HP LaserJet Pro M521dn Monochrome is rated 3.20 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Should be easier to set up It is difficult to set up many of the features of this printer. To set up the unit on my WiFi network, II should have been able to turn it on, choose a WiFi network, enter the network password and go. Instead, I had to call tech support to figure out how to change the IP address, etc. The same was true for the "scan to folder" feature. The HP Utility doesn't have a "Browse" feature to pick the folder on my computer I wanted to download scans to. Instead, I had to enter the folder name with the entire path. Since the instructions are written for a PC rather than a Mac, there were no help to me. I am pretty tech saavy; so, if I had a hard time making all of the features work, I can imagine how difficult it would be for someone less technically oriented to install it. It was also very difficult to find anything of help on the HP web site since almost all of the help was written for a PC. The product does print great. If it weren't so hard to set up, I would have given it a 5 star rating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No OCR (falsified docs), poor panel features So far, the printer and copier operate well, but there are two extremely disappointing failures for this machine. We run a small nonprofit that corresponds with prisoners and do a fair amount of scanning. We considered separate scanners and printers, but limited space and funding made that less practical. We have used two less expensive MFP machines (both Canon), and both had full-featured interfaces on the machine so you did not have to open separate software to access necessary functions. First, the features in the touchscreen are way too limited. We cannot get to the features that make the touchscreen useful to us, so have to scan from the software, which impacts our efficiency. Both our much less expensive MFPs had full-featured machine interfaces that were far more efficient to use. For a machine that costs this much, it is absolutely unacceptable that the touchscreen features are so so limited. I'm mainly referring to the scan features. Second, both our far less expensive MFPs had OCR capabilities, and that is something we very much need. I had looked at the specs before ordering, and it was vague, but a fact sheet implied this machine had OCR software. In researching this, I saw that the M521 user manual stated "The Readiris OCR program is included on a separate CD that shipped with the product. To use the Readiris program, install it from the appropriate software CD, and then follow the instructions in the online Help." I now see that this language has been deleted from the user manual. It is really unbelievable that an MFP in this price range does not include OCR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT PRINTER BOUGHT THIS PRODUCT 2 MONTHS AGO FOR UNDER 10 PEOPLE IN DEPARTMENT. CURRENTLY WORKS GREAT, SCAN, FAX, PRINT, COPY - FAST, NO ISSUES. WAS LOOKING FOR A SCANNER ONLY, BUT THE SALES PERSON CORRECTLY RECOMMENDED FOR THE SAME PRICE I COULD GET AN ALL-INONE. THIS IS A GOOD IDEA AS A BACK-UP TO MY OTHER EQUIPMENT. INITIALLY THE PAPER FEEDER WAS DEFECTIVE BUT HP FED-EX'D A REPLACEMENT PART AND A TECH SHOWED UP THE NEXT DAY OF REPORTING THE PROBLEM TO REPLACE. THE SET-UP WAS VERY DIFFICULT DUE TO HP'S TECHS NOT REALLY BEING PROPERLY TRAINED ON A NETWORK SET-UP. I HAD TO HAVE MY IT CO. STEP IN AND FINALIZE THE SET-UP. AFTER 2 MONTHS OF HEAVY USE, IT IS A TYPICAL HP PRODUCT - WORKS GREAT WITH LITTLE TO NO ISSUES. I HAVE 4 OTHER HP PRINTERS OF VARIOUS AGES (OLDEST BEING 12 YRS OLD) AND ALL STILL WORK GREAT

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awful! Beware this machine is LOUD! It sounds like propellers starting up. My office is approximately 16x20 and this machine is too loud for my space. They scanning feature is incredibly slow. It seems the machine needs time to calibrate each time you perform an action. It does not get better or faster. The scans themselves are of good quality and that is the only thing that I find positive about this laserjet. Do everyone in your office a favor and find something else to fit your needs. This machine is not up to par with the usual HP quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well expect for Scanning We have our File Server on a Different Subnet then our copier, and scanning takes 10-13 seconds per page to scan! However, if your network scan folder location is on the same subnet as the Copier it worked great. HP support had no idea what the problem was, and left me scratching my head. HP's smaller unit M426 and our other scanners work perfectly fine scanning across subnet. Maybe was a Lime won't take a chance on any of there copiers now!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly inefficient and frustrating machine I have been working in various law firms for over 8 years now and this is BY FAR the most inefficient printer/scanner I have ever seen! The button responses are really slow, the address book is really slow and it needs to initialize and/or calibrate almost every time you use it. Which means you have to stand there and twiddle your thumbs while you wait for the machine to prepare itself for a simple scan. I can literally walk to a different machine all the way down the hall and scan a doc in faster than I can when this machine decides to calibrate itself first. It does produce decent quality scans and print jobs, but be prepared to wait a LOT longer than you're used to for them each and every time. For the amount of money this machine costs combined with how incredibly frustrating it is to use, I would definitely NOT recommend it to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mostly pros Everything about this printer is great. The only con that I would say is it is a little louder than I was expecting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Satisfied so far. Some initial condition problems were fixed w/ help of customer service. Website listed wrong wireless card -- resulting in delay and extra $80. Not sure customer service had adequate info on this product, resulting in long phone times.