Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 Docking Station is rated 4.00 out of 5 by 166.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock Gen 2 The docking station CANNOT power a ThinkPad P15 Gen 2. I was able to pull directly from the power splitter into my laptop, but when using the docking station it kept saying that the dock was not supplying enough power. I attempted all suggestions by the troubleshooting tool (reseating power cords, and updating BIOS. I also worked with the tech support team and downloaded the Dock driver (no mention of that on any of the documentation I received), and they also tried to adjust settings in Thunderbolt Control Center. Nothing worked... For the price it's getting returned. I would rather buy an additional 170W power supply and cheaper dock since this one can't power the laptop anyway...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Dock for all your needs! Great docking station that handles all of my devices and then some! I currently have two monitors, keyboard, mouse, cell phone charger, external hard drive, headphones all connected with a few ports to spare. Works great with no issues to report so far. Using for about a month now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Promising. But it doesn’t work. I really wanted this to work. It’s as close as you can get to a one-cable solution for power hungry Thinkpad Workstations with an included 230w power supply. But the one they sent me doesn’t. In 230w configuration, it will power the laptop. But none of the dock functions work. I’m fact even when not plugged into the laptop, it doesn’t even light up. In the split configuration for lower wattage, it will light up, and sort of works. But it won’t power the laptop. I’ve tried going through tech support because I really need a solution like this. But so far, no help. I am returning it. It’s a $400+ dock, that’s functioning no better than a $100 dock.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much better than 135w version Fixes issue with shutting down, like the 135w dock had. Still glitches at least once a day where the external monitors will disconnect, but it's for about a second or 2 and then they are fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smaller is Mightier I was going to give it 5 stars however I have had one issue, so I couldn't. Overall, I have only had this for a short time, but I was able to set it up pretty easliy except I did have to have my IT consultants set it up on my 2 monitors. I love the smaller size of this as I just came from using a larger Dell Docking for a larger Dell laptop. I like having the USB and headphones on the front for additional access. I also have a monitor arm for my wo monitors from Human Scale that has a plate for USB and speaker jack. My one issue was actually using this with my jawbone speaker, I recieved all sorts of feedback and static on the speaker when it was plugged into this and I never had that before.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly Disappointed with a Very Expensive Dock Considering the expense for one of these, we have considerable connection issues. It doesn't work very well with the X1 Extreme that is supposed to work well with it. We had to return for a replacement when the first one wouldn't power up anymore and the replacement still had the same USB connection issues with peripherals. Very disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful BRICK Lots of Power- This is a power supply / dock that is useful to connect a high power laptop to a dual monitor setup. Ask Lenovo sales if it is compatible with your hardware. It's expensive and worth every penny. Ensure it is compatible with your hardware.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dock will not come out of sleep mode Does not work well with P1 V2. If the laptop goes to sleep, the dock will not bring the desktop back up with out shutting down, unplugging and reconnecting. This is super annoying. Otherwise it works fine. The price is very high and the mobile workstations only work with this dock. These docks make me want to move away from the Lenovo workstation platform completely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good dock for Lenovo USB-C laptops. Works great with P53, wish Lenovo would include better instructions for the power connections. 230w power supply needs to use the splitter to power the dock. Not obvious since the instructions show the dock powered directly by the 230w power supply.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More Headache than Worth Definitely not functioning as expected. I needed to purchase separate cables and to this day keep getting an error message that I need to use the power supply that was sent with the dock because the one being used does not have enough power, however it is the one that was sent. It requires many restarts to finally work. Working with Support but sounds like this is a bigger issue

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock Gen 2 This dock has plenty of connection options and has worked well with my ThinkPad. The only issue I've come across is that USB-C cable that connects to my laptop is sometimes difficult to insert.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Desktop/laptop conversion. I've only been using for a month, but so far everything is working as I wanted. What I wanted; to create an easy access workstation for my laptop. I have a monitor, keyboard and mouse that simulates a desktop set up. Lap top is easily plugged in with one plug for the desktop experience, and just as simple to unplug and transport when needed. Original laptop charger now lives in my laptop bag for when I'm on the go..