as a replacement for an older Okidata MFP printer. This printer has outstanding print quality both for text and pictures. And even though it is not listed as a photo printer, in a pinch I have printed a few and it provided very, very good results.
And, it is surprising how fast it delivers the first page and the following pages.

OK, that's all the good stuff. Now, for the 'not so good'... and HP is not going to like this assessment.
Toner cartridges are actually outrageously priced. The printer comes with 'starter cartridges' good for, I think, a few thousand prints. If they were to all run out at the same time, and you had to buy new ones from the HP site, you would spend upwards of $877.00 for high capacity cartridges. Granted the high capacity cartridges are good for 6,000 to 7,000 pages, but still, it would seem to be less expensive to buy a new printer and then scrap it when it needs cartridges. And at almost $900.00 for 6,000 prints, each page costs you close to $0.15. If you want 'Standard' cartridges, good for 2,100-2,400 pages, they will cost you $415.00. I don't know about you, but to me that's a LOT of money. And, like most laser printer toner cartridges, they have a 'chip' in them that counts the pages, etc. Except in the case of this printer (which may be common these days, I don't know) it must be a proprietary chip of some sort as the user guide says that if it detects a non-HP cartridge it won't print, or some words like that. As a result, at the time I write this (08/2019) there are NO compatible cartridges available.
So, in the end, I'm not sure how to give this printer a rating. As a printer, it's great, but as a purchase, I'm not so sure.

I bought this printer a few weeks ago to replace an older Hp laser printer that had stopped picking up paper from the tray. The cost to repair would of been close to $200 so it made sense to buy new. The printer started out working fine but after printing a few labels I started to get black streaks intermittently. I hope this is not a diffuser problem. I will be calling ho support today or tomorrow. The paper is correct and I ran all the checks.
The best thing about this printer so far is the easy set up. I downloaded the drivers turned on the printer used the printer display to connect to my WiFi and bam it connects. I can print from my iPhone easily as well.
I hope the black streaks is nothing serious. Maybe it’s just the black toner cartridge that came with the unit.

I purchased this multi-function printer for a home office. We previoulsy used an Epson inkjet multifunction which needed to be replaced. I wanted a color laser printer and ended up selecting the HP M479. I've been using it for a week and am very pleased so far. Set up was simple. For my iMac, I followed the instructions provided to set up through the HP website. I also connected it to a PC - even easier since the computer recognized the printer and set it up by itself. I've printed from three computers as well as my phone (all wirelessly - I have not used a hardwired connection) without any issues. The printer wakes up, prints the job, and goes back into standby a short while later. I have this located in a closet to keep it out of sight. Heat buildup isn't a problem when in standby and during printing of our relatively small print jobs. Haven't used the scanner other than to test it during installation - worked fine. Noise level is good - about as expected for a laser printer.

I bought this during the Stay-at-home because my Epson ink-jet multi-function was malfunctioning again. I got tired of buying printers every 2-3 years only to have them do something that makes them non-usable. So, I decided to spend the money on a bigger better machine that should last me the next 10 years with all the ink it holds. And color too! My family couldn't be happier that I bit the bullet and just did it! Yea me! So far so good and everyone at home can print from phone, tablet, laptop, and desktops. Still figuring out the chromebook but since that is schools, they may have some restrictions on what can be used. So far so good.
I was a bit disappointed that the price I got was supposed to be discounted through our teacher website, but then I saw same unit at office depot for the same price on sale as well. Not so much of an educator discount.

I was able to order the legal paper tray with it so we are able to print envelops, along with letter and legal sized paper. Each size has its on tray so it makes it very hassle free to print a variety of papers/envelop sizes.

I searched a long time for a printer with the features of the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw. All printers print; The hard to find "game changing" feature I was looking for was automatic 8 12" by 14" double-sided ADF scanning and 8 12" by 14" flat bed scanning. The former capability this printer has; the latter, it does not. It has an 8 12" by 11" flat bed scanning capability. Trying to find this out in the literature was impossible. This was the only shortfall, so I let it slide since I could get by 98% of the time with the ADF capability. . The other required printing capabilities were: laser, color, duplexing, and wireless .The faxing capability was not a requirement for me.

Bought this printer for our home use and so far we love it. Installation was easy and the printer is now connected to our network. Very easy to connect and print from any device in our house (computer, ipad, phones, etc.) Print quality is great and printing is fast. Scan and copy functions are also very helpful. Overall a great printer for us.

We ordered this printer on 3/20/2020. Like everyone, HP has been hamstrung by the national emergency. Staff have been courteous and professional, however, we still don't have a printer (one got within 30 miles of our office only to be sent back to Tennessee). So we are still looking forward to the opportunity to check this new printer out, when it finally arrives.

Not too good right now, needs problem solving
Not very happy with this at the moment. I purchased this because I wanted to be able to print from both my Mac and Windows laptop. HP Easy setup was not as easy as it is supposed to be. My husband could not get the printer to work and is still trying to configure his laptop to be compatible with this printer even though he downloaded the proper software, etc. I got my Mac to work but I thought the color laser would be crisp however the color on the printout is faded looking and light compared to my previous HP inkjet printer. And last but not least, it is supposed to be wireless and I have it right next to my router and yet it takes forever for the printer to receive the information and begin printing. I'm not impressed.

The device works fine for my small office. Good speed, quality, and ease of use. the main deficiency is the scan software. The print is so small, it is difficult for these old eyes to read the text in the menu and it cannot be adjusted or maximized to fix the issue. Fix this and the product gets a 5.

Purchased printer and install was easy going. Trying to figure out how to set the folder for scanned documents to go to. Periodically have smudged prints. Its early yet, so we hope to get these issues figured out. Most copies are beautiful, so it could be something simple.

We have two of these printers in our office, One of them the display screen went dim and will not brighten back up and the other one the dock feeder hasn't worked hardy at all as it jams almost every time we use it which is very frustrating to say the least, We are very disappointed in a few areas, Other than the mentioned issues the printer is great.

We bought this HP LaserJet Pro for our home office during quarantine. It was easy to configure on our WiFi network, and it has been an excellent investment. Prints on two sides to save paper, and copies and scans well through the feeder. Print cartridges are expensive, but we knew to expect that. They are easy to replace.

I purchased this about 5 months ago and it broke, all the papers started jamming and it no longer is functional. i know its covered under warranty but I don't have time to dig through a box full of several thousand receipts, I own an architectural company and a construction company. although HP oversized plotters seem to work great, as well as my office full of HP printers work great, i have never had issues with them. this small one does not work good. I do not recommend this printer.

This is by far the BEST printer I ever purchased. (Purchased directly from HP) I liked it so much that I bought the mid-range model for my home office while quarantined during the pandemic. No problems with installation as I used the USB printer cable to load the software and drivers and then connected it to wireless. The one at work is Windows 10 based and the one at home is Mac iOS. They both work flawlessly. Very happy with speed and output. I did have one minor issue with paper selection but HP support was able to correct my setting and get me going again. I have used Dell, Brother, and Canon printers in the past but I am very pleased with these HP printers and highly recommend them.

I bought the previous generation of this printer for a family member two years ago. It's worked flawlessly in its multifunction capacities—printer, scanner, fax, copier. I was at a point where I needed to replace my aging color laser printer (Samsung CLP-620ND) and standalone scanner. I didn't hesitate to order this printer knowing how well my family member's had performed.
I was pleased to find HP was running a sale. So, my first delight was the $200 discount. I love the small footprint of this machine, the affordable yet modestly sized toner cartridges, and the intuitive software and controls. I plugged this machine into my network and phone line and was faxing and printing in under 5 minutes.
I highly recommend this multifunction machine. It's a great value at a great price!