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product but slow at scanning I downsized to this printer as a cost effective replacement for my older HP model. It takes a full ream of paper which is good since I go through a couple of reams a week, at minimum. However, for an office that scans to email many times a day and which sends out multiple faxes, there probably are options that scan faster and have easier to use fax options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Runs well but loud. Good features and easy to use, but loud when running in small office space. Wish there was a way it would keep track of copies or printed pages for specific clients/users.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Overall good, but a major flaw As a printer/scanner/copier, this thing is awesome. Nice clean copies, very quiet scans, and it's not loud at all with printing or copying. When it first arrived, we had a small issue with the document feeder, but HP was quick to send out a technician and the issue has been fixed. Our 1 major complaint about this machine, which is why I can only give it a Fair and Average rating, is that this machine CANNOT fax from PC. Though it is advertised as having the ability, we have found out through Tech Support that that ability only exists on Windows 7. The software has not been updated to support Windows 10. So, the few faxes we do send out, we have to print the document and fax the old fashion way, which is a step backward from our Xerox that we placed with this machine. Overall, we like this machine and have no problems with it besides the ability to fax directly from our computers. It's 2018, and this is technology from years ago that we're missing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good all in one We needed to replace an old physical fax machine, so we combined the fax and printer into one device saving on power, space, and power. The users like having a simple copier in their area. The only downside is the height. I have cabinets above the unit so it is tight to put a flat piece of paper on the scanner. HP makes great printers, and so far this on is a really good unit

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good lower cost MFP We needed a printer that could fax, copy and scan to email, print at a fairly high speed with a fairly high monthly usage at a fairly low price. We added the paper tray and it is taking the place of a Sharp copier at a much lower price. The initial toner cartridge is quite small, so make sure to purchase a replacement with it or you will run out of toner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not a bad MFP - but there are better We are testing several MFP type printers to put in our assistants offices. This model is a good size, not too large, but not so tiny you can't print a ton of documents to it before it gives up the ghost...aka - the duty cycle. It would probably be the one we chose had the ADF scanning not been limited to 300 dpi. We have a nameless few that want 400 or higher and there just isn't a setting for that when scanning through the ADF. Speaking of scanning, it's a bit slow in the ADF to pull docs through, process and get them to the destination. Not half as bad as the M527 which was just a full on pig...like scan, go get some coffee, come back and ohh wait...there it is, finally!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What I expected from mid priced HP This product was purchased to replace an aging fax machine and a HP 4100 Laser Jet printer. Bonus for me with a built in scanner. It works just like my other HP printer, same noise level. Only a couple things bother me. When printing picture heavy pdf files, it will print page 1, wait ten seconds then page 2 spits out, wait ten seconds, etc... Not fun when you are printing 25 pages like that. Could use more internal memory. Second thing I do not like is the touch screen. All in all easy to use, except when manually typing in fax numbers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good printer if you can keep it working It was hard to get hooked to my network, it would print then it wouldn't. It kept telling me to load paper then would only print a few pages at a time. I had trouble installing driver from CD and it was not one I could pick from windows. Finally it started working I had to change ports. However it still freezes up and you have to shut it off to get the print screen to work. I haven't had a chance yet to contact support. If I can keep it working it is a good little printer, and cost per page printing is much less then the others I researched and we go through about 25 cases a year in printing. I have had good luck with most of my Hp printers, the more expensive ones which you get a lower print cost however seem to have more issues then the inexpensive ones, so if you have to have someone come out and work on it not sure the cost savings is there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scan Feature Isn't Good Purchased this printer for a small office. While the print, although resolution isn't great, and copy features work well the scan feature does not. For the first year the HP Easy Scan App worked great. Then it just stopped. Our Tech support company updated the App, the printer software, and the drivers with no success. You can scan 1 page at a time using the flat bed, not the document feeder. If you want to scan more than one sheet you need to do it one page at a time. Very inconvenient! HP needs to update the Easy Scan App so it will function smoothly. Their answer is a new App, HP Smart which requires you to log in every time you want to scan and has multiple steps before you can scan. Not easy.