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Screens Cut in and out When it works it is fabulous, however my screens are constantly shutting off and sometimes coming back on. Other times I need to pull the HDMI and power cord out of the back of my P53 laptop and plug back in to make my screens active again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very disappointed in this Expensive dock Nice design poor execution of a very expensive piece of hardware. Very disappointed in this dock. I should never haver bought it, and just dealt with my tangle of cords instead. The monitor attached to the dock continuously blanks out and resets all pages to my TPX1Gen2 monitor. Very annoying and should send it back. When it does work it is fine, but after each shut down of monitor, i have to reboot or put my laptop into sleep mode and wake it back up. All drivers are up-to-date. For the price you pay for this dock it should be perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unpredictable with 3 monitors I selected this dock and paid the additional cost because I knew I needed to operate 3 monitors. Typically it works OK, but from time to time (maybe once every other day) it stops supporting one or two of the monitors and I need to shut everything down and reboot. Then it is OK for a while again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice features but not as reliable as I had expected. Functionally the Dock is very good. It works well with external monitors - I use it with two additional ASUS 2K monitors and the image quality is perfect from the dock on both HDMI and Display Port connections. I also have my phone connected through the pass-through USB-C (Thunderbolt) port. I can even use an Apple Thunderbolt 3-to-2 adapter and from there, a Thunderbolt 2 - to - IEEE1394 and have a Roland FA-66 Audio interface working perfectly for audio and MIDI. So everything works well to standard. However, two things bring off two stars for me: 1) This dock failed within 3.5 months of use. I did not power anything from it other than the computer, and indeed the power supply did still work and power the laptop. But all the PORTS DIED! CDW were champions and sent me a replacement under warranty. But I would have expected far better reliability from a Lenovo (ie. ex-IBM) product. 2) It does not have easy power supply connections. To power a workstation laptop you need to use a stupid Y-split cable for 130W and 65W connections. That's just bad design and bad engineering. Also, the equivalent DELL dock I have used in the past had more USB 3 and USB C ports which I need. On this dock I still have to connect a USB 2.0 powered hub for all my basic peripherals.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely works with C940 (81TE) 15" This is not the only dock that Lenovo says works with the C940 (81TE 15", but it is the ONLY one they sell that will charge and transfer data with the C940. I would have given 5 stars but the split cable is a bit short, see below. I did a lot of research (see my review of the 40AN0135US). My only negatives with this is: (1) It is pricey (you can find it elsewhere for much less) and (2) the split cable is a bit short (26.38 inches) due to the location of the ports on both units, right side of the doc and left side of the laptop. There is another cable that is 1.5M (Part number: 4X90U90621) which I will get with the rewards from buying the computer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works for my home office Directions for hook-up were a bit confusing - 2 different item instructions were sent. The Ethernet connection is sometimes iffy, as is the HDMI. Takes a few minutes for everything to connect in upon fresh start-up. A lot hooked up to this: ThinkPad X1 Extreme gen 1, HDMI for monitor, ethernet, microphone, camera, speakers, keyboard, mouse - so dock tends to run warm. However much easier to just unhook the power cable (instead all of the above) when I need to use the computer other than in my home office.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does not connect reliably This workstation does not connect my laptop reliably to my monitor or webcam. I have tried a new monitor and changing the cable, but it only sometimes detects the other display and the image often flickers. Considering the price, I expected it to connect my laptop to my devices with ease.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best Best dock for the X1 Carbon Extreme. More than enough connections and the right ones. Well designed for the think Pads, Red bottom is a great touch. Surprised that it is able to charge a 135 watt notebook. Very nice equipment, happy to have it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not really a Dock The dual lightning display/power cord does not make a good connection with the lightning port on my X1 extreme, so if I move the PC at all, the external display loses signal. its a kludgy solution for such an expensive dock.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't purchase This docking station is a waste of money. It does not sync well with the new think pad I purchased. Plug the HDMI cable into docking station from monitor and if I do not have the monitor on before I turn on the computer, the monitor is not recognized and does not display. Have to do a full shutdown and startup, while the monitor is on prior to starting computer. And it will not display if I start the computer by pushing the docking station power, it has to be the computer power button. You would think with today's technology they could get this right. Buy another product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy and Clean East set-up. One cable does it all. I can run a two monitors plus the mobile workstation monitor with zero issues. We have all of our P70 series workstations paired with these. Makes for a very clean looking desk space, plus it saves wear and tear on all of the ports on your machine as you don't have to connect multiple cables non stop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised, but could use some tweaks? Ultimately, this does what I need and what was advertised. 4 stars due to a couple of items: 1 Ideally, it would support 3 monitors +native screen if I wanted to do that. For my 3 monitor setup, I have to use both the dock plugs on the back, and the HDMI port on the side, which makes it more challenging to position when docked. 