Scans are CROOKED!
I bought this for the scan to network folder with multiple page per PDF feature. I can NOT connect to network every time I go to use this printer. I have contacted tech support over 10 times. They would change this setting and that setting and get it working. I go to use it again & it doesn't connect. I have reset to factory default many times. For it to work, I have to turn off and reboot the printer. Then, I have to keep hitting scan to folder at least 10 times and then it will finally miraculously connect.
This is used for a business. I can't spend all this time every time I want to use the printer. I usually just scan to a USB memory stick and manually transfer the files to the computer. I use my other two laser printers for my printing.
COVID happened & now I'm stuck with this expensive piece of equipment.

I have been using this printer for a couple of weeks now, and I am very impressed. My 13 year old son unboxed and set it all up for me. He didn’t have any issues and it works perfectly. Compared to my last printer, I’m happy with the design and functions of this printer. It is fast and the print outs are high quality. The scanning feature was seamless with my Mac, and even did double sided scans with ease. I’m a very happy customer.

Purchased this printer becuase it had all the features we were looking for - duplex print and scan were the top two. We were also tired of having to throw out printers because the print heads dried out with inkjet.
I was really able to put this printer to the test over the last 5 weeks when I had to work from home. Everything worked great...except one flaw...the print driver does not allow for you to change the print quality!
Over the 5 weeks of working from home I ran through an entire set of toner, to the tun of almost $450.00!...this seems like a huge expensive issue with the driver! I have never had a printer where I was unable to adjust the print quality; I have always owned HP printers; again, this has never been an issue! Albeit, the prints are extremely nice and on par.
The ONLY thing holding this review back from a 5 star is the lack of being able to change the print quality!
HP PLEASE FIX THIS DRIVER!!!!

I bought this for a home office, main use is running copies, scanning to PDF and Printing.
Machine works well for all of these tasks. Easy interface on touch screen (screen is a little small, but still works). The setup for connecting via supplied USB cable was easy; however the setup for connecting via WiFi was not so easy, but did finally get it done.

I'm very happy with the printer. It was easy to set up and the toner was already installed, which was nice. The feature I appreciate most (and the primary reason for buying this model) is the ability to scan and print double-sided automatically. I had an HP deskjet that was very slow, and this LaserJet is much, much faster. Toner is not cheap, but I expect that in the long term it will be much less expensive than the ink was for my old printer. It was a bit heavy to remove from the box and place next to my PC, but I was aware of that when I bought it, and I do not expect to have to move it. I bought an extended warranty (HP CarePack), which I would recommend - if a printer needs repair, this is the way to go. My only issue is that I had expected an email within 30 days from HP with instructions on registering the CarePack, and that never came. I had to call them to get that registered - you don't want to have to be dealing with that a year down the road when and if it needs service! (Finding the purchase order number, etc., can be a real hassle if you're not well-organized.) Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase - I've been an HP fan for decades, because the make superior printers IMHO.

Loaded with Features. Still some bugs
This printer is the highest rated, best feature-packed printer we could find. Air printing (works great!); automatic duplex printing and coping, four color with individual toners; fax to computer; scanning. And it is MUCH quieter than the CP4025 it replaced.
However, it has bugs that keep me troubleshooting my brand-new printer! The HP support is terrific. But it takes up valuable working time to get the help. I will say that we just bought a second one, and the set up and use has been markedly easier. Hopefully HP will figure out the trouble on the first one, and we will be able to enjoy the purchases.
One last note - the toner is VERY expensive. They are half the size of the CP4025, and cost just as much.

Great multi function printer!
Replaced an older multi function printer with the new HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw. The drivers were easy to install and as other HP function controls, the printer was easy to work to do my printing tasks such as printing documents and scanning to email in black and white or color. I am also able to use other computers in the area (including a Mac) to print when added to our small network. The paper feeder for those multi page print and scan jobs is a time saver as well. The air print function is a dream come true for doing those quick needed copies straight from my iPhone or iPad. The Fax machine portion of this MFP printer was also easy to set-up and runs smoothly.

I bought this printer to handle the bulk of heavy document production in a one person law office. This printer has exceeded eye expectations in every almost every way possible. Printer set up problems
My son hooked up the printer and it worked fine for a while then it would not let me scan.
So he came back tonight and after two hours we killed the USB connection and went wireless. He could not get the computer to recognize the printer. I hope he as it fixed if not I have a problem

Great, but M477fdw "Printer Offline" hard to fix
I bought Laserjet M477fdw March 2019. Struggled with "Printer Offline" messages. Have spent many hours working on this, or I would give it a 5. HP said run Scan Doctor 5.3.0. Didn't work. HP Community said use Scan Doctor 5.0.5. That fixed it by changing a WSD port to a TCP/IP port. (And Printer & Scanner are now listed separately on devices page - who knows why- but it works.) And, separately, "very low toner" messages interfere on screen. Finally found place in manual to change that, after a hint from the HP community. If you are a sophisticated user then don't hesitate to buy this very nice machine. Or (like me) it will be an opportunity to learn about ports, and about the HP Community page.

For starters, there are no drivers downloads from HP's site for this printer and Windows 10. I tried printing in color on Avery labels and the results were marginal; the toner bleeds to other parts of the label sheet. In other words, it doesn't print cleanly. The feeder doesn't work when you're trying to scan multiple sheets of paper, which I found out from reading online that this is a known issue that HP has yet to offer a solution. Overall, this printer is on the disappointing side.

Brand new printer, less than a week old and the copier makes lines down the whole side of the copy. I was offered a refurbished unit in exchange, I elected to have this one fixed, I do not have high hopes for this. The printer also becomes unresponsive after sitting over night, this requires a shutdown and restart.

This is the worst HP printer (or product, for that matter). At about 3 months, I started having issues with it. Intermittent errors. So I called tech support. They would try/change something and call back 2-4 days later. I went through that cycle few times, all the time it continued to get worse. After a couple weeks of this, they finally decided to send out a person. By this time it had failed completely. I am a business and no printer is a big problem (other business owners can relate). Fortunately, I had another, low volume printer to use. When the tech got here, he said it was so messed up he recommended a replacement. So I spent another day or so waiting for someone to call me to arrange a replacement. Then it took another week to receive it. Overall is was almost a month of time spent with tech support to get to this point.
The new one was never quite right either. It has had intermittent problems, mostly with scanning: can't connect, used by another, won't work through my accounting software. Other times it has printing problems: send something to it to print and it just stays in the queue. Shut it down, restart, resubmit your printout and then it prints.
Annoying things:
It also just randomly "wakes up". I did talk to a tech about that and he said it does that to check the toner cartridges. Why it does this is when it isn't being used? Couldn't tell you, makes no sense to me.
Somebody else mentioned that scans from the feeder are not straight. I have that problem too.
HP printers use up color. This HP printer (and my previous printer) uses up the color toner when you have all the color printing turned off in the printer settings and software settings. I print mostly in B&W. And I still go through color toner. FYI: I do have another brand of printer and it doesn't use up the color. Even when the black is low, it gives you an option colors to make black or not. That would be a nice option for HP to add! Instead of using up expensive color toner.
Good things about it: the by-pass tray, the optional 500 sheet paper tray and print quality.
Overall, I am very disappointed with this printer. Especially considering that I am on the second one.
Next printer? I always used to just look at HP only, but not sure now.

