Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thoroughly ImpressedI've owned quite a few different lenses, and I'm very critical about sharpness and overall image quality. I was struggling for more than a year as to whether or not to get the 2.8 without IS or this lens. In the past few weeks, I've shot a lot with this f/4 and I'm very happy, even with my indoor shots without a flash. When I compare the IQ against the 2.8 that I borrowed from a friend, I don't see a difference, even when I zoom to 200% plus. Get it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small, light, great ISI just bought this lens after returning one that was a long-term loan from a friend. I have owned and used the EF 24-105mm f/4 IS for the last four years, paired with 6D and 5D mark III full-frame cameras and generally was not a big fan of the 24-105. It wasn't bad, but as someone who usually shoots with prime lenses, I just found it not up to the standard set by my Canon primes (35mm f/1.4 L mark II, 50mm f/1.2 L and 100mm f/2.8 IS L Macro. The 24-105 was also heavier and larger, and for me served mainly to cover 24mm and for non-photography oriented travel. The 24-70mm f/4 is noticeably smaller and lighter, its macro mode is useful, if not equal to a true macro lens, but most important to me is that at 24mm there is very little distortion. It is so good at 24mm that when taking a full kit, I engage the zoom lock and just think of it as a 24mm prime, and one that is smaller and lighter than the 24mm f/1.4 L mark II and not much larger than the 24mm f/2.8 IS , which are the two lenses I was considering to complete my Canon outfit. As a 24mm wide-angle "with benefits", this lens is a great compromise. An f/1.4 lens would give me better low-light performance and of course better control over depth of field, which are why the 24mm f/1.4 is still on my wish list, but this is an excellent alternative to the 24mm f/2.8 IS. Unlike a 24mm prime, however, I can easily attach this lens to my camera and be reasonably sure that I can cover just about anything. For serious photography I still prefer primes and likely always will. My 35mm f/1.4 Mk II is, by far, my favorite lens. What this lens does, however, is lets me take a DSLR with a single lens to a family event and not even think about carrying a camera bag with me when I go out for the day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens, IS Is A Game-changerI bought this lens 2 months ago and have used it for a couple of weddings and for general use. Image stabilization is a game-changer, especially at the hardest part of a wedding during the bridesmaid processional. I have a 24-70 f2.8L, which is a wonderful lens but it isn't stabilized and it's heavy. In a low light church, with the girls walking up the aisle I only get one chance. With a flash the old lens got acceptable sharpness with my 6D, if I was careful to not shake while taking the shot. With the new f4 with image stabilization I get excellent sharpness repeatedly. This lens solved my biggest problem.I have heard some people snobishly say they would NEVER buy anything less than an f2.8 lens, but I would never shoot those bridesmaids at 2.8. I shoot at 5.6 or 6.3 because I need the wider depth of field for the moving subject. My 6d gives fine images at high ISO.The photo quality of this lens is really good with no more distortion than the classic 24-70 f2.8, it produces a nice punchy image, it's solidly built, it's light and it's half the price of the other lenses.Don't underestimate what IS can do to improve your sharpness. I love this lens and only pull out the f2.8 occasionally now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatility & Superb Quality combinedI wanted to buy a lens which I can leave on the camera most of the time and capture great images with. The standard zoom lens was missing in my collection as I shoot mostly with primes and a telephoto L zoom lens so I decided to do some research. After deciding that the 2.8ii would be too expensive and the 24-105 being too outdated I then proceeded to look at the 24-70 F4 IS. The new F4 IS seems to fit my needs perfectly - a small but high quality zoom that's built to a high standard along with a useful macro mode. After buying the lens and taking some photos with it in the field I can safely say that this lens delivers in terms of overall color, contrast, sharpness, etc. It is a bit softer wide open at 50mm but it's not a deal breaker and is still highly usable. Recommended without reservations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 24-70mm f/4 lensThis lens is everything I hoped it would be. I shoot landscapes, events, and portraits and this lens will work for all of those uses. Plus, the macro addition is so handy. I would buy this again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite LensI have five lens for my 6D, but often a photo outing demands choosing one lens. Generally it is this lens for me. I find the sharpness outstanding, and f/4 is adequate for my needs. Of course the macro function is disadvantaged by the limited working distance, but I have been able to work with it very well. The macro image quality is superb, and since I often brace for focal plane stability with an extended finger, the short distance can even be an advantage. As I review my macro images, I have more favorites by my 24-70 than my 100, because I am usually with my 24-70!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from scientific useI work in an agricultural R&D company where we take pictures of insects, plants, fungi and assorted items such as illustrating procedures. We have the 60 2.8 and 100 2.8 canon macro lenses, but the 24-70 seems to be the go to lens for all the departments. We started using the T5i aand upraded to the T61. Either body with the 24-70 seems to handle most anything we shoot. It is the preferred lens for field work where a versatile, light weight lens is preferable. We are currently doing a tiome lapse experiment where the 24-70 will be the main lens used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lensVery sharp and fast auto focus. With the high ISO's of the cameras today I don't really miss the one stop of the 2.8.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent LensI bought this lens recently with a Canon 6D, and am very happy with the purchase. f4 is not such a wide aperture, but the image quality is as good as any lens I have worked with. For most of my work (landscape, architecture and the odd indoor shoot) this lens serves the purpose very weel.