2) I send sound to speakers through the dock so that I don't have to plug/unplug sound every time I dock. For whatever reason, this is on the front instead of the back of the dock, again making it more difficult to position the dock at my desk 3) I occasionally have issues with all three monitors not wanting to come back after re-docking or waking from sleep. This requires a power-cycle of the dock, unplug/replug of monitors, and/or restart of the laptop - all of which waste my time. I've updated the dock firmware (which you have to do manually - it doesn't auto-update), and this helps, but ideally, it would not be something I ever have to manage. All told, the dock is a pretty slick package and lets me quickly and easily take my workstation on the go, then work with it back at the office like a traditional workstation. It's my first go at a fully mobile workstation, the dock is a necessary piece, and has mostly satisfied me thus far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Could Not Get It to Push to Monitor Consistently Docking station could not handle connecting my computer to an external display consistently. It would display my screen and then flicker about every 10-15 minutes where my monitor would have to reconnect to my computer. The computer I was using was a Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 3 and I even tried installing and updating firmware, drivers and BIOS to get this thing to work consistently. Ultimately, it did not so I returned it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding and very capable docking station Very solidly built and overall high quality product. Installation was a breeze and everything worked perfectly. The numerous ports on the backside allowed for multiple peripherals to be connected for increased functionality. The docking station connection to my Lenovo ThinkPad Gen 3 laptop keeps the battery fully charged, which then allowed me to use the laptop's power cord for when I travel. Connecting/disconnecting the laptop from the docking station is a breeze. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase this product; in fact, I liked it so much, I purchased a second one for my father.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works OK, but not Perfectly The device is good for the most part. I am using it with a ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 3. My complaint is that I have to often unplug the machine and redock as my monitors will not get signal and then not turn back on unless I redock. This happens multiple times daily. For how pricey this was I would have expected better performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read Your Setup Literature... both of them! There are many things about this docking station I like. I purchased this dock at the same time as I purchased the new laptop. The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars, is that it was fairly painful to setup. Yes, I admit I did not follow the instructions during setup because it seemed fairly straight-forward. There were numerous driver updates and still we encountered problems. When I did run into problems (problems that my IT person was struggling with as well), we did resort to the diagram included in the literature. The problem was that there were two conflicting diagrams! It all worked out, but this is my first docking station that required two different power plug-ins!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great for my laptops This dock is the perfect solution for my desk setup. It can connect to my work laptop (ThinkPad X1 Carbon) via only the thunderbolt, and it also works with my personal ThinkPad P52, which uses the full dual thunderbolt/slim-tip cable due to its power needs. HDMI, DisplayPort, USB, and Ethernet all work perfectly with Linux (tested Debian and Arch). The manual doesn't explain the input power splitter well, but my impression is that the lower power input drives the dock and the thunderbolt power, while the upper input power drives only the slim-tip power port. Kind of an odd choice to need to divide the input power like it does, but it seems like a design artifact of the previous gen, where two separate PSUs were used. Highly recommend for a desk setup that includes a ThinkPad workstation laptop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not Completely Reliable I have purchased several of these new Gen2 USB-C docks and I really like the features, but the reliability just isn't there. A couple of them have had issues with the Ethernet connection to the network (not related to IP pass-through), and another with the monitors coming back on after going to sleep. I have updated both the drivers and the firmware of the docks but this doesn't seem to help. I wish these were more reliable because I do prefer them over the old style mechanical docks, but am hesitant to purchase again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unusual Docking Station Not the usual docking station that I am used to. But on the other hand, being tethered by a cable rather than having the laptop firmly attached is refreshing and freeing. Plenty of ports for USB and monitors. No problem with speed on USB or LAN. Compact, doesn't take up a lot of desk space. Would be nice if side mount holes were present so I could mount on side/back of desk and free up more desk space. Plenty of power with the 230w supply. Overall very satisfied.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best dock! I was using a ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2, but having several small issues that were frustrating, not to mention it was not properly charging my laptops (ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2). However, it was the recommended dock by a Lenovo Rep. After working with Lenovo Support, I discovered the power was no adequate and they allowed me to return the regular Gen 2 dock and purchase this Workstation Dock. ALL the bizarre little issues disappeared. This dock has been great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HORRIBLE, Glitchy Product I purchased 2 separate docks for my new ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2, and both of them are low-quality, glitchy products...not at all the quality Lenovo or IBM products I used to use in Silicon Valley. Both of the docks refuse to wake up once the laptop goes to sleep. The laptop LED shows it's on, as does the red light on the docks, but the laptop screen remains black and the 2x HDMI monitors connected to the dock(s just sit there in sleep mode, refusing to wake up. The only way to make it work the way it is supposed to is to turn off the laptop, unplug the power from the dock, and then plug everything back in and turn them on. Extremely disappointing and tedious. Our business will not be purchasing more Lenovo products after this experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works, but with one exception. Does almost exactly what I need it to, but for some reason, it wont charge my workstation laptop. The charger that came with the laptop works just fine, but this dock wont charge it at all. Not a big deal, but when I leave the office and/or go to travel, I have to get under the desk to disconnect the charger that works and take it with me, then put it all back when I am in the office. Other than that gripe, I does everything else it's supposed to.