Printed highlighted text too dark
I use highlighting on most of my text documents. This printer would print certain BRIGHT colors like sky blue so dark you could not read the text.

Short Life Span
I bought this model a year ago (13 months) and have used it a few times a month, for small print jobs. After using it successfully last week, I attempted to use it again, but realized it was off. Upon turning it on, I realized it didn't power up. I have tried several power outlets, and even a new cord. I have gone through the trouble shooting options, and after hours on the phone with support, I have been told to call a service tech, for which I will be liable to pay for out of pocket.
I need a printer for my work from home position, so I will be buying a new printer. Definitely not this one though!
It did work for the 13 months I had it: hence the two stars.

Received our MFP M479fdw just last week and it is a wonderful machine. The scanning feeder gives us straight pages. The colors are vivid! When I send a document to the printer by WiFi, it reacts in seconds and the page is popping out the front in just a few seconds. This machine is working well for our Business and much better than the Inkjet printer, scanner, fax that we used before.

I think this is one of the best multifunction devices out there for the price point. Printing and scanning is fast, color output is decent. It’s not the most quiet printer, but overall it’s a solid device with practical features. Fairly compact, not too heavy, easy to set up and use, and attractive design.

27 Year Customer Leaves HP
Overall products has "cheap" plastic feel. The scan quality is the worst I've seen in any HP product. The customer service was worst part of the deal and ultimately what resulted in the return and full refund of the order. I've been an HP customer for 27 years and never once had to return a product until now. I will never utilize HP nor any HP product again in my lifetime.

Too early to give a meaningful review
The printer looks OK. It is heavier and bigger than home user printers. The touch screen is nice and seems to work OK. My initial impression (about a week) is that the hardware is nice for the price but the software and support is troublesome. More time is needed to get by the startup frustrations and settle in to a long spell of satisfaction. I spent a few days with HP "chat" support from India trying to work through Scan to Email issues. Chat connection kept failing and trying to resume the session at a later time was frustrating and time consuming; like starting over. The HP chat connection reliability is the worst I have experienced in 25+ years of IT and engineering. The support technicians seemed like they were handling multiple sessions in parallel as evidenced by long delays responding to my questions and answers.

scan quality terrible. legal to letter cuts off
This is the worst printer I have ever had in 30 years of HP printers. The scans are blurry. When copying from document feeder, it leaves a line. And when copying from Legal to Letter size, it cuts off the lower portion of the document. I have spent hours on HP's website trying to remedy these issues. Office Max was helpful, but their solution of changing out the print cartridges because they said it sounded like a drum problem, did not correct any of the issues.

I love the short time to start printing whether color or B&W. Quick and accurate color printing. This is so much faster and better than our previous ink jet printer from a different company. We've had it less than a month, so I can't comment on supply use or reliability. One negative... it didn't work well with Spectrum Cable's newest WiFi router. I solved the problem by installing my own WiFi router.

I tried a couple of HP All in Ones for my home office but always had little problems with them such as paper handling and loss of wireless connectivity. Finally, decided that I needed a business level device and got this one. It has only a slightly larger footprint that the consumer units but is about 6-8 inches taller. I have had no problems with connectivity and the printing and paper handling is excellent. Costs more than twice the consumer units but the extra cost is worth it.

Purchased this for our business to replace a 6yo HP LaserJet printer that had served diligently the entire time without issue. In two weeks of operation, it has locked down with an error code on three different occasions. One of those times there was a paper jam in the back of the device and the issue was quickly corrected. The other two times it just refused to leave Error Mode even after multiple reboots. No jams were located, nothing was changed - it just decided to not work for half an hour.

Not a copier!!!!
One of the first things I needed to do was copy legal forms for my husband's business. I have yet to figure out how to do so!!! How can you not make a copy of a legal size form?!

Every feature needed for a home office!
I have used an all-in-one inkjet printer for more over 10 years, and was hesitant to try a laserjet, but the MFP M479fdw performs every function of an all-in-one printer, prints double-sided copies (a must for me), and the print quality is much better than most printers. It prints very quietly, and one of my favorite features is that the printed material remains in an inner tray rather than printing to an outside tray that can sometimes allow the documents to dispense out of order. This is a very upscale printer for a very reasonable price!

From Box to Printing in under 15 Min!! I am so impressed with how easy this printer was to set up. Took it out, plugged it in, and it downloaded quickly to my computer. The ink is already Installed so no extra work needed.
1) We own a business and have used different scanners in the past and this is so much quicker. From scan to download is almost instantaneous.
2) Print quality is great.
3) Can be accessed through my desktop or mobile device.
Only been a couple days so far but I can tell this is going to be a great addition to my home office!

Scanner Feature Does Not Install!
I bought this Multi Function Printer (MFP) 3 weeks ago and no matter what I tried, including an OS factory restore/recovery of my laptop (Spectre x360, Product #4HG39AV_1), the scanning feature will NOT install. I have 2 of these (identical) laptops purchased in January 2019. Both laptops have the EXACT SAME scanning problems.
My Spectre laptops are running Win-10 Home, v1903 (OS build 18362.295).
As a former IT and network integration consultant for over 15 yrs (and a former authorized HP reseller), I know quite a bit about troubleshooting. I have tried everything to meet the challenge and beat the problem. I lost! It cost me wasting over 60+ hrs of my life!
I have even posted a problem report on HP's support forum. I got the canned response to uninstall, then re-install. Scan function still does not work! I then posted back on the forum specific error messages and even gave them a link to my PDF file which contained installation screen shots. No one from HP (or anyone else, for that matter) ever followed up. My support posting remains unresolved as of this date.
This is a brand new product from HP, released in July 2019. It was an upgrade/update to the M477 MFP version printer.
I've downloaded and installed the latest/updated driver:
CLJM478f-M479f_UWWL_Full_WebPack_48.2.4526.exe
No luck.!
When I launch the desktop icon for the HP Scan, then click the action button to scan, I get the error dialog box that says "The scanner failed to complete the scan. Verify that the scan feature is enabled on the device."
When I try to scan using the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS), I get the error message "You cannot use this function because it has been disabled. For more information, contact the person who setup the printer." I am the IT TekHead who did the installation!
I then ran the HP Print and Scan Doctor v5.2.1. It reported:
"Out of Paper."
"Please load the paper into the input tray to print."
The paper tray was full!!!
This printer & its installation software has failed on so many levels including proper and comprehensive testing and quality control!
My conclusion is that this HP printer scanning feature absolutely will not properly install on my new HP laptops and that this device is not ready for market.
The print function does work and I can use the printer's control panel to copy a document from the flatbed or the automatic document feeder.
Now about the FAX feature... during the software/driver installation routine, I opted to Skip the FAX setup wizard as I don't have a landline. Guess what!!! There is a Fax device icon in: Control Panel => Devices and Printers
The icon's text reads: Fax - HP Color LaserJet Pro M478f-9f .
Regarding the device's touch LCD panel... I came across instructions how to remove (drag-drop) an unwanted icon (in my case, Fax) off of the display. Guess what doesn't happen? Can't remove the Fax icon. Then I came across a web site notation that to remove an icon from the LCD panel, use the Embedded Web Server. But they didn't mention how to do it. Guess what I cannot locate on the EWS how to do this, and the printer's documentation has no mention about this icon removal feature.? I don't want or need the visual pollution of a Fax icon on the LCD panel.
This is a business class LaserJet. I finally threw in the towel and decided that, after 60+ hrs of troubleshooting, it's time to give up and let HP solve the problems it created in this product development. Today, being Saturday, the LaserJet tech supt phone line is closed!