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Poor Design - A Step Backwards Takes up much more space on my desktop than the old "Under the laptop" design, which had the added benefit of ergonomically inclining the keyboard. Short, stiff wires connecting the unit to the laptop and the power splitter exacerbate the placement issues. Seems to have been designed with little or no consideration for use cases.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It Works well I need two screen for my work but sometime I could use just my laptop. So I like how this dock doesn't route my audio to my second screen and the option of disconnecting the data cable and not the power. That way I don't lose charge and I don't have to find the other power cable that came with the laptop. So I could just leave it in a backpack when I need to go mobile. I also love how I can turn off everything by the button on the dock don't use it much, but its cool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Too Idiosyncratic I've had many Lenovo docks before and this is the first I'm not 100% happy with. Pressing the power button and having to wait minutes for the laptop to actually power on is not good. I simply cannot understand the delay. Plus, if the laptop goes into sleep mode, it may require a hard power down to actually get it to wake up again. If I didn't need multiple laptops and monitors, I probably wouldn't use it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mostly works well, with one annoying problem While most things work well on the dock, even straight out of the box with linux (except for disabling securing in BIOS) - I am having a real problem with the sound port - the sound is occasionally distorted to the point that it is no longer usable. It does seem to reset itself, but still, I expect perfection out of a premium product. Also, I am having a problem with an older DVI monitor, but I don't know if that is the dock, or the dongle that I needed to convert to DP.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not User Friendly but works ok Works 'ok'. However I hate thunderbolts in general. Why do they require a stand-alone box that takes up additional desk space AND requires you to have to plug/unplug cables every single time. I take my laptop with me everywhere. Meaning if I didn't travel with it then I would have just gotten a desktop. Plugging in wires every single time is terrible!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Overall good, but has a few minor hiccups Overall, the dock does what it is supposed to do and has plenty of ports. The one downside my colleagues and I have noticed is that the monitors temporarily lose signal sometimes. I have a two monitor setup plus I keep my laptop open for a total of three screens. One of the full sized monitors will occasionally "blink". It will lose signal for a few seconds and then turn back on like nothing ever happened. This happens with both monitors and rarely at the same time. It seems to happen randomly. I have updated the dock to the latest firmware in an attempt to remedy. The dock update fixed a longer signal loss issue I was having but the "blink" remains. I hope this will eventually be fixed with a future firmware update.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from sort of awful; expensive for what it is has begun flickering and not recognizing keyboard and mouse; doesn't have a lot of extra USB ports, so i have added a second dongle as a mini-docking station to add additional peripherals; the only reason i got it was to have the button to startup the laptop so i wouldn't have to take the laptop out of its stand every morning; bought it on eBay because Lenovo was out of stock; how can you be out of stock for a key product that supports your flagship laptop?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The dock takes full advantage of Thunderbolt 3 Thunderbolt 3 in X1 Gen 3 Thinkpad requires this dock for full capabilities to be utilized. My X1 is plenty powerful to work as a Desktop Substitute and with this Gen 2 dock a single connection makes my portable my desktop workstation. Providing full X1 charging capacity and 65 Watts for accessories, full 40 GB Thunderbolt USB type C connections, through support for three 4K monitors, including expansive connections from GB network, Type C and B USB ports to audio port for speakers this port makes the grade for easy connection to my home workstation. Only 4 Stars because it is an expensive dock. When one considers the bigger power supply included and the full Thunderbolt 3 capability it provides the price is okay - for work circumstances it's price is fine. My usage is personal so the price is a necessity to take advantage of my powerful notebook, if a bit painful. The options aren't there to do otherwise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for my P1 Gen 3 Mobile Workstation! I was using the Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 (not workstation and having issues with using 3 external monitors and my computer slow charging, but now I have no issues and my computer/monitors are running great! For context, I have a ThinkPad P1 Gen 3 Intel (15") - Mobile Workstation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great, but has some weird design choices... Loaded with ports and not too big, but does have some quirks. The biggest issue I have is that they knew they'd need to build a new power adapter to support the higher wattages, so why not take the time and go ahead an incorporate the Thunderbolt 3 pins into the power connector so that we wouldn't have to connect two cables? Another quirk is that you have to connect a splitter to the power that goes into the dock....seems like they could have done this internally.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Docking Station Still need more PORTS - and like the old style docking station where the computer just click's in and sits on top of the docking station