I have been wanting a laser printer a long time. This one by HP has surpassed everything I expected. This has many capabilities. Holds lots of paper, has easy to understand instructions. The setup was super easy and has been working perfectly. Its a heavy machine, but sturdy and seems to be made to last. I was very surprised at how quick it can print and scan. Has a compartment that makes it really easy to change toner. My favorite is how great the images are with this machine. Beautiful detailed images that are of great quality and bright. Very clear pictures. Perfect for office needs, crafts where I need a printer or just printing quality pictures. Best printer I have ever had.

Multi functional is the right way to describe this as it does everything. It’s pretty fast compared to our old inkjet. Hoping the ink last longer than ink jets. Quality of the printouts are such much better than inkjets.

Awesome speed and print quality
This Color LaserJet is replacing a workhorse HP PageWide printer that I absolutely love (and still works very well - going to my daughter). This printer has excellent print quality and speed. I particularly appreciate the ability to print directly from my iPhone if I need something on the run.
This is my first go at a color laser printer, and I'm liking what I see so far!

i purchases this machine as an replacement for the 271 which we used daily. out of the box the software would not load properly after 4 attempts of reloading finally got it to do the basics of copy and print no scanning. everytime it printed it would say it was out of paper regardless that it was full. hp did a great job returned with no drama and found a new 271 to replace the old

BEWARE: Not fully compatible with Mac
I bought this a few weeks ago when it was on sale and was told it was fully compatible with Mac. Most of the features work if you are operation from your computer, but if you try to scan from the machine and save to the computer, it does not work. I spoke to both HP and Apple about it and no solution :( If anyone can help me, I am all ears! Hopefully an update will fix it as I will most likely keep the machine as it works for 90% of what I do. It is just an annoyance.

This doesn’t disappoint. I can’t believe how simple setup was, even when I have some trouble with technology. It prints like a dream, moves quickly and very clear, smooth ink. I love it so far and would highly recommend this printer for any professional.

WOW What an upgrade
So first I have to say WOW! This is one heck of a printer! This printer has it all! Very very sturdy, Easy to learn, and just all in all great! Once I hooked it up the first thing I did was hooked it up to both of my computers and both hooked up sooo easy! I had a little issues with the drivers downloading on my laptop but once I did the manual setup I had no issues at all. The set up was such a breeze! This does have a little weight to it so if you have back issues or any other kind of issues, I would suggest having someone else moving it for you. Honestly I can see this one lasting a long time! I will be referring everyone into getting this printer! GREAT ALL AROUND.

One AWESOME Multifunctional Laser Printer/Scanner
Maybe I'm just "wowed" because I came from an 9-year old HP OfficeJet 8500 Premier multifunctional inkjet printer. However, this being my first foray into owning a laser printer after dealing only with inkjet printers for years prior to this one, I am simply amazed! The technology improvements over my last printer, as well as the "pros" of laser over ink print is absolutely impressive! I was scanning some old photos (I mean really old) and did a few test prints on just plain paper and the quality was superior to what I just scanned in terms of sharpness and color. It was "eye-popping!" Doing a lot of electronic document scanning on my old multifunctional printer scanner, my experience with that was extremely slow compared to this one. My big frustration with my older printer was with the automatic two-sided scans. It was hit-and-miss with it. It was all mechanical, in that it would scan one side and then mechanically flip the page to the other side to scan it. Depending on the scanned document and the bond and type of paper, it would sometimes jam and I'd end up having to scan it using the flatbed with the manual approach. My first experience, doing a two-sided scan with this was amazing! At first, having been used to a scanner employing the old two-sided, mechanical process-based scan, I thought this printer only scanned one side, even though I selected two-sided. After all, this scanner just zipped it through incredibly fast without flipping the page! I went to my computer and opened the document on the network share that I scanned the document to and saw that it had indeed scanned both sides with just a single-pass. It scans so incredibly fast with both single- and two-sided documents it is amazing and the auto-document feed works great. Print results are fantastic as well. I would highly recommend this printer. Granted the price of the toner my cause initial "sticker shock," you have to consider also, not only the improvement in print quality, but also that a toner cartridge goes a lot further than an ink cartridge. We did comparisons of printing a page with print and color illustrations, both in color as well as in grayscale (black only) modes and compared and the results were fantastic. This printer made a color illustration look like a high quality black-and-white lithograph!
To those who've been using inkjet, this is a perfect opportunity to step into a laserjet. Based on my experience with this laserjet, I never want to go back to inkjet again. For personal or small business use, I would highly recommend this printer. The price point with the current "back to school" sales promotion combined with this feature-rich, quality multifunctional printer/scanner can't be beat! I did a lot of research before purchasing this product, comparing other brands like Canon, etc. to this and this one kept standing out, so I took the leap and am glad I did!

Easy to set up, great performance!
The HP Color LaserJet Pro is the first laser printer I have ever owned. So far, I am very impressed. It was easy to set up and connect to wirelessly from our computers. The print quality is outstanding, and the document is printed by the time I walk over to the machine, so it is quick. There are no smudges, the colors are vibrant and blacks are clean and dark.
The printer weighs almost 60 lbs, so if you're unable to lift that amount safely, have a buddy help you unbox it. It is larger and bulkier than the inkjet printers we have used in the past, but the real estate it takes up is worth it. Before, we would have to replace toner in our other printers quite frequently. This laserjet printer looks like it will print around 2000 prints per cartridge, which is amazing. It may be years before we need to replace them.
This printer is perfect for small to medium business, and home office use. documents are printed well, resolution is great, and the printer is quick and quiet. I highly recommend this printer for those on the market for a new one. It's very easy to set up and use right out of the box. We didn't run into any glitches at all, and again, the quality of the prints is fantastic!

No Quality Control on Production
I actually returned the machine 3 times and on the 3rd time I told them I wanted my money back. The first one kept cherping as if buttons were being pressed when no one was using the machine. The second on you would press scan and get half way through the scan process and the meching would go back to the home screen. The thrid one would not line up with the drivers. After having an HP2320 for 9 years and a MFP476dn for 4 years this is a big let down. Customer service was so poor that issues got worse so I had to hit the reset factory settings.
they should have paid me for all the hassel, lost time and wasted paper.

This printer is bigger than what we thought it would be, but its not huge by any means. Just know it takes up some desk space.
The ease of connecting this to our network and using it was an amazing experience, we were up and running in about 3 min. We have it connected via eithernet connection to our wireless router. We can print docs from our phone and any computer connected to the wireless router. It also has wifi, so we can send it that way also. We absolutely love the prints this puts out and the double sided printing is so nice, major time saver. The touch screen is very responsive and is laid out very nicely, very user friendly.
If this printer broke today would we buy another one the answer would be yes!

Great design, but defective drivers/software.
Great design for a laser printer and I may get the additional third paper tray. However, I can't really speak on the print quality. I say that because this printer has defective print drivers/software as of now. Currently, anyone who tries to use this printer is unable to select a print quality option. I reached out to HP and confirmed that this is an issue due to a poor driver. We tried installing the UPD which allowed us to select a print quality option, but the choices were limited and uncommon. Usually, you have draft, normal and best selections for example. This is disappointing for me since I now have to wait for a driver update before using my new printer. I understand this is a new release, but this product should not have been released without a fully working driver/software. That is why I can only give this printer 2 stars.

Great except setup
I learned the hard way that there is an M479 driver and an M478f-9f driver. For this guy you need the 8f-9f driver.
Getting some of the settings right took a little bit, I ended up doing factory reset more than once, but it was probably not required, just the way I got there.
Now that it is all setup the way I want it, it is working great. The ADF scanner is awesome in that it can save out to my QNAP nas (I had to specify the IP Address of the nas, not the name to make it happy, but that was easy enough).

I bought this printer 18 months ago for light use. Yes, the printer worked fine but a week ago the hinge on the cover snapped and HP says they will not fix. Speaks to poor build quality and poor customer service.

The product seems cheaply made. Really surprised by how poorly some of the trays slide; doors open/shut, etc. Furthermore, lot of frustrating software issues. We have HP computers, which should have made the process more seamless. Sigh.

14 months of light use and stopped working.
Worked fine until it didn't. I bought this printer for my home office 11/21. Stopped working March 1, 2022. Light use, I only printed 1500 pages per statue report. HP says it's a hardware issue and will cost me a minimum of $363 to fix. I have $500 worth of toner I've never even opened. Sadly, first and last HP printer for me.

This cost about three times more to use then my old HP Printer mainly because of the new printer cartridges for it. You can only get the ones with the chips from HP and they cost around 90.00 each. My old HP printer worked with the cheaper cartridges and this one does not.

I am very pleased with my purchase of a new MFP M479fdw HP Laser Jet printer. I called HP direct and asked the sales person his recommendation for use in my motor coach home/office. The printer is anchored to one of two office 2 drawer wood cabinets with quick release attachments for safety and service ability. The scanner is useful for saving documents to the computer server. Checks and envelopes are easily loaded and printed from the pulldown drawer1 and printing on both sides for presentation booklets from drawer 2 is with ease.

This is the worst printer I have owned in many years. Splotches of ink (HP, not knockoff) ruin almost every page. Also, paper size keeps resetting to "A4", a size that we don't even have in North America. Worse yet, Customer Service is nonexistent.

Good Value - Affordable - Would Recommend
I was looking for a versatile all-in-one printer/scanner/fax machine with wi-fi. It checked all the boxes. Was affordable. Was available. It was a little difficult to get fax machine to work correctly (which seemed odd). I am a self-admitted semi-techie. So, I have to call IT sometimes, but grew up on computers. And that being said, set-up could have been easier. I still have to use HP Suite for scanning. I haven't figured out how to get scan button to send PDF to my computer (maybe one day). It is quick to print and scan. Initial toner tanks: I have gotten about 1,000 pages from black and over 1200 from color and still have color toner left. The printer does "lock-up" every couple of days. I have to power it down and turn it back on and goes to working perfect. All that being said, I would buy this printer again and would recommend to a friend.

Very difficult to set up after following the easy initial instructions. Then it doesn't recognize anything you're doing. So I hired an IT specialist who got the job done.

Love HP printers but not impressed with this one. Bought it to replace an old 4005dn. Printed a few workbooks and I'm getting sporadic, blotchy pages and some ghosting. Starter cartridges went WAY to fast. Good thing I ordered back ups. I will likely look for a replacement for this one now as well :/

The HP Color LJ Pro MFP M479fdw is serving our small business very well. It was especially important to have a bypass tray to print on envelopes and letterhead without having to unload the regular paper tray. Although, I have not been able to figure out how to scan using the touch screen, the HP Smart app makes this a simple task.

WORST PRINTER EVER! SKIP THIS ONE
This printer is so slow when on a network connection. If the document is more than 4 pages long it will start to only print one page at a time until its completed the job. It has to stop and start several times. The biggest issue with this printer is the document scanner. It almost always messes up when trying to scan in multiple documents. It will grab 2 to 4 pages at a time and either scan just the top one or get jammed. Also the pages scanned show up slightly sideways when you view them - cutting off some of the document. I thought maybe the printer was picky with what paper we used so I bought HP paper and tried to scan in document with that type of paper and it still has a ton of issues. SKIP THIS ONE.

Great printer so far, I did have a small hickup today with my laptop not printing, but was able to print from another device. I think maybe Wi-Fi connection was lost. I think the ink cartridge may be a little expensive, I am going to join the HP ink program.

However, very disappointed that an important feature that made this printer stand out for us were two magazine reviews that claimed this printer model was eligible for the 'Instant Ink' toner program that would save on the relatively high toner usage costs for this printer vs. other similarly featured units.

I paid a lot of money for this printer. It is now 5 months old and it is failing. The display panel is having issues. The roller has to be cleaned about every 5th sheet. It eats ink at an alarming pace. I will not be purchasing this brand again.

worst printer I have ever had. I have had the mother board replaced, I have had numerous chats with HP techs, now they tell me that it is my network. This stupid printer has to be turned off and on numerous times every day because it just decides not to print. Now after all the work that has been done when they took my computer over to "fix" the printer....my other HP printer suddenly is not working on the network. The message is "there is no driver". Thanks HP....oh, by the way it is also an HP all in one printer. I have tried to deal with HP about it and have gotten nowhere. It is still under warranty.

HP Color LaserJet 300 - 400 Series - No good!
I have been buying HP LaserJet printers since Series II -amazing workhorse. Unfortunately, a lot has changed in the industry due planned obsolescence strategy, etc. The average HP Color LaserJet Pro 300 and 400 Series design and quality has been a steady decline, each the device last less than the previous model and each was a higher model and more expensive!
The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP479fdw is without question the worst Multi-Function device conceived by HP product engineers.
1. Touchscreen control panel: Not intuitive, Confusing, Annoying and Frustrating, easy for someone to accidentally reconfigure.
2. Touchscreen control panel: Poorly designed, and placed, users unable to scan a book due to screen being placed against scanning surface.
3. Walk-up USB por: Not easily visible, users have to squat down almost to port level to find it and use it, I cannot image how bad this device is to use for people with disabilities, access to port should be unencumbered.
4. Document feeder output tray: Sheets often get shuffled after 5 or more, Sheets often end up on the floor after 8 or more.
5. Output bin: Sheets often get shuffled after 5 or more, Sheets often end up on the floor after 8 or more.
6. Output bin: Opening is very limited for average size hands when retrieving short forms such as laser checks, I cannot image how bad this device is to use for people with disabilities, access to output bin should be unencumbered.
7. Device setup: Complicated, No QR Code to manual.
8. Device Embedded Web Server: Non-intuitive.
9. Fax: Configuration complicated, non-intuitive and buggy, Requires Distinctive Ring Service if sharing landline which is outdated and not available by many VoIP vendors, and if using voicemail on the same line you will need a second line.
10. Device is engineered to go through OEM toner like nobody's business, the use of Non-OEM toner has been intentionally complicated, in one year the average SOHO will spend more on OEM toner than the cost of the printer by a minimum of two folds.

Nice Printer with a nice color quality.
This machine is a good little home use machine however this machine does not allow me to copy or scan any legal documents. I was under the impression that it could allow this feature since its predecessor (477fdw) can scan and copy both legal and letter size documents. the lack of that feature is what makes this machine very inconvenient. Upon rereading the brochure again, i noticed that it was very vague in the copy size supported paper. Even the print sizes as well was very vague and lead on that it could print up to A4. This one lacking feature is why I cant give this machine more than 3 stars. If there is a fix i am open to hearing what it is. I did attempt to speak to a virtual assistant for assistance in this matter but I got no feedback or help of any kind.

Support difficult to access
Our business has been trying to reach HP support for this printer. This apparently is not an easy option. Our new printer is set to default to double-sided copy options. We would like, simply, to change that copy function default to one-sided. I have had no luck finding a phone number or an online chat option to support that change. I've left messages with our sales rep to reach out to me. Nada. I've tried setting up an HP account for help. Nada. We have been HP advocates (over the recommendations of our tech experts) for the past 7 years. This is the first time HP has let me down. I am seriously rethinking my commitment to this brand.

Poor post-purchase experience
On Monday, May 16, 2022, I ordered an HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw printer through the HP web store. The printer was delivered to my home via FedEx on Saturday, May 21, 2022.
When I setup the printer, I made a mistake. I removed the mylar strips on the ADF (automatic document feeder) glass. The reason I removed them is that I thought they were shipping tape. There printer has a warning sign against removal of the strips, but I mis-interpreted the sign.
On Wednesday, May 25, 2022, to see if the printer's ADF issue could be repaired, I dropped it off at Lewan & Associates (an approved HP service provider) in Englewood, Colorado.
As of submitting this survey (about 7:30 pm MDT on Wednesday, 6/8, 2022), I have not heard anything further from Lewan & Associates regarding the printer. It's unclear at this point what the printer's ultimate disposition will be.
Regardless, I need a printer. Today, I ordered another HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw from Best Buy at around the same cost ($750) as the one ordered from the HP web store.
It's unfortunate that HP and its service providers have not been responsive to my attempts to find a solution (or even communicate) regarding whether the issue with the original printer could be resolved.

Excellent Choice of Printer
Plug-and-play set up, good graphics (for my small business applications), quieter than the HP printer it replaced. The ink will be less expensive than the HP printer it replaced (unheard of, right?). We're pleased.

Looks like the same garbage printer as the M477
I've always had good luck with HP printers but the M477 was a piece of garbage. This looks like the identical printer with no changes except the price is $350 more. I need a new printer because the M477 just suffered catastrophic failure after several years of dysfunctional performance. It was also crappy at scanning and constantly failed and/or jammed. The ridiculous placement of the digital screen makes it impossible to scan a page from a textbook or a part of any large object. Does HP even bother to test their printers anymore before building them? I reported this design flaw to them years ago but I guess the engineers never got the message because not one detail aside from the price has changed on this giant paperweight.

Purchase of printer
I love the HP MFP M479 printer. It was super easy to install, I’m so proud of myself. We are baby boomers & not born during the computer age but didn’t need special skills for the setup. HP is a name we trust, we have one at our home & this one was for our beach house. If we have a need in the future we will not hesitate to purchase another HP!

HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479 fdw
I had used an Epson printer with the huge ink tanks for years and found it to be a source of frustration for me as my printer requirements are small; having to print only every month or two. I was always dealing with dried ink and had to spend too much time cleaning the heads to get it to print.
Though I've only had the LaserJet Pro a few weeks it is serving me well and I'm very happy with its performance. I would definitely recommend this printer.

Perfect except when it powers down to save energy
The printer is fantastic except for the ridiculous feature that puts it to sleep and then disconnects from the wireless network. Once that happens I can’t print to it without turning it off then on again. It’s a boat anchor.

It is difficult to get all of the functions to work on my iMac. Even simple features like putting a document under the glass for a copy, won't work, says nothing in the document feeder. Seriously Scan feature does not work, have to put a usb into the printer.

M479 Legal Size Paper
Be aware when using legal paper that the tray sticks out about 2" all of the time. It is a ridiculous design. Also made of very cheap plastic. I tried to upgrade with the HP salesperson direct but they were of no help at all. If you do not need legal, this is an ok printer. I do not trust this in a commercial application.

Easy set up. Works like a beauty!
Had this puppy delivered about a month ago after my 6 year old HP printer took a dump and no one on earth wants to fix it. HP doesn't even know how or at least that's what they said to force me to buy this new printer. Either way, it works great. Hopefully when this one poops out, they can fix it instead of stiffing me.

Up and printing within 15 -20 minutes
I have used HP LaserJet MFP models 177, 477 and now the 479. M479 is a great machine. No issues setting it up. I was up and printing within 15 minutes on an ethernet network.
I will have to say compared to it's older brothers, the quality and solidness of the plastic of the M479 is a bit cheaper quality. But at the end of the day, if it prints 20-30 pages a day, scans a few documents and photos per week, and lasts for 4-5 years, then who cares what it feels like. As long as it does it job reliably.

Works for a small office.
I have had two previous models that this one replaced. Print is not as clear as last model. Does the job needed. Can only scan from glass top, so scanning multiple pages together not an option. Haven't taken the time to search for a solution as our old Mf477 automatically scanned from the top feeder. Overall works for basic printing and copying.

I had purchased this printer about a year ago and every passing day it just gets worse and worse to the point now where it is hardly usable. It just restarts itself repeatedly and I can't get any work done and this is affecting my work. THIS IS THE WORST PRINTER I HAVE EVER HAD.

Old Machine - New Model #
My previous MFP (477) served me well, but after 8 years died. I replaced it with the MFP 479. A couple of points: 1. It's basically the 477 with a couple of updates. 2. The display is in 4-color...but trying to add file labels to scanned documents is tortuous. (Suggestion: Why not let users create scan labels from their computers. It's much easier.). 3. The HP site for purchasing printers needs to add details (like definitions for codes like "fdw, fnw", etc). I ended up talking to a person named "Stormy" in the Philippines and making the purchase by phone after spending a great deal of time trying to figure out what those codes meant. As a small business owner this is an efficient device...although be prepared to pay as much for a replacement set of toner cartridges as you paid for the machine... You may be better off with an ink cartridge machine.

Had my assistant purchase a Brother ink jet who know what. What a mistake. I forgot to tell her to get the Hp color laser jet. My IT guy gave up trying make the Brother even print black. Order my new HP. Amazing all in 1 machine. I love my new HP

Replacing M477fdw
Updated version of the M477fdw which was a workhorse for us. No software comes with the M479, downloads don't fully work and after an hour chatting with a representative I was told it's a computer issue because of Windows 10. We are long-time customers of HP - they should work out issues before selling to customers and offer software. We have been informed that there is not available software for purchase on this unit.

Better than an ink jet
We tried the epson tank style printers and could not get the same quality to our surprise as our old faithful choice of the HP laserjets. We had 1 paper jam when we started but no more after that. It only gets 4 stars due to the actually paper tray. It seems very flimsy and has some seating issues so you have to be gentle with it.

WORST PRINTER EVER... Going in the trash
This printer was purchased for the small business that I work for when our last Laser printer stopped working. My boss purchased this printer and since, we have had nothing but trouble with it. The drivers and application that HP uses, HP Smart, is the least helpful printer application I have personally ever used. It says the printer is "Ready" but no matter what I try to print, it immediately goes into an error state and will not communicate with any other computer than my bosses. This has caused HUGE headaches for our company and I will NEVER recommend an HP printer for a small business. It has cost many hours of my time, which translates to losses for the business. Terrible investment that we are now stuck with.

Great Product
I bought this printer about a month ago. I have already had to install a new black ink. It is fast. I love how when you print and scan it does it all at once. I no longer have to wait for one side to print then the other. The cost of the ink cartridges are high but they are much bigger and last longer. Great product.

I bought this printer last year and immediately needed tech support to get the printer connected to my computer. The issue persists again just in a few month later. Third time I got the same connectivity problem but now I found that my printer out of warranty and I need to pay $40 for one time support.
Do not buy this printer if you don’t want to pay $40 tech support for the same problem. I spent thousands of dollars on purchase of this lemon and toners and now I can’t use it.
Stay away from this lemon.

Great Printer
I love my new printer. My only issue is whenI was setting the printer up for the first time I had to put in a password. I entered the password, I didn’t have to confirm it and now it won’t accept my password. All I can figure is I entered it wrong and now don’t know what the actual password is. So far it hasn’t caused an issue but I would like to get this resolved. I even did a factory reset but it wouldn’t get rid of the password I entered. This password is not the code I have to enter for scanning.

Board went bad 2 months out of warranty and is useless now. Just changed all the cartridges 2 weeks prior and have an extra set sitting on a shelf and no printer and can't get a replacement anywhere. A lot of wasted money in ink just sitting on a shelf.

It's quieter!
I owned the 232 for a while before upgrading to the 479. I find it to be noticeably quieter (wife says they sound the same). I was never able to find a dB rating in the specs anywhere. Overall It seems like a much better machine than the 232. No way I'll be close to the monthly usage rating but for the small price difference it's worth the quality upgrade.

Great product, would do it all over again.
So happy with the whole package. Placing my order with took maybe 1 minute after talking with the staff. Then it came in a couple of days. Open it up, and in 2 minutes, I was so easy to set up and started using it on day one. It's been over a month now, and I still love it.
I have been purchasing cheaper units, and I was purchasing a printer every four months. Do this one is built to handle my business. I wish I would have bought it later. It

Won't stay connected to network
This was way too much money to spend for a printer that won't stay connected to the network. I have been through every trouble-shooting option there is over the past several hours and can't get it to print and I shouldn't have to pay for a service to help me. I've owned the printer for about a year. It is offline about half the time. This time, I've exhausted every resource and can't find a solution. I do not recommend this printer to anyone who uses a wireless network.

Am I missing something? The specs indicate that this printer automatically double duplexes... In what world does that include me flipping over the page each time? That is why I replaced my old printer and purchased this $1000 ink monster. Auto duplex does not include a human being. If I am missing something, let me know!

Scanner feeder does not work
This is the second printer (I exchanged the first one for the same problem), the scanner grabs too many pages and so you have to hand feed the documents to get the scan to work. It is very frustrating.

I have always used HP printers and have had good luck with them. I am very disapointed with this one. The automatic feeder does not properly work 50% of the time and Iam unable to simply check ink levels on the machine.

Grayscale uses color toner!
HP monochrome laser printers do grayscale, and this printer has a black toner cart in addition to the three color toner carts, yet this printer uses the more expensive color toner for grayscale! The dumbest thing I've heard all month. Confirmed by HP support today, 8/4/21. Design oversight? Or just plain predadatory tactic to sell more color toner.
Not as quick as I expected for such a big and heavy unit, but it does duplex printing and duplex scanning. Software is as quirky and odd as HP's has always been. Accessory paper handler almost as expensive as the printer.

This is exactly what i needed. great printer copier and scanner. The HP app desktop and mobile makes it amazingly easy to do anything especially scan. The printer has had some issues where it “goes offline “ and had to call support who tried but couldn’t solve it. I restored my computer and that solved it

We bought this a year ago and since then to scan an item we have to do one sheet at a time because it makes the paper misaligned. sometimes it prints skued. so it does not come in clear. for the price of the machine and ink, definitely not worth. Going to epson eco tank. we are a small business and spending high dollar on what should be quality, not at HP

Good printer, but scanner feeds multiple sheets
This machine is great as a printer. The scanner, however, feeds multiple sheets nearly 100% of the time. The multi-sheet misfeed has been consistent since day one out of the box. If you just need a printer, spend less money on a machine with no scanner. If you need the scanner, you might need to look for a different machine.

it replaced a 12 year old desk jet, that i paid about $300. the document feeder on the old disposable printer is far superior. the M479 can barely handle a hand full of sheets. it feeds crooked most times. scans are even worse, often will feed sheets to copy but the same sheets will not feed to scan. print quality is pretty good so far. wish i hadn't disposed of the old 8600 model. as a laser printer, i sure hope it performs, as it is double the price.

There are 2 items that could be improved.
The scanner glass is only large enough for Letter size or A4 scanning and is not large enough for Legal size scanning.
Scanning for the printer to a computer does not allow full scanning resolution - that has to be done with non-HP software on the computer.

Would be an excellent printer for a small- to mid-sized office. A bit too much for home office. Quality-wise, it's great for regular printing jobs. It does output in color but it's not meant for photo printing, so for reports or newsletters, yes, it's very fine. For a photo... no. Not fine.

Endless problems. Printer not found on the network, scan-to-computer doesn't work half the time, I usually try to budget 15 minutes of troubleshooting before I can do any scanning or serious work with the unit. The printer is totally flakey.

This is the 2nd HP MFP M479fdw we have purchased and that decision was made after using the 1st for over a month in a busy office environment. Scanning is super fast. Print quality is excellent. Having the option to print in B&W only and to buy the high capacity cartridges reduces the cost per page

Printer works great but beware that you need to activate the scan to computer to be able to scan anything... was the only thing that caused a bit of a headache.

Great printer +but be warned: price of HP tank ink is $855 every time you replace it!
The printer itself is a wonderful piece of technology for non-business purposes. THE COLOR REPLICATION & QUALITY IS TOP NOTCH. I gave it 5 stars!
My primary complaint is the EXCESSIVE COST OF THE 4 TANKS OF REPLACEMENT INK
=$855 ---FOR REPLACING THE INK THAT PRICE IS ABSURD! THE INK IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE PRINTER ITSELF. WHAT KIND OF PROFIT DOES HP MAKE ON THIS PRODUCT, 400%? I'm not a business but a private hard working citizen.

Purchased this for a small business and it has been nothing but a headache. Very expensive and now I am going to have to find a different printer.

I hate this printer with a passion. It does print beautifully, when it prints. It requires you to install the HP Smart app on your computer and the app constantly loses contact with the printer or can't scan because it doesn't have internet connectivity, which is not possible since the browser is up and running. It's just ridiculous the amount of stupid problems all having to do with the extra bloated software you have to load to use these printers. I bought 3 for my business and I regret it. When hit print, it should print, when you hit scan, it should scan.

HP 479dfw failure
I was very excited to receive my new printer and scheduled my IT team to install it. We could not get the scanner to communicate with my desktop or scan in PDF format. After several days of phone calls with no success with HP, we finally got someone who spent a significant amount of time with our IT team. At the end, we were told that the model printer had a problem with the platform and that a “fix” would not be available for three months. At that point, I joined the call. I was upset that we had spent $1,000 on a printer that they sold knowing about this defect. Only then were we told that they could email us a workaround until the “fix” was released. Incredible. Shame on you HP. If you have a 479dfw, don’t waste your time. Ask for the workaround immediately.

Excellent product, tough set-up
We are more than happy with the printer itself, the quality of printing, and the improved smaller size from other HP MFPs. However, the reviews about setup are credible. We found either an issue with the wireless connection, the app that commands the set up, or both cause very frustrating issues with the set up of one (HP) computer. The last computer connecting had to be connected via the USB connection to mitigate the problems we were having. We still get errors of missing components in the software install which we expected on this PC because of the issues we ran into. However, it is working fine nonetheless, and prints and excellent document.

Exceptional Laser 479 printer!!
Love the new Laser 479 printer, except that it won’t keep my preset settings saved. It is so much quieter and faster than the old laser 1320. I like the air print feature and so far it seams to not lose its ip address on my network like the old one did. It also prints color just as fast as b&w. Over all I’m very happy with it and glad I finally updated.

I bought this printer for both personal use and my home based business needs. HP made the connection and setup process simple. I was able to quickly and easily connect all of my wireless devices as well as set up an ethernet connection to utilize the fax services this printer is capable of. The print quality is excellent!

Love this Printer!
I have always had great success with HP printers and MFP’s! I'm especially impressed with this latest model HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw. This size is perfect, the control panel is easy to read and use, the Print/Scan speed and quality is great. The perfect overall MFP! I think this is the best Home Office colour laser MFP currently out there in its class. Keep up the good work HP!

Don't buy this printer!!!!
I spent most of the day and over an hour with HP tech support trying to configure this $1,049.00 boat anchor to a new 24" iMac running OSX Monterey. There was NO way to get the scan feature (either single or via the ADF) to work via the control panel on the printer to save the scans to the computer or a network folder. HP tech support reported this doesn't work with Macintosh computers ........ despite the drivers they make available online. Very LAST product from HP Ill purchase. Wish I would have known this before investing most of a day and spending $1,000.00 plus for a printer / scanner that doesn't do what it is advertised to do!!!

This printer is ideal for all of my needs, has a large screen display, quick printing and scanning. I recommend this printer for small to medium size offices. It is a great personal desk top size printer too. Hope you get to experience what I do everyday 6 days a week :) Gotta get one first though !!

High Quality but Minor Software Installation Issue
This HP color LaserJet printer prints quickly with high-quality text, graphics and images. Its copy and scanning functions work well. It appears and feels well-built. The only negative I found is that installation of its software onto a Windows 11 platform is not integrated into the fully automated installation of the printer software that is provided for earlier versions of Windows. This was not obvious and caused me to have to closely read some online material and then install the printer software for Windows 11 to replace the automated installation printer software.

The printer I’ve always wanted
I love this printer! It does envelopes, the larger size paper, and card stock. It does have a fax feature that I don’t need but may use someday. I did not know at the time of purchase the same model came without the fax. This printer does everything I need in copying for home use. The setup was relatively easy but I’m still working on getting scan to email working. The high cost of the toner cartridges is a drawback but they do not have to be replaced as often as on the inkjet I have.

Check The Document Feeder Before Your Warranty Expires
I don't often use a printer/scanner in my day to day, but the few times a year I have to use it for work I send it high volume jobs. The print quality is amazing, and I've not had a single jam printing 100+ page documents. Scan quality also seems to be very solid, I've not yet scanned something at the max DPI. An incredible feature is the double-sided scanning capabilities of the document feeder, which hasn't jammed in my limited testing. That same document feeder is where my only, albeit critical, issue stems from. The very first scan that I performed using the document feeder resulted in a crooked document, slanting the exact same direction on every page. I thought that it was my fault, maybe that I had loaded too many pages into the top or missed a setting on the menu. I didn't redo the scan, so I wouldn't find out until I was out of warranty that it was an issue with the ADF. Here I am a year later needing to scan 300 pages again, only now realizing that it was the machine's fault all along. This is also when I discovered the great double-sided scanning feature, however the result was a document with alternating slanted pages. These printers have a "secret menu" where the scanner calibration can be accessed, and I've yet been unable to access it. I'm unable to diagnose if there's an issue with the hardware or if a simple calibration is all that is needed. This is a home product, and should be able to be serviced by the user. Since I'm out of warranty now, I'm left with a really great printer the size of a really great printer/scanner.

Worst scanner ever
This printer is the worst. What a waste of money, time and patience to call HP more than 10 times and my scanned problem is not resolved. I have to spend so much money scanning at Office Depot because the scanner doesn't work. I have spend more than 10 hours with HP and this is horrible. Don't buy this printer!!!

Hands-down the BEST all-in-one Color Laser Printer
HP's Multi-Function-Device [MFD] is a superbly engineered device that is solidly constructed, provides beautiful color and B&W output, and is amazingly easy to set up. I love the small footprint of the device, taking up a meager 1.5 sq. ft. of desk real estate. Or a printer stand/credenza. Cost per page is much lower than an inkjet, making it sustainable and affordable for most SOHO businesses.

We own several of these printers where I work, and bought this one to replace an aging printer of another style. We love these because they are super reliable, easy to program, and the toner cartridges, while not cheap, are not as expensive as some others. Would not hesitate to purchase another one.

As soon as I powered on the unit, I received an error code. HP representative indicated the code was for a malfunctioning motor and unit was defective. How do you send out products without testing?

Shame on HP for not standing behind their products
The printer works well - the scanner is terrible. I've read about the same problem mine has in other reviews. Scanned documents are skewed from left to right. I notified HP while the printer was still under warranty - then had trouble connecting with them again. Got hold of them 3 weeks out of warranty and they wouldn't do anything about it - even though they knew about it during the warranty.

replacement printer
These are good printers. Sadly this one replaced one that was only 3 years old. Somehow a section of a document imprinted on the roller and printed it on every invoice ... We chose to replace instead of repair out of need to have a working printer. It was a slightly different model. We chose this new on the mere fact it used the same ink cartridges. They are not cheap! and we had those in stock already.

Basic Not PRO wish We had bought a different model. This model is noisy. The interface is not user friendly. The rollers error now and then. Super expensive to repair. Laser cartridges are expensive. The print quality is ok. The speed isn't great.

I’ve been using the MFP M476dw for about 7 years now. I expected much more from the MFP M479fdw. It’s unfortunate these printers are not made by Apple…they would be far more user friendly after 7 years.

Super HP 479dfw Printer
I loved my 479fdw but recently it refused to accept the color ink cartridges. It has worked perfectly for almost 2 years. Had absolutely no complaints prior to this problem. Am sad I cannot purchase another bec discontinued. I had a warrantee 4 yr plan I took which was $60 additional. Never purchase electronic equipment without an extended warrantee. I am having no problem getting a replacement with full cost refund. I have used HP for 40 yrs and recommend fully. HP printers communicate with Apple products extremely well. Brother does NOT even though advertised they do. Had to use cable with brother wireless but not wit HP. Printing is seamless with HP.

I bought this three weeks as a replacement for an older model of this printer. The toner cartridges that came with it tapped out within two weeks. I was in a bind and had to order new toner cartridges. OMG! The standard toner replacements were $500 and the larger capacity replacements were $1,000. The printer itself cost less than the larger capacity replacements and the standard replacements were only a couple of hundred dollars less. The cost of the replacement toner is absolutely ridiculous and the reason for the 1 star review. There is absolutely no excuse for the toner prices. They make the Big Pharma companies look honest. The printer is not a bad printer but is not a wise investment due to the replacement toner prices.
